Some of these are shown to be significantly more toxic to larvae of the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus L.) than to fishes. It is proposed that the death of lamprey larvae exposed to these compounds results from an acute hypotension (shock) with concomitant circulatory and respiratory failure. Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), on the other hand, appear to die, at higher concentrations of the toxin, due to a chemically-caused mechanical interference with respiration through the gills. A systematic series of studies of mononitrophenols containing halogens disclosed that those phenols having the nitro group in the para-position and a halogen atom or group in the meta-position are generally more toxic to lampreys than to fish. The halogens or halogen groups used in this study were fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and trifluormethyl. The same substituents in other positions only occasionally gave rise to selectively toxic compounds. Utah Basic-Data Release No. 11 contains data collected through 1964. This release contains climatologic and surface-water data for the 1965 water year (October 1964 to September 1965) and ground-water data collected during the 1965 calendar year. Similar annual releases will contain data collected during the remainder of the investigation, and interpretive reports will be prepared as the investigation proceeds. Field studies of the lake began August 27 and include repeated core drilling, measurements of temperature in the crust and melt, and precise level surveys of the lake surface. The last interstitial melt in the lake solidified late in September 1964; by mid August 1965 the maximum temperature was 690°C at a depth of 11.5 meters.</p><p>Pumice air-quenched from about 1140°C contains only 5 percent crystals — clinopyroxene, cuhedral olivine (<i>Fo</i><span>&nbsp;</span><sub>80</sub>), and a trace of plagioclase, (<i>An</i><span>&nbsp;</span><sub>70</sub>). Drill cores taken from the zone of crystallization in the lake show that olivine continued crystallizing to about 1070°C; below that it reacts with the melt, becoming corroded and mantled by pyroxene and plagioclase. Below 1070°C, pyroxene and plagioclase crystallized at a constant ratio. Ilmenite first appeared at about 1070°C and was joined by magnetite at about 1050°C; both increased rapidly in abundance to 1000°C. Apatite first appeared as minute needles in interstitial glass at 1000°C. Both the abundance and index of refraction of glass quenched from melt decreased nearly linearly with falling temperature. At 1070°C the quenched lava contains about 65 percent dark-brown glass with an index of 1.61; at 980°C it contains about 8 percent colorless glass with an index of 1.49. Below 980°C, the percentage of glass remained constant. Progressive crystallization forced exsolution of gases from the melt fraction; these formed vesicles and angular pores, causing expansion of the crystallizing lava and lifting the surface of the central part of the lake an average of 19.5 cm. The solidified basalt underwent pneumatolitic alteration, including deposition of cristobalite at 800°C, reddish alteration of olivine at 700°C, tarnishing of ilmenite at 550°C, deposition of anhydrite at 250°C, and deposition of native sulfur at 100°C. Ferric-ferrous ratios suggest that oxidation with maximum intensity between 550°C and 610°C moved downward in the crust as it cooled; this was followed by reduction at a temperature of about 100°C.</p><p>The crystallized basalt is a homogeneous fine-grained rock containing on the average 48.3 percent by volume intergranular pyroxene (augite &gt; pigeonite), 34.2 percent plagioclase laths (An<sub>60 70</sub>), 7.9 percent interstitial glass, 6.9 percent opaques (ilmenite &gt; magnetite), 2.7 percent olivine (Fo<sub>70 80</sub>), and a trace of apatite. Chemical analyses of 18 samples, ranging from initially quenched pumice to lava cored more than a year after the eruption from the center and from near the base of the lake, show little variation from silica-saturated tholeiitic basalt containing 50.4 percent SiO<sub>2</sub>, 2.4 percent Na<sub>2</sub>O, and 0.54 percent K<sub>2</sub>O. Apparently there was no significant crystal settling and no appreciable vapor-phase transport of these components during the year of crystallization. However, seven samples of interstitial liquid that had been filter-pressed into gash fractures and drill holes from partly crystalline mush near the base of the crust show large differences from the bulk composition of the solidified crust—lower MgO, CaO, and Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>; and higher total iron, TiO<sub>2</sub>, Na<sub>2</sub>O, K<sub>2</sub>O, P<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub>, and