Total water requirements within the region are projected to rise sharply from 14 million acre-feet (17 cubic kilometres) in 1970 to nearly 26 million acre-feet (32.cubic kilometres) in 2020. About half of the water used in 1970 was ground water.
\n
An estimated total of 1.04 billion acre-feet (1,280 cubic kilometres) of recoverable water containing less than 3,000 milligrams per litre dissolved solids is stored above a depth of 400 feet (122 metres) in the aquifers of the region. In addition, part of an estimated 3.28 billion acre-feet (4,040 cubic kilometres) of water in storage below 400 feet (122 metres) is recoverable. Although not all of the ground water in storage is recoverable, a significant amount is available for development, and an enormous quantity is accessible should occasions prompt its use on a time-limited basis.
\n
The total steady-state yield (amount of water that approximates the maximum perennial replenishment from precipitation) of the region's aquifers is about 4.6 million acre-feet (5.7 cubic kilometres) annually, or about 2.3 times the ground-water usage in 1970 if the large mining draft on the High Plains is not considered as part of the total steady-state yield. Because of the large quantity of recoverable ground water in storage, the steady-state yield can be augmented for a very long time on a 'deferred' basis, whereby the economic use of the water that is withdrawn from storage in excess of the steady-state yield may result in a strengthened economy.
\n
An important goal in programs for meeting future water needs should be to identify the full potential of the available ground-water resources. The subsurface reservoirs may be utilized not only as sources of fresh and treatable water, but as storage facilities for other fresh-water-supplies and as possible sources of geothermal energy. Some saline-water reservoirs may be suitable for liquid-waste storage or disposal.
\n
Large-scale and unregulated ground-water pumping may result in hydrologic problems such as declining water levels, streamflow depletion, and land-surface subsidence; but studies on proper development of the groundwater reservoirs could provide solutions to many of the problems. Water rights and other legal concepts should be based on sound hydrologic principles to assist development of water resources in an orderly and efficient manner.
\n
Because significant amounts of ground water are available, the opportunities for expanded and conjunctive use of ground water and surface water should be considered in regional plans for water development and conservation. The complexities of water management and the difficulties of achieving an integrated system of total water management will require additional technical information.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr74331","usgsCitation":"Baker, E.T., and Wall, J.R., 1974, Summary appraisals of the Nation's ground-water This brackish water has been identified as the source of the water that contaminates the upper and lower fresh-water-bearing zones of the principal artesian aquifer. The confining unit separating the fresh and brackish water seems to contain breaks that act as vertical conduits for the movement of brackish water into the fresh-water zones of the aquifer. Faults are suspected to be responsible for the breaks in the confining unit. The rate of upward movement of brackish water seems to be a function of the rate of water-level decline in the aquifer. \r\n\r\nThere are two main areas of brackish-water intrusion. One area is near Bay and Prince Streets, and the other area is near Reynolds and Q Streets. Successive maps showing chloride ion concentration trace the movement of the chloride front northward in the Bay Street area at the rate of about 350 feet per year toward the center of pumping. An average of about 400 gallons per minute of water containing 2,000 milligrams per liter chloride invaded the upper water-bearing zone between December 1962 and December 1966. A like amount may have entered the lower water-bearing zone. Maximum chloride concentration in the upper water-bearing zone is 1,540 milligrams per liter in the Bay Street area and 640 milligrams per liter in the Reynolds Street area. \r\n\r\nIn a few areas, where individual wells have been drilled deep enough to penetrate the confining unit over the brackish-water zone, the well furnishes a conduit for brackish water to recharge the fresh-water aquifer. Plugging the lower part of these wells usually reduces the chloride concentration of the water.\r\n\r\nThe chloride concentration of water in the principal artesian aquifer can probably be reduced by use of interceptor wells, relief wells, or well-field spacing. Interceptor wells would prevent laterally moving brackish water from contaminating a well field. A relief well would tap and withdraw poor quality water from only the brackish-water zone to lower the head in that zone and decrease the rate of leakage into the fresh-water aquifer. Wider spacing of wells would prevent the development of a deep cone of depression and the steeper hydraulic gradients that accompany it. The brackish water pumped by the interceptor or relief wells could be used for industry, aquaculture, recreation, or for other processes in which the chloride content is not critical.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. From 1930 to 1972 only 18 floods at The Forks produced flow at Barstow, 55 miles (88 kilometres) downstream from The Forks. Peak discharges at Barstow from these floods ranged from 180 cubic feet per second (5 cubic metres per second) in 1967 to 64,300 cubic feet per second (1,820 cubic metres per second) in 1938. Total stream infiltration, primarily as ground-water recharge, ranged from 3,600 acre-feet (4.40 cubic hectometres) in 1935 to 50,400 acre-feet (62.1 cubic hectometres) in 1969 between The Forks and Victorville and from about 7,000 acre-feet (8.61 cubic hectometres) in 1935 to 128,000 acre-feet (158 cubic hectometres) in 1969 between Victorville and Barstow.

