Where exact hydrologic parameters were not measured directly in individual studies, they were estimated from inferred statements and knowledge of hydrologic variables leading to certain instream conditions.  From this information it was possible to determine which components of the stream community would be most seriously affected by reduced discharges.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In addition, a number of different methods used in the recommendation of minimum streamflows was reviewed.  These methods were evaluated for their reliability and ease of use.  It was concluded that a method for recommending minimum discharges should not sacrifice reliability for expediency.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>A methodology is proposed for the recommendation of minimum discharges for a warm water fishery.  This method utilizes field measurements of critical stream areas and biological criteria determined from the used of indicator species.  For large rivers, migration and spawning requirements are analyzed using the paddlefish (<i>Polyodon spathula</i>) as the indicator species.  For smaller rivers, the suggested indicator species is the sauger (<i>Stizostedion canadense</i>).  Rearing flows are determined on the basis of stream productivity by analyzing macroinvertebrate habits, and on the basis of fish habitat typing.  The indicator species for determining adequate fish habitat is the stonecat (<i>Notorus flavus</i>).</p>\n<br/>\n<p>A number of variables were identified which might require a greater amount of in-stream flow than the fishery, per se.  These variables included streamflow needs for riparian and other sub-irrigated vegetation, water quality parameters, anchor ice formation, and the relationship between discharge and sediment yield.  Information concerning these variables is insufficient at this time to determine whether a variable will \"over-ride\" the streamflow requirement for the fishery itself. The basin is along the eastern edge of the \"Palouse Country\" where the rolling Palouse hills merge with the low mountains of northern Idaho. It is drained by the South Fork Palouse River, Paradise Creek, and Missouri Flat Creek, and their headwater tributaries.</p><p>All water supplies for the basin are derived from wells and springs. Virtually all large-capacity wells are owned by the City of Moscow and the University of Idaho. These wells are open to the basalt of the Columbia River Group and the interbedded sands in the Latah Formation (Stevens, 1960, p. 335; Jones and Ross, 1972, p. 12-13, fig. 4). Many domestic and a few commercial wells are also open to these same formations. Most of the City and University wells tap thick sections of these water-bearing formations. However, only about 25 percent of the total basin area is underlain by basalt. The approximate subsurface extent of the area underlain by basalt, as determined by well logs and geophysical data, is shown in figure 2.</p><p>The purpose of this report is to present basic geologic and hydrologic data that are available in the basin. Included are a table of well records, well logs, a table of annual ground-water withdrawals, water levels in observation wells, a contour map showing the approximate elevation of the water-level in the upper series of basalt flows and interbedded sediments in the southern part of the area (fig. 2), and a bibliography of the more important reports pertaining to ground water in the area. More than 90 percent of the wells tapping basalt were visited, but only a representative number of wells tapping other rocks were visited. The basins included all, or parts of, the Norwell, Pembroke, Plymouth, Plympton, Rockland, Scituate, Weymouth, and Whitman. Weymouth and Cohasset are in Norfolk County; the other towns are in Plymouth County.</p>\n<p>This report presents, in tabular form, selected records of wells, test wells, borings, and springs; measurements of stream discharge, specific conductance, and temperature at partial-record stations; chemical analyses of ground water and surface water; and a summary of municipal water sources and additional sources available. The data were collected during a study of the drainage basins from 1969 to 1971 in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. When related to streamflow, these data provide hydrologists with a knowledge of the flood experience of a drainage basin. If an adequate flood history is known, it is possible to estimate the probable magnitude and frequency of floods likely to occur in that basin, and this information is a valuable asset to anyone who must estimate design floods at proposed drainage structures. However, most design problems involve estimating peak flows on ungaged streams. This is difficult because the rate of storm runoff is not the same in all basins due to the influence of various basin characteristics which can either assist or retard the runoff. The crest-stage gaging program in Oregon is designed to provide a representative sampliing of peak flows at basins having a wide range in characteristics. Then, after sufficient data are collected, a statistical analysis can be made which will provide a means for estimating design floods at ungaged sites on the basis of known basin characteristics.