F, and, in most samples, SiO<sub>2</sub>. Measurements indicate that evaporation and condensation are negligible compared with the large runoff and precipitation values. Runoff, measured by a stream discharge station, averaged 4.04 m/yr; precipitation, determined by snow accumulation measurements at a central point on the glacier and by storage gages, averaged 3.82 m/yr, resulting in a basin net loss of about 0.22 m/yr. During the same period, South Cascade Glacier net budgets were determined by ablation stakes, snow density-depth profiles, and maps. The average glacier net budget for the period was −0.61sol;yr of water. This amount is equivalent to −0.26 m of water when averaged over the drainage basin (43% glacier-covered), which is in fair agreement with the net storage change measured by hydrologic methods. The sampler is used from a 12-m boat in water depths up to 20 m and in flow velocities up to 1.5m per second to sample river and estuarine deposits ranging from silty clay to medium sand. Even in sand that cannot be penetrated with conventional corers, the sampler achieves easy penetration through the combined application of vibration, suction, and axial force. A piston in the core barrel creates suction, and the suspension system is arranged so that tension on the support cable produces both a downward force on the core barrel and a lateral support against overturning. Samples are usually retained because of slight compaction in the driving head; as a precaution, however, the bottom of the core barrel is covered by a plate that closes after the barrel is withdrawn from the bed. Tests show that sample-retainers placed within the driving head restrict penetration and limit core lengths. ,{"id":70010758,"text":"70010758 - 1966 - Disequilibrium of the 238U series in basalt","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2020-11-24T13:13:29.759265","indexId":"70010758","displayToPublicDate":"1966-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1966","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"seriesTitle":{"id":1427,"text":"Earth and Planetary Science Letters","active":true,"publicationSubtype":{"id":10}},"title":"Disequilibrium of the 238U series in basalt","docAbstract":"<div id=\"abstracts\" class=\"Abstracts u-font-serif\"><div id=\"ab1\" class=\"abstract author\" lang=\"en\"><div id=\"aep-abstract-sec-id7\"><p>Radioisotope analyses of basalt samples from Hawaii, Japan, and Iwo Jima show that: (1)<sup>234</sup>U and<sup>238</sup>U are virtually in radioactive equilibrium, (2)<sup>230</sup>Th exceeds equilibrium values in all these samples, (3)<sup>210</sup>Pb concentrations range from 10–200% of the equilibrium values and average 30% deficient, and (4)<sup>226</sup>Ra is probably not in equilibrium with<sup>234</sup>U.</p><p>The source regions of the basalts or magma forming processes are open systems, chemically. The enrichment of some of the uranium-daughter nuclides is insufficient to account for the excess<sup>206</sup>Pb in volcanic rocks.</p><p>The isotopic composition of lead and specific activity of<sup>210</sup>Pb in sublimates from Showa-shinzan, Japan are also reported.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom These include surface and deep-water samples from both the cold North Atlantic area and the warm subtropical Caribbean area. The results differ from many of the previously reported values for strontium in sea water. It appears that the more correct value for<span>&nbsp;</span><i>soluble</i><span>&nbsp;</span>strontium in sea water is less than the commonly accepted figure of 8.0–8.2 mg/l and most likely lies between 7.2 and 7.8 mg/l. However, as millions of tones of such apatite are dissolved annually to make phosphoric acid, an opportunity exists for greatly increasing RE output as by-product of fertilizer production. New, complete, quantitative analysis of RE in representative apatite concentrates reveal that the potential for by-product RE equals current production. The data were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of John H. Hubble, district chemist.</p><p>The Geological Survey began publishing annual basic records of chemical quality, water temperatures, and suspended sediment in 1941 in the water-supply-paper series, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" The records for Missouri were first published in this series in 1948 when the records were being published in two volumes for the entire country. Beginning in 1950, the records were published in four volumes. Since 1959 these records have been published in five volumes; each volume covering an area where boundaries coincide with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records for Missouri are contained in Parts 5-6, 7 and 8 of the water-supply series.
