These beds lie in the lower part of the Sentinel Butte Member of the Fort Union Formation (Paleocene). \r\n\r\nThe demonstrated resources of both beds combined is 122 million tons (110 million tonnes), all of which are under less than 120 feet (37 meters) of overburden. The overburden consists of glacial till and shale. \r\n\r\nThe lateral continuity of the coal has been locally interrupted by faulting, glacial outwash channels, and erosion. The .model was calibrated under steady-state conditions to simulate the September 1975 potentiometric surface. Under one development plan, existing phosphate mines in Polk County would continue to withdraw ground water at 1975 rates, until phased out as the ore is depleted; no new mines would be introduced. Preliminary results indicate that under this plan, maximum simulated recovery of the potentiometric surface is 11.9 feet by 1985 and 36.5 feet by 2000. Under an alternative plan, all proposed mines in Polk, Hardee, DeSoto, Hillsborough and Manatee Counties would begin operations: in addition to the continuation and phasing out of existing mines. Preliminary results indicate that the potentiometric surface would generally recover in Polk County and decline elsewhere in the modeled area. Maximum simulated recovery is 4.5 feet by 1985 and 29.6 feet by 2000; maximum simulated drawdown is 15.1 feet by 1985 and feet by 2000. All results are preliminary and subject to revision as the investigation continues.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr77882","usgsCitation":"Wilson, W.E., 1977, Simulated changes in ground-water levels resulting from proposed phosphate mining, west-central Florida; preliminary results: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-882, vi, 57 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm. --, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77882.","productDescription":"vi, 57 p. :ill., maps ;27 cm. --","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145039,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0882/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39578,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0882/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8902","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, William Edward","contributorId":82321,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Edward","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163585,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Of the approximately 77 inches of precipitation on the peninsula, an estimated 23 inches is lost to evapotranspiration, and approximately 36 inches is discharged by the water-table aquifer into the ocean and bay. The remaining water either runs off the surface or is leaked to a deeper aquifer that ultimately discharges to the ocean. In some areas of the peninsula, particularly those that are low lying and covered with poorly permeable soils, runoff is promoted by an artificial drainage system developed to alleviate waterlogging. In these areas, it is estimated that natural discharge through the aquifer would be less than that of the artificial drainage system. By a conservative estimate, at least 12 inches of the water that discharges naturally through the aquifer is available for additional development. This quantity of water is approximately equivalent to 860,000 gallons per day or 320 million gallons per year per mile of peninsula length. Under specified idealized conditions wells spaced at least 1,000 feet apart along the major axis of the peninsula and pumped at average rates of no more than 80 gallons per minute would ensure that water-level declines do not exceed 6 feet near the wells and 1 foot at the shoreline, thereby preventing seawater intrusion. Lowering of the water table may be beneficial in reducing waterlogging problems, but care must be taken not to lower the levels near cranberry bogs, which require a shallow water table. Treatment of the otherwise good quality water for iron may be required, as about 75 percent of the well water sampled from the aquifer had iron concentrations in excess of limits recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr77647","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Pacific County Board of Commissioners and the State of Washington Department of Ecology","usgsCitation":"Tracy, J.V., 1977, Ground-water resources of the North Beach Peninsula, Pacific County, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 77-647, vi, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr77647.","productDescription":"vi, 45 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145091,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0647/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":363673,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1977/0647/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","county":"Pacific County","otherGeospatial":"North Beach Peninsula","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -124.17572021484375,\n              46.240651955001695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.66348266601562,\n              46.240651955001695\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.66348266601562,\n              46.76056154244133\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.17572021484375,\n              46.76056154244133\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.17572021484375,\n              46.240651955001695\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65a74a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tracy, James V.","contributorId":52585,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tracy","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163180,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Tsala Apopka Lake is a series of shallow , interconnected lakes, ponds, and marshes whose water surface slopes northward at 0.5 foot per mile. According to aerial photographs of December 1972, only 6 percent of the 103 square miles of study area is covered by open water. Open water is abundant along the western side of the lake, dense and sparse marshes occupy most of the lake area, and swamps occupy a thick zone around the Withlacoochee River which borders the lake to the east. Only a small fraction of the total surface flow occurs through the lake. The average lake outflow through S-351 canal is 23.6 cfs; while the average river flow at Holder is 714 cfs. Tsala Apopka Lake is hydraulically connected to the Floridan aquifer. At low flow, the major source of water in the river is ground water from the Floridan aquifer. The specific conductance of water in the Floridan aquifer averages 250-350 umho/cm (micromhos per centimeter) at 25C in this area. The specific conductance of water in the Withlacoochee River near Holder averages 268 umho/cm at 25C, while water in Tsala Apopka Lake at Hernando averages 139 umho/cm at 25C.