</p><p>This report is one of a series presenting a compilation of peak data collected at 232 crest-stage gaging stations in Oregon. The collection and publication of these data are made possible through mutual funding by State and Federal agencies. The Geological Survey, the Oregon State Highway Commission, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Bureau of Land Management are currently supporting 160 active crest-stage stations in ,{"id":29196,"text":"wri7431 - 1974 - Oak Glen water-resources development study using modeling techniques, San Bernardino County, California","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2018-10-30T12:46:15","indexId":"wri7431","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1974","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":342,"text":"Water-Resources Investigations Report","code":"WRI","active":false,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"74-31","title":"Oak Glen water-resources development study using modeling techniques, San Bernardino County, California","docAbstract":"<p>Hydrologic, digital-model, and economic analyses were made to determine the most efficient balance of conjunctive use of local ground water and surface water--specifically, whether additional ground-water supplies can be developed in the Oak Glen study area, San Bernardino County, Calif., for local use and also for export to the adjacent Yucaipa area, and what will be the effects of imported water available in 1980.</p><p>The hydrologic analysis showed that transmissivity values of the aquifer in the Oak Glen study area ranged from 1,000 to 6,750 gallons per day per foot or their equivalent 134 to 902 feet squared per day (12 to 84 metres squared per day) and that net annual recharge in the area was about 1,940 acre-feet (2.39 cubic hectometres) per year. The volume of ground water in storage in 1970 was about 86,000 acre-feet (106 cubic hectometres).</p><p>The digital-model analysis included building and verifying a steady-state and a non-steady-state model. The steady-state model was considered to be verified when the model-generated water levels approximated the measured 1949 water levels, which were assumed to represent steady-state water-level conditions. The non-steady-state model was verified for 1949-70, and the model satisfactorily reproduced the measured water-level changes for the study area during that period. Water-level changes in the ground-water basin were predicted from 1971 to 1980 using as representative average annual pumpage that from 1966 to 1970 and 1971. The model also predicted water-level changes from 1971 to 1980 using the maximum pumpage capacities of the wells under recharge conditions for average, wet, and dry periods.</p><p>The predicted water-level changes in the Oak Glen study area were used to calculate the average costs of pumping water for 1980. The comparable average costs of importing water from an alternative supply and the capital costs of well construction were also determined. Monitoring studies have indicated that tritium and chloride have dispersed over a 15-square mile (39-square kilometer) area of the aquifer in low but detectable concentrations and have only migrated as far as 5 miles (8 kilometers) downgradient from discharge points. The movement of cationic waste solutes, particularly <sup>90</sup>Sr and <sup>137</sup>Cs, has been significantly retarded due to sorption phenomena, principally ion exchange. <sup>137</sup>Cs has shown no detectable migration in the aquifer and <sup>90</sup>Sr has migrated only about 1.5 miles (2 kilometers) from the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP) discharge well, and is detectable over an area of only 1.5 square miles ( 4 square kilometers) of the aquifer. Digital modeling techniques have been applied successfully to the analysis of the complex waste-transport system by utilizing numerical solution of the coupled equations of groundwater motion and mass transport. The model includes the effects of convective transport, flow divergence, two-dimensional hydraulic dispersion, radioactive decay, and reversible linear sorption. The hydraulic phase of the model uses the iterative, alternating direction, implicit finite-difference scheme to solve the groundwater flow equations, while the waste-transport phase uses a modified method of characteristics to solve the solute transport equations simulated by the model. The modeling results indicate that hydraulic dispersion (especially transverse) is a much more significant influence than previously suggested by earlier studies. The model has been used to estimate future waste migration patterns for varied assumed hydrological and waste conditions up through the year 2000. The hydraulic effects of recharge from the Big Lost River have an important (but not predominant) influence on the simulated future migration patterns. For the assumed conditions, the model indicates that detectable concentrations of waste chloride and tritium could move as much as 15 miles (24 kilometers) downgradient from the original discharge points by the year 2000. However, the model shows <sup>90</sup>Sr moving only 2 to 3 miles (3 to 5 kilometers) downgradient in the same time.
