Peterson, district chief; Winchell Smith, assistant district chief for hydrologic data; and Leonard N. Jorgensen, chief of the basic data section. Descriptions of known mineral deposits and occurrences in the quadrangle provided by MacKevett (1976b) should be used in conjunction with this map. Areas enclosing both known deposits and areas favorable for unfound deposits are delineated in the mineral resources map. Types of deposits known to be widely scattered throughout the quadrangle, such as placer gold, and types with only a slight chance of being in the quadrangle are not delineated. Selection of favorable areas was based on occurrences of known deposits and geologic, geophysical, geochemical, and earth satellite data presented in the McCarthy folio (U.S. Geol. Survey MF maps 773A, B, D-N and Circular 739) and some additional geochemical data published in open-file form (O'Leary and others, 1976). When, used as total-count devices, the sondes are comparable in logging speed and counting rate with conventional scintillation detectors for locating zones of high radioactivity. When used with a multichannel analyzer, the sondes are detectors with such high resolution that individual lines from the complex spectra of the uranium and thorium series can be distinguished. Gamma rays from each group of the uranium series can be measured in ore zones permitting determination of the state of equilibrium at each measurement point. Series of 10-minute spectra taken at 0.3- to 0.5-m intervals in several holes showed zones where maxima from the uranium group and from the 222Rn group were displaced relative to each other. Apparent excesses of 230Th at some locations suggest that uranium-group concentrations at those locations were severalfold greater some tens of kiloyears, ago. At the current state of development a 10-minute count yields a sensitivity of about 80 ppm U308. Data reduction could in practice be accomplished in about 5 minutes. The result is practically unaffected by disequilibrium or radon contamination. In comparison with core assay, high-resolution spectrometry samples a larger volume; avoids problems due to incomplete core recovery, loss of friable material to drilling fluids, and errors in depth and marking; and permits use of less expensive drilling methods. Because gamma rays from the radionuclides are accumulated simultaneously, it also avoids the problems inherent in trying to correlate logs made in separate runs with different equipment.\r\n\r\nContinuous-motion delayed-gamma activation by a 163-?g 252Cf neutron source attached to the sonde yielded poor sensitivity. The GIPSY retrieval program contains simple commands which can be used to search the file, select a narrowly defined subset, sort the records, and output the data in a variety of forms. Eight commands are listed and explained so that the GEOTHERM file can be accessed directly by geologists. The published data represents 2,733 station-years of data from 527 stations, ranging from one sample from a station once during the thirty--year period to a continuously operating daily station were more than one hundred samples were collected in a year. The last comprehensive index was published in 1963; since that time various unpublished indexes have been in use, none of which were complete.\r\nMost of the water-quality data collected and published prior to 1970 was for the common inorganic constituents such as, calcium, magnesium, sodium, alkalinity, chloride and sulfate. Since 1970 other types of data such as the minor or trace metals, organic compounds including pesticides, nutrients, oxygen resources, and biologic information have been collected and published with ever increasing frequency.\r\n\r\nThis index was designed to provide the data user a means of rapid search for stations by downstream order (Table 2), county (Table 4), and alphabetically by stream or station name (Table 1).