The Mojave Water Agency is considering the use of the channel of the river to convey water imported from northern California through Silverwood Reservoir (5 miles or 8 kilometres upstream from The Forks) downstream to the Barstow area. The imported water would be used to replenish aquifers underlying the Barstow area. A mathematical model was developed that simulates the advance of discharge down the initially dry channel of the Mojave River, and the model was used to evaluate the potential of the channel to move imported water downstream to Barstow.

Results of simulation by modeling indicate that the channel of the Mojave River can be used to efficiently convey imported water to Barstow only when the absorption capacity of the channel has been reduced by an antecedent flood. The volume of imported water that can reach Barstow depends on the volume and duration of the antecedent flood, on the volume of imported water released trom Silverwood Reservoir, and on the rate at which imported water is released. A release of 20,000 acre-feet (24.6 cubic hectometres) of imported water may produce at Barstow a maximum volume of imported water of 2,500, 8,000, 11,000, or 15,000 acre-feet (3.08, 9.86, 13.6, or 18.4 cubic hectometres) for a release rate of 500, 750, 1,000, or 2,000 cubic feet per second (14.2, 21.2, 28.3, or 56.8 cubic metres per second).

For planning purposes in evaluating some of the hydraulic effects of recharge on the aquifer, a simulation of the aquifer near the Barstow area using an electrical analog model showed that a combination of no pumping and a yearly recharge of 5,000 acre-feet (6.17 cubic hectometres) for 10 years could raise ground-water levels at least 10 feet (3 metres) over an area of about 10 square miles (25 square kilometres). To obtain the water-level changes due to the combined effects of pumping and recharge, the above water-level changes should be superimposed on the separate effects of pumping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7417","usgsCitation":"Durbin, T.J., and Hardt, W.F., 1974, Hydrologic analysis of the Mojave River, California, using a mathematical model: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 74-17, v, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7417.","productDescription":"v, 50 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157467,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0017/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":358909,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1974/0017/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mojave River","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -117.42187500000001,\n 34.26289150646404\n ],\n [\n -117.00576782226562,\n 34.26289150646404\n ],\n [\n -117.00576782226562,\n 34.91521472314689\n ],\n [\n -117.42187500000001,\n 34.91521472314689\n ],\n [\n -117.42187500000001,\n 34.26289150646404\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db611900","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Durbin, Timothy J.","contributorId":63373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Durbin","given":"Timothy","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hardt, W. Results indicate that water quality in the 'natural' environment is generally very good. Streams draining hydrologic bench-mark basins generally contain low concentrations of dissolved constituents. Water collected at the hydrologic bench-mark stations was analyzed for the following minor metals: arsenic, barium, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, mercury, selenium, silver, and zinc. Of 642 analyses, about 65 percent of the observed concentrations were zero. Only three samples contained metals in excess of U.S. Public Health Service recommended drinking-water standards--two selenium concentrations and one cadmium concentration. A total of 213 samples were analyzed for 11 pesticidal compounds. Widespread but very low-level occurrence of pesticide residues in the 'natural' environment was found--about 30 percent of all samples contained low-level concentrations of pesticidal compounds. The DDT family of pesticides occurred most commonly, accounting for 75 percent of the detected occurrences. The highest observed concentration of DDT was 0.06 microgram per litre, well below the recommended maximum permissible in drinking water. Nitrate concentrations in the 'natural' environment generally varied from 0.2 to 0.5 milligram per litre. The average concentration of nitrate in many major streams is as much as 10 times greater. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area in the 'natural' environment for the various physical divisions in the United States has been shown to be an applicable tool for approximating 'natural' water quality. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area is applicable in all the physical divisions of the United States, except the Central Lowland province of the Interior Plains, the Great Plains province of the Interior Plains, and the Basin and Ridge province of the Intermontane Plateaus. The relationship between dissolved-solids concentration and discharge per unit area is least variable in the New England province and Blue Ridge province of the Appalachian Highlands. The dissolved-solids concentration versus discharge per unit area in the Central Lowland province of the Interior Plains is highly variable. A sample collected from the hydrologic bench-mark station at Bear Den Creek near Mandaree, N. Dak., contained 3,420 milligrams per litre dissolved solids. This high concentration in the 'natural' environment indicates that natural processes can be principal agents in modifying