They are flooding, landsliding, and subsidence over underground mines. In 1973, information was most complete relative to flooding and least complete relative to landsliding. </p><p>Accordingly, in July 1973, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) entered into an agreement by which the USGS undertook studies chiefly aimed at increasing knowledge of landsliding and mine subsidence relative to land use, but having other ramifications as well, as part of a larger ARC 'Land-use and physical-resource analysis' (LUPRA) program. The chief geographic focus was Allegheny County, but adjacent areas were included in some investigations. </p><p>Resulting products, exclusive of this report, are: </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. Forty-three provisional maps of landslide, distribution and susceptibility and of land modified by man in Allegheny County, 1:24,000 scale, 7½ -minute quadrangle format, released to open files. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2. Four USGS Miscellaneous Field Studies (MF) maps of Allegheny County showing (a) bedrock, MF685A; (b) susceptibility to landsliding, MF-685B ; (c) coal-mining features, MF-685C; and (d) zones that can be affected by flooding, landsliding and undermining, MF-685D; all at the scale of 1:50,000. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">3. Two MF maps showing coal-mining activity and related information and sites of recorded mine-subsidence events, and one MF map classifying land surface by relative potentiality of mine subsidence, in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties, Pa., at a scale of 1:125,000--MF-693A through MF-693C. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">4. A companion report to the Allegheny County map of susceptibility to landsliding--USGS Circular 728. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">5. Five MF maps, largely in chart form, describing interaction of the shallow ground-water regime with mining-related problems, landsliding, heavy storm precipitation, and other features and processes, largely in Allegheny County--MF-641A through MF-641E. </p><p>Map products are directly applicable to general classification of land for susceptibility to landsliding and mine subsidence and, to a lesser extent, flooding and engineering characteristics. The hydrogeologic charts enable greater understanding of environmental effects of ground water. All products are guides to expected conditions, but none are substitutes for detailed investigations of specific sites by competent technical personnel on the ground. </p><p>Specific results and findings are: </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">1. Knowledge of .susceptibility to landsliding in Allegheny County now is adequate for application to countywide land-use planning. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">2. About 110 mi<sup>2</sup> (285. km<sup>2)</sup>, or 15 percent, of the county has some significant degree of susceptibility to landsliding. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">3. Although a general classification of land in Allegheny, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties relative to mine-subsidence incidents was prepared, data are wholly inadequate for even moderately precise prediction of subsidence events over previously mined-out areas; the accumulation of adequate data might not repay the effort in terms of damage prevention. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">4. Commonwealth-of-Pennsylvania regulations, have been very successful in limiting mine-subsidence damage over areas mined after 1966. </p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\" data-mce-style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">5. Undermining and consequent subsidence may have affected the ground-water regime more widely than heretofore believed. </p><p>Except for the earth-disturbance inventory that resulted in the maps of susceptibility to landsliding and man-modified land, methods used in the studies largely were conventional. The inventory and ensuing analysis combined aerial photographic interpretation with field work and incorporation of existing data. The method worked very well for the purposes of defining distribution of landslides and areas having different susceptibilities to landsliding. However, if susceptibility to landsliding alone had been the goal, this could have been determined adequately by using photographs at smaller scales and appreciably less expenditure of effort per unit Equations relating flood magnitudes of selected frequency to basin characteristics such as drainage area, precipitation, and altitude were developed for six regions in the State. Nomographs are included for solution of the equations. Annual peak discharges for more than 700 streamflow stations, including more than 340 stations on streams with basins smaller than 10 square miles, were included in the analysis. Maximum known peak discharges are shown and their relation to drainage areas defined. Data on basin characteristics used in the regression analyses are tabulated. Some adjustments for urbanization effects based on flood-peak ratios for developed and undeveloped areas are suggested. These data, plus additional data and information, will form the basis for a future interpretive report. These data are being released separately from and prior to the interpretive report, to make them available to interested parties at the earliest possible time.