A brief study involving collection and analysis of street sweepings was undertaken to provide the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with data on physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of dust and dirt accumulating on Portland streets. Most of the analyses selected were based on the pollutant loads predicted by the Storage, Treatment, Overflow, and Runoff Model (STORM). Five different basins were selected for sampling, and samples were collected three times in each basin. Because the literature reports no methodology for analysis of dust and dirt, the analytical methodology is described in detail. Results of the analyses are summarized in table 1.

Both the maximum growth rate (μm) and optimum light intensity (Iopt) fit an empirical function that increases exponentially with temperature up to an optimum (Topt), then declines rapidly as temperature exceeds Topt. Incorporation of these functions into Steele's growth equation gives a good estimate of specific growth rate over a wide range of temperature and light intensity. Rates of phosphate, ammonium and nitrate uptake were measured separately at 16 combinations of irradiance and temperature and following a spike addition of all starved cells initially took up nutrient at a rapid rate. This transitory surge was followed by a period of steady, substrate-saturated uptake that persisted until external nutrient concentration fell. Substrate-saturated NO3−-uptake proceeded at very slow rates in the dark and was stimulated by both increased temperature and irradiance; NH4+-uptake apparently proceeded at a basal rate at 8 and l4 C and was also stimulated by increased temperature and irradiance. Rates of NH4−-uptake were much higher than NO3−-uptake at all light-temperature combinations. Below 20 C, PO4−3-uptake was more rapid in dark than in light, but was light enhanced at 26 C.

One-way analyses of variance of data from nine USGS standard rocks indicated no significant differences in selenium content among bottles of any of these rocks.

Beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain and the Honeycomb Hills are uniquely associated with topaz-bearing rhyolite of Late Tertiary age and are restricted to porous water-laid tuff and breccia that contains carbonate clasts. The beryllium deposits are near both local and regional faults that probably provided conduits for mineralizing fluids.The beryllium deposits contain sizable but uneconomic concentrations of fluorite, lithium (in smectite), manganese oxides, zinc (in smectite and manganese oxides), and uranium, as well as many trace elements. Distinctive zones of argillic and feldspathic alteration enclose the beryllium deposits and generally are parallel to the original stratification of the host tuff. Anomalous concentrations of fluorine, beryllium, cesium, lithium, gallium, niobium, and yttrium occur in relatively unmineralized tuff nearby; these elements form extensive but discontinuous halos around the Spor Mountain beryllium and fluorspar district.The mineralized areas at Spor Mountain and the Honeycomb Hills may be the tops of extensive altered zones that contain deep ore deposits. Anomalous molybdenum, lead, tin, and tungsten in beryllium deposits at Spor Mountain may indicate such leakage. Consideration of possible zonation of ore deposits suggests that if ore deposits do exist at depth, they are in greisens, banded tactites, and medium to high temperature veins similar to the tin-beryllium deposits in the York Mountains of Alaska.

Ash flows swept down glaciated valleys on the south side of Aniakchak caldera, crossed a broad lowland with an altitude of less than 35 m, and continued on through passes as much as 260 m high in the Aleutian Range into the Pacific Ocean, a distance of some 50 km. North of Fisher caldera, ash flows flowed over a ridge barrier of 500 m and into the Bering Sea. Knowledge that ash flows have this mobility may help in understanding the distribution of other ash flows and in the discovery of their sources. © 1977 Geological Society of America.

In this zone occur the only known economic or near-economic deposits of gold, tin, and copper. Such deposits are typically localized by small east-west structural elements. Non-economic copper occurrences elsewhere in the region appear to be related to major northeast- and northwest-trending lineaments mapped on Landsat images. Mineral exploration should be primarily directed at the main east-west lineament, but two other possible east-west zones might be worthwhile targets also. The major east-west lineament projects through a break in the continental shelf, across the Atlantic along a large transoceanic fracture zone and into the African continent along a mapped tectonic trend that goes through an area that produces copper, gold, and tin. Global geophysical data suggest that the mapped east-west trend in South America is a surface reflection of structures that developed in the tectosphere in Precambrian time and that have persisted until the present. © 1977 Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Rocks of the North Fork terrane were previously considered to be of Paleozoic age and those of the Rattlesnake Creek to be of Paleozoic and Triassic age, on the basis of fossiliferous limestone bodies that are now considered to be exotic blocks. In both terranes, however, red cherts that are closely associated with ophiolitic rocks contain Late Triassic radiolarians; overlying cherts and siliceous tuffs contain Early or Middle Jurassic radiolarians. The Jurassic radiolarian fauna from the North Fork terrane is similar to a fauna contained in Franciscan chert near Santa Barbara in southern California.
The change in age assignment of the dominant rocks of these terranes, based on this new radiolarian data, indicates that the suture between the North Fork terrane and the Devonian rocks of the central metamorphic belt on the east probably formed during Middle or Late Jurassic time.