the environment and can cause degradation. Average annual runoff and rock type can be used as predictive tools to determine the maximum dissolved-solids concentration expected in the 'natural' environment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir460E","usgsCitation":"Biesecker, J.E., and Leifeste, D.K., 1974, Water quality of hydrologic bench marks; The unproven methods of disposal include (1) a very deep drill hole (30,000-50,000 ft or 9,140-15,240 m), (2) a matrix of (an array of multiple) drill holes (1,000-20,000 ft or 305-6,100 m), (3) a mined chamber (1,000-10,000 ft or 305-3,050 m), (4) a cavity with separate manmade structures (1,000-10,000 ft or 305-3,050 m), and (5) an exploded cavity (2,000-20,000 ft or 610-6,100 m) o \r\n\r\nThe geohydrologic investigation is made on the presumption that the concepts or methods of disposal are technically feasible. Field and laboratory experiments in the future may demonstrate whether or not any of the methods are practical and safe. All the conclusions drawn are tentative pending experimental confirmation. The investigation focuses principally on the geohydrologic possibilities of several methods of disposal in rocks other than salt. Disposal in mined chambers in salt is currently under field investigation, and this disposal method has been intensely investigated and evaluated by various workers under the sponsorship of the Atomic Energy Commission. \r\n\r\nOf the various geohydrologic factors that must be considered in the selection of optimum waste-disposal sites, the most important is hydrologic isolation to assure that the wastes will be safely contained within a small radius of the emplacement zone. To achieve this degree of hydrologic isolation, the host rock for the wastes must have very low permeability and the site must be virtually free of faults. In addition, the locality should be in (1) an area of low seismic risk where the possibility of large earthquakes rupturing the emplacement zone is very low, (2) where the possibility- of flooding by rise is very low, (3) where a possible return of glacial or pluvial climate will not cause potentially hazardous changes in surface- or ground-water regimens, and (4) where danger of exhumation by erosion is nil. The geographic location for an optimum site is one that is far removed from major drainages, lakes, and oceans, where population density is low, and where the topographic relief is gentle in order to avoid steep surface-water drainage gradients that would allow rapid distribution of contaminants in case of accident. \r\n\r\nThe most suitable medium for the unproven deep drill-hole, matrix-holes, and exploded-cavity methods appears to be crystalline rocks, either intrusive igneous or metamorphic because of their potentially low permeabilities and high mechanical strengths. Salt (either in thick beds or stable domes), tuff, and possibly shale appear to be suitable for mined chambers and cavities with separate manmade structures. Salt appears to be suitable because of its very low permeability, high thermal conductivity, and natural plasticity. Tuff and shale appear suitable because of their very low permeabilities and high ion-exchange capacities. Sedimentary rocks other than shale and volcanic rocks, exclusive of tuff, are considered to be generally unsuitable for waste emplacement because of their potentially high permeabilities. \r\n\r\nAreas that appear to satisfy most geohydrologic requirements for the deep drill hole and the matrix holes include principally (1) the stable continental interior where the sedimentary cover is thin or absent, (2) the shield area of the North-Central States, and (3) the metamorphic belt of Eastern United States--primarily the Piedmont. These areas are possibly suitable also for the exploded cavity and the mined chamber because the possibility of finding rock with very- permeability at depths from 1,000? feet (305? m) to 20,000 feet (6,100 m) appears to be high. \r\n\r\nThe Basin and Range province of Western United States, particula","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr74158","usgsCitation":"Ekren, E.B., Dinwiddie, G., Mytton, J., Thordarson, W., Weir, J.E., Hinrichs, E., and Schroder, L., 1974, Geologic and hydrologic considerations for various concepts of high-level radioactive waste disposal in conterminous United States: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-158, x, 219 p. :ill., maps; (229 p. - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr74158.","productDescription":"x, 219 p. :ill., maps; (229 p. - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144361,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0158/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41973,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0158/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41974,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0158/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41975,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1974/0158/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a81ff","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ekren, E. Much of the south-central part of the area consists of a till plain that ranges in altitude from 1,100 to 1,200 feet above mean sea level. This plain is bordered by end moraines that form ridges on the east, west, and south. The eastern moraine marks the maximum eastward extend of the Wisconsin glacier, rising to more than 1,300 feet above sea level and forming ridges 50 to 100 feet above the till plain. In the northwest, the end moraine ridges are less obvious but extend directly north across the Cannon River valley.