</p><p>Table 1 contains temperature-profile data for 30 wells; their general locations are shown in figure 1. The well locations were estimated from aerial photographs and topographic maps; no effort was made to survey the sites and as a result some locations may be slightly in error.</p><p>Temperatures were measured using thermistor, 4-conductor cable, and a digital multimeter. Meter readings were in ohms, but were converted to temperature by a calibration graph. The electronic thermometer is capable of an accuracy to 0.01°C, and readings were so recorded. Because of variations in field conditions, the temperature data in many wells probably is accurate only to 0.1°C. Depths below land surface were measured using a sheave and attached counter. Dakota mines in the adjacent Ambrosia Lake mining district were visited briefly for comparative purposes. \r\n\r\nMines in the eastern part of the Gallup district, and in the Ambrosia Lake district, are on the Chaco slope of the southern San Juan Basin in strata which dip gently northward toward the central part of the basin. Mines in the western part of the Gallup district are along the Gallup hogback (Nutria monocline) in strata which dip steeply westward into the Gallup sag. \r\n\r\nGeologic factors which controlled formation of the uranium deposits in the Dakota Sandstone are: (1) a source of uranium, believed to be uranium deposits of the underlying Morrison Formation of Late Jurassic age; (2) the accessibility to the Dakota of uranium-bearing solutions from the Morrison; (3) the presence in the Dakota of permeable sandstone beds overlain by impermeable carbonaceous shale beds; and (4) the occurrence within the permeable Dakota sandstone beds of carbonaceous reducing material as bedding-plane laminae, or as pockets of carbonaceous trash. \r\n\r\nMost of the Dakota uranium deposits are found in the lower part of the formation in marginal-marine distributary-channel sandstones which were deposited in the backshore environment. However, the Hogback no. 4 (Hyde) Mine (Gallup district) occurs in sandy paludal shale of the backshore environment, and another deposit, the Silver Spur (Ambrosia Lake district), is found in what is interpreted to be a massive beach or barrier-bar sandstone of the foreshore environment in the upper part of the Dakota. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary depositional environment most favorable for the accumulation of uranium is that of backshore areas lateral to main distributary channels, where levee, splay, and some distributary-channel sandstones intertongue with gray carbonaceous shales and siltstones of the well-drained swamp environment. Deposits of black carbonaceous shale which were formed in the poorly drained swamp deposits of the interfluve area are not favorable host rocks for uranium. \r\n\r\nThe depositional energy levels of the various environments in which the sandstone and shale beds of the Dakota were deposited govern the relative favorability of the strata as uranium host rocks. In the report area, uranium usually occurs in carbonaceous sandstone deposited under low- to medium-energy fluvial conditions within distributary channels. A prerequisite, however, is that such sandstone be overlain by impermeable carbonaceous shale beds. \r\n\r\nLow- to medium-energy fluvial conditions result in the deposition of sandstone beds having detrital carbonaceous material distributed in laminae or in trash pockets on bedding planes. The carbonaceous laminae and trash pockets provide the necessary reductant to cause precipitation of uranium from solution. High-energy fluvial conditions result in the deposition of sandstones having little or no carbonaceous material included to provide a reductant. Crater density in the Arabia quadrangle is </span><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW27079863 BCX8\">similar to</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\"> the heavily cratered regions located south of the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\">equator owing to inclination of the great circle division between heavily and less cratered Martian terrains (</span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW27079863 BCX8\">Soberblom</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\"> and others (1974). Non</span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\">e </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\">of the large prominent telescopically defined Martian surface markings dominate the Arabia quadrangle, although the northern tip of </span><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW27079863 BCX8\">Meridiani</span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\">Sinus projects slightly into the extreme southwest corner. The topographic map of Mars (U. S. Geol. Survey, 1976) indicates that elevations in the Araba quadrangle rise toward the </span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW27079863 BCX8\">northeast. The water often contains unacceptable amounts of dissolved uranium, radium, iron, and selenium and suspended solids, but with treatment it can be made suitable for municipal and industrial purposes.
