The predominant form of dissolved nitrogen was nitrate. Nitrate concentrations (as N) in the upper glacial aquifer in both counties ranged from 0 to 20 milligrams per liter (mg/L) ; those in the Magothy aquifer ranged from 0 to 20 mg/L but were generally much lower in Suffolk County than in Nassau County. Nitrate concentrations (as N) decreased with depth in both counties; below 400 feet, concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.2 mg/L. \r\n\r\nNitrate concentrations (as N) of streams ranged from 0 to ii mg/L, which is an indication of the general quality of water in much of the upper glacial aquifer, the source of most of the streamflow. Generally, concentrations of total nitrogen in streams draining the sewered area of Nassau County were lower than those in streams draining the unsewered area. Median concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen (as N) were 1.3 mg/L for the sewered area and 7.5 mg/L for the unsewered area. About 5,500 pounds of nitrate (as N) was estimated to be discharged daily in surface flow to tidewater from Nassau and Suffolk Counties.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77433","usgsCitation":"Katz, B.G., Ragone, S.E., and Harr, C.A., 1977, Nitrogen in water in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Long Island, New York, in 1971: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-433, 46 leaves :maps (some fold. in envelope) ;29 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77433.","productDescription":"46 leaves :maps (some fold. in envelope) ;29 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141242,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37493,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37494,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37495,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37496,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37497,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0433/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697288","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Katz, Brian G. bkatz@usgs.gov","contributorId":1093,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Katz","given":"Brian","email":"bkatz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":160227,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ragone, Stephen E.","contributorId":74374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ragone","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160229,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Harr, C. The sites were Mapleton Depot and Newport, Pennsylvania, on the Juniata River, and Harrisburg and Marietta, Pennsylvania, and Conowingo, Maryland, on the Susquehanna River. The purpose for the simulations was to determine the effects of a new reservoir, Raystown Lake, on the low-flow frequency characteristics of these sites. Raystown Lake is on Raystown Branch Juniata River, a tributary to the Juniata River.
\n
Output from a reservoir-regulation model of Raystown Lake was used as input to the flow-routing models. In addition, a reservoir-routing model was developed for the hydroelectric power dams on the lower Susquehanna River.
\n
Low-flow frequency curves, based on the post-Raystown Lake simulated flows, were compared to similar curves based on pre-Raystown observed data. The comparison indicated that operation of the lake will cause estimated increases in the 7-day 10-year low flows ranging from 420 cfs at Mapleton Depot to 290 cfs at Marietta and Conowingo over the 7-day 10-year low flows for pre-Raystown conditions.
\n
Although inherent modeling errors exist in all of these simulated data, the overall quality of the simulated flows and the low-flow frequency curves is considered good. Sulfide occurs almost exclusively as the iron disulfides pyrite and marcasite, in concentrations as high as 2 percent of the coarse (>62 ?m) fraction. Marcasite is particularly abundant relative to pyrite in the vicinity of the roll front. Because marcasite precipitation requires acidic pH's and the most likely mechanism for generating a low pH is oxidation of preore sulfide, it is argued that marcasite formation is, at least in part, related to roll-front development. Organic carbon analyses from various representative parts of the deposit are uniformly low (<0.1 percent C). \r\n\r\nThis is taken to imply that sulfate reducing bacteria were not involved in either initial sulfidation of the host rock or during later sulfidization that was related to the ore-forming episode. carbonate minerals, such as calcite, are quite abundant, but appear to have formed after the ore. The overall abundance of iron apparently is not systematically related to position with respect to the roll front, whereas manganese probably is concentrated near the redox interface. Titanium like iron does not show a systematic relationship to position about the roll. However, titanium is systematically more abundant in the fine fraction (462 ?m) relative to the coarse fraction with distance downdip. This reflects a progressively more intense alteration of precursor iron titanium oxide minerals to fine-grained TiO2.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77821","usgsCitation":"Goldhaber, M.B., and Reynolds, R.L., 1977, Geochemical and mineralogical studies of a South Texas roll-front uranium deposit: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-821, iii, 34 p. :ill. ;27 cm.; (37 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77821.","productDescription":"iii, 34 p. :ill. ;27 cm.; (37 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141939,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0821/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36792,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0821/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae5de","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Goldhaber, Martin B. 0000-0002-1785-4243 mgold@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1785-4243","contributorId":1339,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Goldhaber","given":"Martin","email":"mgold@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":211,"text":"Crustal Geophysics and Geochemistry Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":171,"text":"Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":159230,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Reynolds, Richard L. 0000-0002-4572-2942 rreynolds@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4572-2942","contributorId":441,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reynolds","given":"Richard","email":"rreynolds@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":271,"text":"Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":159229,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The site, which includes about 7.8 km 2, is highly accessible and is adjacent to a railroad. \r\n\r\nThe anticline is one of a series of northwest-trending salt anticlines lying along the northeast edge of the Paradox basin. These anticlines are cored by evaporites of the Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation of Middle Pennsylvanian age. \r\n\r\nThe central core of the Salt Valley anticline forms a ridgelike mass of evaporites that has an estimated amplitude of 3,600 m. The evaporite core consists of about 87 percent halite rock, which includes some potash deposits; the remainder is black shale, silty dolomite, and anhydrite. The latter three lithologies are referred to as 'marker beds.' Using geophysical logs from drill holes on the anticline, it is possible to demonstrate that the marker beds are complexly folded and faulted. \r\n\r\nAvailable data concerning the geothermal gradient and heatflow at the site indicate that heat from emplaced wastes should be rapidly dissipated. \r\n\r\nPotentially exploitable resources of potash and petroleum are present at Salt Valley. Development of these resources may conflict with use of the site for waste emplacement.