\n
The end moraine ridges were cut by glacial melt water, which also deepened the pre-existing Cannon River valley. This deeply incised valley captures some of the streams that flow westward off the end moraines.
\n
East of the end moraines, pre-Wisconsin age glacial deposits are relatively thin and deeply weathered and eroded.
\n
Lard glacial melt-water valleys, around Cannon Falls and extending several miles to the west and south west, are characterized by broad valley floors underlain by outwash sand and gravel. The Cannon River flows out of the watershed and enters the Mississippi River at about 660 feet altitude.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Mounds The model was calibrated by using observed rainfall and runoff data from 19 storms in six basins having various degrees of urbanization. The calibrated models were used with a 57- year rainfall record to simulate 57-year records of annual peak discharges in 14 basins. The flood-frequency characteristics were defined by fitting the simulated 57-year records to log-Pearson Type III distributions.
\n
Regional peak-discharge equations, which can be used to determine the maximum rates of discharge that could be expected to be equaled or exceeded on the average of once in 1.25, 2, 5, 10, 25, and 100 years, were derived from multiple-regression analyses. The relationships among flood frequency, drainage area, and a coefficient of impervious area are given in a nomograph.
\n
The analyses indicate that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks will be 1.2 to 1.4 times those from an undeveloped area; and the annual direct runoff will be about double that from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine the increase in runoff from a highly industrialized area where the effective imperviousness approaches 100 percent.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7360","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the city of Dallas","usgsCitation":"Dempster, G.R., 1974, Effects of urbanization on floods in the Dallas, Texas metropolitan area: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 73-60, iv, 51 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7360.","productDescription":"iv, 51 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":258751,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0060/report.pdf","size":"3424","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258752,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1973/0060/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624dee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dempster, George R. It flows southward across gently rolling glacial terrain in which the major relief is near the river. Near the southern boundary of the watershed, the Snake River turns eastward to its confluence with the St. Croix River. Monitoring studies have indicated that tritium and chloride have dispersed over a 15-square mile (39-square kilometer) area of the aquifer in low but detectable concentrations and have only migrated as far as 5 miles (8 kilometers) downgradient from discharge points. The movement of cationic waste solutes, particularly <sup>90</sup>Sr and <sup>137</sup>Cs, has been significantly retarded due to sorption phenomena, principally ion exchange. <sup>137</sup>Cs has shown no detectable migration in the aquifer and <sup>90</sup>Sr has migrated only about 1.5 miles (2 kilometers) from the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP) discharge well, and is detectable over an area of only 1.5 square miles ( 4 square kilometers) of the aquifer. Digital modeling techniques have been applied successfully to the analysis of the complex waste-transport system by utilizing numerical solution of the coupled equations of groundwater motion and mass transport. The model includes the effects of convective transport, flow divergence, two-dimensional hydraulic dispersion, radioactive decay, and reversible linear sorption. The hydraulic phase of the model uses the iterative, alternating direction, implicit finite-difference scheme to solve the groundwater flow equations, while the waste-transport phase uses a modified method of characteristics to solve the solute transport equations simulated by the model. The modeling results indicate that hydraulic dispersion (especially transverse) is a much more significant influence than previously suggested by earlier studies. The model has been used to estimate future waste migration patterns for varied assumed hydrological and waste conditions up through the year 2000. The hydraulic effects of recharge from the Big Lost River have an important (but not predominant) influence on the simulated future migration patterns. For the assumed conditions, the model indicates that detectable concentrations of waste chloride and tritium could move as much as 15 miles (24 kilometers) downgradient from the original discharge points by the year 2000. However, the model shows <sup>90</sup>Sr moving only 2 to 3 miles (3 to 5 kilometers) downgradient in the same time. The model may also be used to estimate the effects of the various future waste disposal practices and hydrologic conditions on subsequent migration of waste products.