The derivation presented is more detailed but less rigorous than derivations published previously. The general solute-transport equation relates concentration changes to hydrodynamic dispersion, convective transport, fluid sources and sinks, and chemical reactions. Because both dispersion and convective transport depend on the velocity of ground-water flow, the solute-transport equation must be solved in conjunction with the ground-water flow equation. Downward leakage, or recharge, is limited under natural conditions owing to the nearness to land surface of the potentiometric surface of both the sand aquifer and the underlying Floridan aquifer. Continuous cores of the unconsolidated section were obtained at 74 sites in the study area and were evaluated for downward leakage potential based on grain-size distribution. Sand percentage was estimated for each interval or bed from microscopic examination of the core samples. The four maps prepared from this data show sand thickness, clay thickness, relative vertical hydraulic conductivity of the confining beds and the relative potential for downward leakage. About 20 percent (178 sq mi) of the area classified has a relatively good potential for downward leakage; almost 50 percent of the area has a relatively poor potential. They are flooding, landsliding, and subsidence over underground mines. In 1973, information was most complete relative to flooding and least complete relative to landsliding. </p><p>Accordingly, in July 1973, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) entered into an agreement by which the USGS undertook studies chiefly aimed at increasing knowledge of landsliding and mine subsidence relative to land use, but having other ramifications as well, as part of a larger ARC 'Land-use and physical-resource analysis' (LUPRA) program. The chief geographic focus was Allegheny County, but adjacent areas were included in some investigations. </p><p>Resulting products, exclusive of this report, are: </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. Forty-three provisional maps of landslide, distribution and susceptibility and of land modified by man in Allegheny County, 1:24,000 scale, 7½ -minute quadrangle format, released to open files. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2. Four USGS Miscellaneous Field Studies (MF) maps of Allegheny County showing (a) bedrock, MF685A; (b) susceptibility to landsliding, MF-685B ; (c) coal-mining features, MF-685C; and (d) zones that can be affected by flooding, landsliding and undermining, MF-685D; all at the scale of 1:50,000. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">3. Two MF maps showing coal-mining activity and related information and sites of recorded mine-subsidence events, and one MF map classifying land surface by relative potentiality of mine subsidence, in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties, Pa., at a scale of 1:125,000--MF-693A through MF-693C. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">4. A companion report to the Allegheny County map of susceptibility to landsliding--USGS Circular 728. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">5. Five MF maps, largely in chart form, describing interaction of the shallow ground-water regime with mining-related problems, landsliding, heavy storm precipitation, and other features and processes, largely in Allegheny County--MF-641A through MF-641E. </p><p>Map products are directly applicable to general classification of land for susceptibility to landsliding and mine subsidence and, to a lesser extent, flooding and engineering characteristics. The hydrogeologic charts enable greater understanding of environmental effects of ground water. All products are guides to expected conditions, but none are substitutes for detailed investigations of specific sites by competent technical personnel on the ground. </p><p>Specific results and findings are: </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. Knowledge of .susceptibility to landsliding in Allegheny County now is adequate for application to countywide land-use planning. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2. About 110 mi<sup>2</sup> (285. km<sup>2)</sup>, or 15 percent, of the county has some significant degree of susceptibility to landsliding. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">3. Although a general classification of land in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties relative to mine-subsidence incidents was prepared, data are wholly inadequate for even moderately precise prediction of subsidence events over previously mined-out areas; the accumulation of adequate data might not repay the effort in terms of damage prevention. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">4. Commonwealth-of-Pennsylvania regulations, have been very successful in limiting mine-subsidence damage over areas mined after 1966. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">5. Undermining and consequent subsidence may have affected the ground-water regime more widely than heretofore believed. </p><p>Except for the earth-disturbance inventory that resulted in the maps of susceptibility to landsliding and man-modified land, methods used in the studies largely were conventional. The inventory and ensuing analysis combined aerial photographic interpretation with field work and incorporation of existing data. The method worked very well for the purposes of defining distribution of landslides and areas having different susceptibilities to landsliding. However, if susceptibility to landsliding alone had been the goal, this could have been determined adequately by using photographs at smaller scales and appreciably less expenditure of effort per unit This slope must be of sufficient magnitude to be accuratly measured with available stage measuring devices. On highly regulated streams, this slope approaches zero during periods of low flow and accurate measurement is difficult. Methods are described to calibrate multipurpose regulating control structures to more accurately compute streamflow records on highly-regulated streams. Hydraulic theory, assuming steady, uniform flow during a computational interval, is described for five different types of flow control. The controls are: Tainter gates, hydraulic turbines, fixed spillways, navigation locks, and crest gates. Detailed calibration procedures are described for the five different controls as well as for several flow regimes for some of the controls. The instrumentation package and computer programs necessary to collect and process the field data are discussed. Two typical calibration procedures and measurement data are presented to illustrate the accuracy of the methods. Adequate exploration to find fracture or solution openings is required. Five hundred gallons per minute (30 liters per second) or more may be obtained from some of the carbonate rocks. Linear features are visible on 1:1,000,000-to 1:24,000-scale aerial imagery. Many linear features, but not all, have geologic or hydrologic significance, and some may indicate fractured rock that might be tapped by wells. Dissolved-solids concentration of most ground water is less than 500 milligrams per liter. Chemical-quality problems are predominantly caused by acidity, iron and manganese, or nitrate. The measurements show the response of the Fox Hills-Hell Creek aquifer of Late Cretaceous age to withdrawals for domestic, stock, and industrial uses. Water levels were as much as 109 feet lower in 1975 than they were in 1962-64. During the same period water levels lowered by 10 feet under about 400 square miles. From 1962-64 to 1969 water levels declined by as much as 133 feet. From 1969 to 1975 water levels rose as much as 46 feet near the outcrop of the aquifer and lowered 10 feet or more beneath about 100 square miles. Decreases in the rate of pumping from industrial wells near the outcrop have caused the water-level rise. Withdrawals from domestic and stock wells have remained the same or increased during the last 14 years and have contributed to water-level declines in areas west of the aquifer 's outcrop. This hydrologic year was characterized by heavier than normal winter precipitation in California and Washington and abnormally dry winter conditions in coastal Alaska. In summer the western conterminous states were abnormally dry and central and southern Alaska experienced very wet conditions.\r\n\r\nMaclure Glacier (lat 37 deg 45' N., 3,650-m (metres) mean equilibrium line altitude) had an above normal winter balance of 3.46 m and a positive annual balance of 1.05 m (metres of water equivalent).\r\n\r\nSouth Cascade Glacier (lat 48 deg 22' N., 1900-m mean equilibrium line altitude) had a winter balance of 3.28 m, slightly above average.
