Hopper of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University listed 137 shocks (71 from 1774 to 1899, 66 from 1900 to 1970). Nuttli in the&nbsp;<i>Earthquake Information Bulletin,&nbsp;</i>March-April 1974). Earthquake activity continues in the area at present, showing that the seismic hazard is still there.</p>\n<p>We know little about the relationship between seismicity and the tectonic character of this region. The hypocenters of earthquakes are scattered. The near-surface features themselves are obscured by the several hundred feet alluvium and other quaternary sediments of the Mississippi embayment. No active faults have been mapped in the area.</p>\n<p>Supported by the U.S Geological Survey, my colleagues Mark Kramer, Gerard Fischer, Stephen Schaefer, Sean Morrissey, and I have recently established a microearthquake network in the New Madrid seismic zone. Seasonal changes in the female","docAbstract":"<p><span>A total of 161 blood samples collected from 77 white-tailed does (</span><i>Odocoileus virginianus borealis</i><span>) during the years 1971 through 1974 in Minnesota were utilized to make a preliminary characterization of the estrogen and progesterone levels in pregnant and nonpregnant animals. Progesterone and estrogen were measured by radioimmunoassay. Progesterone levels during the months of December through February were similar for pregnant and nonpregnant animals (3.98 ± 0.57 vs. 5.50 ± 0.82 ng/ml, x̄ ± S.E., N.S., t = 1.51). The pregnant animals had higher progesterone levels during the March through May period (4.61 ± 0.44 vs. 1.94 ± 0.85, P&lt;0.01). Progesterone levels during the months of June to early November, i.e., anestrus, were low and similar for lactating and nonlactating animals. Estrogen levels did not change during the year except for the period just before parturition in the pregnant does when estrogen levels were dramatically elevated (178 ± 29 pg/ml). Two nonpregnant adult does were sampled every 5 days from late January through early March. Progesterone levels exhibited a cyclic pattern of about 28 days duration. Estrogen levels showed no distinct pattern but tended to be inversely related to progesterone. These data suggest that 1) deer exhibit estrous cycles of about 25 to 30 days in length, 2) that estrous cycles recurred in nonpregnant does from November through early March, 3) that progesterone levels are similar for pregnancy and the luteal phase of the estrous cycle and 4) that late pregnancy is characterized by high estrogen levels as compared to early pregnancy and the estrous cycle.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford University Press","doi":"10.1095/biolreprod16.3.340","usgsCitation":"Plotka, E., Seal, U., Schmoller, G., Karns, P.D., and Keenlyne, K., 1977, Reproductive steroids in the white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis). The data also show that previously published conventional K-Ar ages on altered samples of tholeiite are too young by about 9 m.y.</p><p>These results remove a significant anomaly in the age-distance relationships of the Hawaiian chain and obviate the need for large changes in either the rate of rotation of the Pacific plate about the Hawaiian pole or the motion of the plate relative to the Hawaiian hot spot since the time of formation of the Hawaiian-Emperor bend. Experiments using ferric oxalate and cadmium(II) in HCl confirm excellent agreement with theory. Experimental peak heights and peak widths are found to be within 2% of calculated results. An example of trace analysis using square wave voltammetry at the DME is presented. The technique is shown to have the same order of sensitivity as differential pulse polarography but is much faster to perform. Techniques are described for searching, finding, and marking nests in a typical area of grassland.During nine nesting seasons, 7,894 nests representing 32 species were found by searching fields with cable-chain drags. Only 2% of the nests were damaged while searching; most of this damage was caused by the searcher or the vehicle, and not by the drag.The rate of nest abandonment caused by cable-chain searching was estimated to be less than 1%. Reflushing efficiency ranged from 25% for green-winged teal (Anas crecca) to 100% for shorebirds.
