What areas are prone to periodic flooding? What is the water supply? What is the chemical quality of the ground water and water in the streams? How deep is the water table? Which streams are gaged, and where? These and similar questions are being asked regularly by land and resource developers, urban planners, industrial consultants, and governmental resource managers. This map provides the first step toward answering these questions. It shows by symbols and color the hydrologic data published as of January 1974 for the Greater Denver area by the U.S. Environmental Data Service and by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating agencies, and the points or areas where these data have been collected. Physical, chemical, and biological </span><span>parameters were determined in surface water, bottom sediment, and </span><span>bulk precipitation (rainfall and dry fallout).</span></p><p><span>The geology of the area, bottom sediment, bulk precipitation, natural, urban, and agricultural runoff, and the characteristics of the hydrologic system in the Everglades influence the type and concentration of each chemical constituent and how it affects the water quality. </span></p><p><span>The quality of surface water in the agricultural area between Lake Okeechobee and the water conservation areas is markedly different from that of other surface water in southeastern Florida. In general, the water in this area is higher in concentrations of most chemical constituents. Man has engaged in cultural activities, both agricultural and urban, which have affected the water quality in the northern and eastern segments of the area of investigation. </span></p><p><span>The quality of the water improves, however, as it flows to the south and east because there is minimal input from man's activities and many of the constituents are assimilated by plants, sorbed on organic material and clay in the bottom sediments, and entrapped within the sediments. Dilution by rainfall and concentration by evapotranspiration are also important factors that influence the quality of surface water in the area of investigation. </span></p><p><span>The area of investigation in the Everglades is a sink for macronutrients, trace metals, and chlorinated-hydrocarbon insecticides. These constituents do not move through the system freely. They become tied up in various complexes and for that reason, the water being delivered to Everglades National Park is of better quality than the water entering the northern edge of the water conservation areas. The various physical and biological processes and chemical reactions combine to improve the water quality as the water flows southward. </span></p><p><span>The data presented in this report may be used as a baseline for determination of future changes in water quality at the several places in the Everglades where recurrent sampling of rainfall, surface water, and bottom sediments was undertaken during the course of the investigation. </span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7556","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","usgsCitation":"Waller, B.G., and Earle, J.E., 1975, Chemical and biological quality of water in part of the Everglades, southeastern Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-56, 157 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7556.","productDescription":"157 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":377417,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0056/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159297,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0056/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.727783203125,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.727783203125,\n              26.931865156388916\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              26.931865156388916\n            ],\n            [\n              -81.474609375,\n              25.11544539706194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e1e4b07f02db5e48ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waller, Bradley G.","contributorId":83492,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Waller","given":"Bradley","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203083,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Earle, James E.","contributorId":88382,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Earle","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203084,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The area is essentially urban, although the towns in the upper basin still retain some rural character. The population of the middle and upper parts increased 80 percent between 1950 and 1970, while the population in the lower part declined 4 percent. The Lake Wingra basin, which includes a small eutrophic lake within the city of Madison, Wis., is partly a protected area and partly an urbanized area. Measured and estimated inflow and outflow to and from the lake in 1 year (June 1972 to May 1973) was about 4.5 metres (15 feet)&mdash;approximately twice the volume of the lake. Inflow to the lake is about 25 percent from direct precipitation on the lake surface, and the rest from nearly equal amounts of surface runoff and ground-water inflow. Outflow from the lake is about 10 percent ground-water outflow, 15 percent evaporation from the lake surface, and 75 percent discharge at the surface outlet. Increased withdrawal of water from municipal and industrial wells in Madison has slowed the rate of flow through the lake.</p>\n<p>The calculated 1972 water budget for the lake showed gains of about 3,560 millimetres (140 inches) and losses of about 3,500 millimetres (138 inches). A discrepancy of about 60 millimetres (2 inches) probably was caused in part by uncertainties in ground-water inflow and outflow. Effects of evapotranspiration and ground-water inflow in the marsh area southwest of the lake also probably contribute to the discrepancy.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7517","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with University of Wisconsin-Extension, Geological and Natural History Survey","usgsCitation":"Oakes, E.L., Hendrickson, G.E., and Zuehls, E., 1975, Hydrology of the Lake Wingra basin, Dane County, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-17, v, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7517.","productDescription":"v, 31 p.","numberOfPages":"40","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":57790,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0017/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":119757,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0017/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dane County","otherGeospatial":"Lake Wingra","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -89.61273193359375,\n              42.8699254870066\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.61273193359375,\n              43.303195047973034\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.0826416015625,\n              43.303195047973034\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.0826416015625,\n              42.8699254870066\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.61273193359375,\n              42.8699254870066\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db601b79","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Oakes, Edward L.","contributorId":79517,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Oakes","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200617,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hendrickson, G. The goal in operating these networks has been to obtain sufficient data for estimating flood frequency at ungaged sites with the equivalent accuracy expected from 10 years of observed flood records. In some areas the networks have accumulated sufficient data to satisfy these accuracy goals. A review of these networks, looking toward possible reduction of the number of gages, is now timely. Continued operation of a few selected gages may be desirable to provide a longer time-sample base for improving the flood-frequency estimating equation and(or) to expand the area over which the equations apply.