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77761","usgsCitation":"Hite, R.J., 1977, Subsurface geology of a potential waste emplacement site, Salt Valley Anticline, Grand County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-761, ii, 26 p. :ill., map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77761.","productDescription":"ii, 26 p. :ill., map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141036,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0761/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37237,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0761/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699a1f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hite, R. The seven include the five largest of the eastern North American earthquake .centers. The immediate localities of the gravity anomalies are, however, relatively free of seismicity, particularly the largest events. The anomalies are presumably caused by extensive mafic or ultramafic masses embedded in the crystalline basement. Laboratory experiments show that serpentinized gabbro and dunite fail under stress in a creep mode rather than in a stick-slip mode. A possible explanation of the correlation between the earthquake patterns and the anomalies is that the mafic/ultramafic masses are serpentinized and can only sustain low stress fields thereby acting to concentrate regional stress outside their boundaries. The proposed model is analogous to the hole-in-plate problem of mechanics whereby stresses around a hole in a stressed plate may. reach values several times the average.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77134","usgsCitation":"Kane, M.F., 1977, Correlation of major eastern earthquake centers with mafic/ultramafic basement masses: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-134, 16 leaves :maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77134.","productDescription":"16 leaves :maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143106,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0134/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37481,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0134/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db6845fa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kane, Martin Francis","contributorId":87923,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kane","given":"Martin","email":"","middleInitial":"Francis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160214,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The magnitude and frequency of floods up to the 100-year recurrence interval can be determined for most streams in Minnesota by methods presented. By multiple regression analysis, equations have been developed for estimating flood-frequency relations at ungaged sites on natural flow streams. Eight distinct hydrologic regions are delineated within the State with boundaries defined generally by river basin divides. Regression equations are provided for each region which relate selected frequency floods to significant basin parameters. For main-stem streams, graphs are presented showing floods for selected recurrence intervals plotted against contributing drainage area. Flow-frequency estimates for intervening sites along the Minnesota River, Mississippi River, and the Red River of the North can be derived from these graphs. Prior to construction, samples of water, bed material, and soil were collected throughout the impoundment site to determine concentrations of nutrients, insecticides, trace metals, suspended sediment, and bacteria.
\n
\n
Analyses of water suggest the Tulpehocken Creek basin to be a highly fertile environment. Nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations near the proposed dam site had median values of 4.5 and 0.13 mg/L, respectively.
\n
\n
Suspended sediment discharges average between 100 and 200 tons (90.7 to 181.4 metric tons) per day during normal flows but may exceed 10,000 tons (9,070 metric tons) per day during storm runoff. Highest yields were measured during winter and early spring. Concentrations range from 3 mg/L to more than 500 mg/L.
\n
\n
Bed material samples contain trace quantities of aldrin, DDT, DDD, DDE, dieldrin, and chlordane. Polychlorinated biphyenyls (PCB's) ranged from 10 to 100 μg/kg.
\n
\n
Soils at the impoundment site are of average fertility. However, the silt loam texture is ideal for attachment and growth of aquatic plants.
\n
\n
Bacteria populations indicative of recent fecal contamination are prevalent in the major inflows to the proposed lake. Fecal Coliform exceeded the standards recommended by the Federal Water Pollution Administration Committee on Water Quality Criteria for public water supply in 29 percent of the monthly samples, and exceeded the recommended public bathing waters standard in 83 percent of the samples collected from June to September.
\n
\n
Arsenic from an industrial waste was found in the water, suspended sediment, and bed material of Tulpehocken Creek in concentrations of 0 to 30 μg/l, 2 to 879 μg/l, and 1 to 79 μg/g, respectively. These finite elements were superimposed over finite-difference cells used to solve the flow equation. Both convection and flow due to hydraulic dispersion were considered. Linear and Hermite cubic approximations (basis functions) provided satisfactory results: however, the linear functions were computationally more efficient for two-dimensional problems. Successive over relaxation (SOR) and iteration techniques using Tchebyschef polynomials were used to solve the sparce matrices generated using the linear and Hermite cubic functions, respectively. Comparisons of the finite-element methods to the finite-difference methods, and to analytical results, indicated that a high degree of accuracy may be obtained using the method outlined. The technique was applied to a field problem involving an aquifer contaminated with chloride, tritium, and strontium-90.