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr741089","collaboration":"Work done in cooperation with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Robertson, J., 1974, Digital modeling of radioactive and chemical waste transport in the Snake River plain aquifer at the National Reactor Testing Station, Idaho: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 74-1089, vi, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr741089.","productDescription":"vi, 41 p.","startPage":"i","endPage":"41","numberOfPages":"47","costCenters":[{"id":634,"text":"Water Resources Program","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265807,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pbadupws.nrc.gov/docs/ML0609/ML060960424.pdf"},{"id":171187,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Snake River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,41.99 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.04,49.0 ], [ -111.04,41.99 ], [ -117.24,41.99 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65aa07","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robertson, J.B.","contributorId":85173,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robertson","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":237046,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

An analysis of conditions in the basin prior to large-scale ground-water development indicates that net recharge equaled 9.23 cubic feet per second and occurred as subsurface flow to the eastern part of the basin and infiltration of rain, direct runoff, and minor streamflows. Net predevelopment discharge equaled 9.23 cubic feet per second and occurred as aquifer discharge to the San Benito River. The 9.23 cubic feet per second of predevelopment recharge is considered to be perennial recharge to the basin.

Large-scale ground-water development occurred in the area during the period 1945-68 and caused water levels to decline throughout most of the basin. Progressive depletion of aquifer storage during this period changed the San Benito River from a gaining (perennial) stream to a losing stream along most of its reach in the basin area. Net discharge from the basin during the period 1945-68 averaged 18.10 cubic feet per second. Of this amount 17.82 cubic feet per second occurred as pumpage from wells, and
0.28 cubic foot per second occurred as basin discharge to the San Benito River. The potential for nutrient enrichment from natural sources is evaluated on the basis of the interactions of physical and hydrologic factors that play a role in controlling the trophic condition of lakes, such as: (1) mean depth, (2) volume, (3) bottom slope, (4) shoreline configuration ratio, (5) ratio of drainage area to volume, (6) altitude, and (7) water-renewal time. The potential for nutrient enrichment from cultural sources is evaluated on the basis of (1) total phosphorus loading from nonpoint sources and point sources, (2) volume of water per nearshore home, and (3) percentage of shore developed. Total phosphorus loading for the lakes is calculated using criteria based on phosphorus exports from various nonpoint sources in the lake basin. Indicators of eutrophication and water quality are evaluated from phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations, specific conductance, dissolved-oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion, Secchidisc visibility, fecal-doliform bacteria, and the abundance of rooted aquatic plants. The classification system, applied to seven Washington lakes, shows that a high enrichment potential from natural and (or) cultural factors is a good indicator of eutrophication and water-quality conditions for the lake.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7437","usgsCitation":"Bortleson, G.C., Dion, N.P., and McConnell, J.B., 1974, A method for the Additional drainage to the St. Croix River includes areas of about 2,500 square miles upstream in Minnesota and about 4,340 square miles in Wisconsin. At the southern tip of the watershed, the St. Croix joins the Mississippi River.
\n
Because part of the St. Croix River is deeply entrenched, topography in the watershed ranges from relatively rugged in highly dissected areas near the river to nearly flat in the west-central area.
\n
In the southern third of the watershed and along the St. Croix River, many outcrops of Ordovician, Cambrian, and Precambrian bedrock occur. The remainder of the watershed is covered by glacial deposits whose maximum thickness is about 400 feet.
\n
Much of the original forest cover, primarily hardwoods, has been removed; the largest concentrations remaining are long the St. Croix River and in the west-central area.
\n
The proximity of the watershed to the expanding Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area emphasizes the importance of defining water resources essential for future growth.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston,