</p><p>In 1974, Thomas Maddock III developed a rational method for selecting gages to be retained in a reduced hydrologic network. This method of network analysis seeks the optimum set of gages to be retained for a given level of annual operating costs with the information content of the reduced network being the factor optimized. Application of Maddock's method demonstrated that a considerable number of gages could be eliminated from a network without grossly decreasing its information content.</p><p>Maddock's method of analysis is described in detail for a hypothetical network of gages. The method also is applied to actual networks in Montana, Illinois, and Georgia.</p><p>The analysis of networks in Montana illustrates the basic approach to selecting an optimal subset from the existing set of gages. The Illinois analysis demonstrated that by retaining only 26 percent of the gages, nearly 63 percent of the original information is retained in the reduced network. Application of the procedure shows how the design of networks in Georgia may be modified because of hydrologic considerations to meet budgetary constraints.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7530","usgsCitation":"Carrigan, P.H., and Golden, H.G., 1975, Optimizing information transfer in a stream-gaging network: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 75-30, v, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7530.","productDescription":"v, 25 p.","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157924,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0030/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":349792,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/0030/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aefe4b07f02db69138d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carrigan, Philip Hadley Jr.","contributorId":86768,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carrigan","given":"Philip","suffix":"Jr.","email":"","middleInitial":"Hadley","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196506,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Golden, Harold G.","contributorId":103244,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Golden","given":"Harold","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196507,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Evaporation in this arid basin exceeds the 4 inches (100 millimetres) of annual precipitation. Fifteen test holes, ranging in depth from 40 to 240 feet (12 to 73 metres) below land surface, indicate that ground water occurs mostly in Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks overlying pre-Tertiary quartz monzonite. Depth to water averages about 100 feet (30 metres) below land surface. Hydraulic conductivity of cores of Tertiary rock taken from a test hole at depths of 9 to 88 feet (2.7 to 27 metres) below land surface suggests values of 6.9 x 10-5 to 4.9 x 10<sup>-3</sup> feet per day (2.1 x 10<sup>-5</sup> to 1.5 x 10<sup>-3</sup> metres per day). Petrographic analyses of these cores indicate a material consisting mostly of weathered volcanic rocks with a moderate concentration of montmorillonite clay.</p><p>The water-level gradient averages about 4 feet per mile (0.76 metre per kilometre). Ground-water discharge through a narrow gap in the southeastern part of the basin is calculated to be 3.8 x 10<sup>-4</sup> acre-feet (4.7 x 10<sup>-7</sup> cubic hectometres) per year. After leaving the basin, the underflow becomes part of a regional flow system discharging into Harper Lake playa.</p><p>An increase in the underflow from 3.8 x 10<sup>-4</sup> acre-feet (4.7 x 10<sup>-7</sup> cubic hectometres) per year to 3 acre-feet (4 x 10<sup>-3</sup> cubic hectometres) per year may result in an undesirable surface-water flow by increasing the saturated thickness of the aquifer near the narrow gap in the southeastern part of the basin. Also, the very low hydraulic-conductivity values suggest that some difficulties may exist in percolating 3 acre-feet (4 x 10<sup>-3</sup> cubic hectometres) per year of wastes resulting in possible saturation of the ground surface outside the boundaries of the potential Class-I site. Because the rate of evaporation is very high (116 inches or 294.6 millimetres per year) in the study area, many of the problems associated with the percolation of the waste water and the subsequent changes in ground-water movement could be minimized by evaporating the wastes to complete dryness.</p><p>The quality of the ground water in the basin is generally unsuitable for domestic, industrial, and irrigation purposes. Problems related to development of the aquifer include maximum safe yield, local contamination, local salt-water intrusion, corrosiveness of the water, areas of high iron concentration, and increasing nitrate concentration. The city of Pensacola is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system. </p><p>This report summarizes the third year's findings of a 6-year study of the sand-and-gravel aquifer. Although the thickness of the aquifer locally exceeds 1,000 feet (300 metres) most of the clean sand layers are no more than 450 feet (140 metres) below land surface. The highest head is at the north edge of the area; the head is drawn down below sea level in areas of heavy pumping. Ground water moves southward from the northern half of the county to be intercepted near Cantonment. Virtually all ground water discharged south of Cantonment derives from local precipitation. </p><p>The report contains maps showing concentrations of carbon dioxide, nitrate, and iron in water from the aquifer, potentiometric maps, geohydrologic sections, and lithologic and radioactive logs of test holes.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The depth to water in the area studied ranged from about 50 feet (15 metres) to more than 200 feet (61 metres). Dissolved-solids concentrations greater than 500 milligrams per litre exist in the shallow aquifers in the eastern and southern parts of the study area. The permeability of the shallow sediments ranges from 15 to 50 feet per day (5 to 15 metres per day). The eastern part of the area is underlain by fine-grained sediments that effectively separate the deep and shallow aquifers and would not be conducive to artificial recharge. In the western part of the area, sediments in the upper 100 feet (30 metres) are primarily sand. Considering all but economic factors, the most hydrologically favorable area for recharge is west of Washington Street and north of the Whitewater River.</p><p>Using three spreading pits on a rotating basis and assuming long-term infiltration rates of 2 feet per day (0.6 metre per day), an area of 33 acres (13 hectares) would be required to infiltrate 8,000 acre-feet (9.9 cubic hectometres) per year. At the recharge site, a water-level rise of about 36 feet (11 metres) due to recharge is expected.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7433","usgsCitation":"Moreland, J.A., 1975, Evaluation of recharge potential near Indio, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 74-33, iv, 36 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7433.","productDescription":"iv, 36 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":358929,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0033/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159430,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0033/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Indio","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.3587760925293,\n              33.70663387044635\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25097274780272,\n              33.70663387044635\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25097274780272,\n              33.77343983379775\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.3587760925293,\n              33.77343983379775\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.3587760925293,\n              33.70663387044635\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fabc5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moreland, Joe A.","contributorId":48171,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moreland","given":"Joe","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
