Although some very minor occurrences are included to indicate the extent of distribution, those in which only trace amounts of tin have been found spectrographically or geochemically have been omitted. Unverifiable reported occurrences of tin-bearing minerals have been excluded also.

Known tin-bearing deposits in the conterminous United States are small, few in number, and widely scattered; only small amounts of tin concentrates are being recovered at the present time (1964). The total amount of metallic tin produced since 1950, mainly as a by-product of molybdenum ores, is less than 500 tons, and the total production from all sources prior to 1950 is similar.

Map locations are shown by symbols, the shapes of which denote different geologic types of occurrence; some areas of scattered occurrences in pegmatites are shown by a stippled pattern. Occurrences are numbered by State on the map and identified by number in the index. The index also gives the geographic coordinates, brief geologic descriptions, and references to the principal published reports. Sedimentary rocks in the area range from Pennsylvanian to Quaternary in age and from 2,000 to more than 6,000 feet in \r\nthickness. The strata were tilted to the northeast, and part of the Upper \r\nTriassic and all the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks were eroded away \r\nbefore strata of Late Cretaceous age were deposited. Basaltic lava flows and \r\ncinder cones, representing four general periods of eruption in late Miocene to \r\nQuaternary time, are widespread in the southern part of the area. \r\nPennsylvanian and Permian rocks overlie basement rocks of granite and \r\ndiorite and include the Supai Formation, the Coconino Sandstone, and the \r\nKaibab Limestone. The Supai Formation is 1,000 to 2,000 feet thick and consists of interbedded red and brown mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, limestone, \r\nand evaporites. It contains water of very poor quality outside Apache County. \r\nThe Coconino Sandstone is 200 to 250 feet thick and consists of light-gray \r\nfine- to medium-grained sandstone. It contains water suitable for domestic \r\nuse in the south and water unsuitable for most purposes in the north. The \r\nCoconino Sandstone underlies all Central Apache County in the subsurface. \r\nThe yellowish-gray to dark-gray Kaibab Limestone is present in the southern \r\ntwo-thirds of the area and is 0 to 350 feet thick. It contains water where it \r\nis fractured and combines with the Coconino Sandstone to form a single hydrologic unit that yields from 6 to 74 gpm (gallons per minute) of water per foot \r\nof drawdown. \r\n\r\nAn unconformity Heparates the Permian rocks from the overlying Triassic \r\nrocks, which comprise the Moenkopi and Chinle Formations and the Wingate \r\nSandstone. The Moenkopi Formation is 35 to 250 feet thick and consists of \r\nintercalated brownish-red siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. It contains \r\nsalty water in some areas but is dry in most. The Chinle Formation is 0 to 1,550 \r\nfeet thick and unconformably overlies the Moenkopi. The Chiule consists of \r\nmulticolored claystone, mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate. \r\nSome of the sandstone units yield small amounts of water, usually of a quality \r\nunsuitable for domestic use. The Wingate Sandstone is about 250 feet thick \r\nand is present only in the extreme northeastern corner of the area. It consists \r\nof intercalated, reddish-brown sandstone and siltstone and does not contain \r\nwater. \r\n\r\nThe Upper Cretaceous rocks comprise the Dakota Sandstone, from 50 to \r\n115 feet thick; the Mancos Shale, about 150 feet thick; and the Mesaverde Group, \r\nas much as 200 feet thick. These rocks consist of yellowish-gray, light-green, and reddish-brown sandstone and carbonaceous siltstone. Some of the sandstone units contain water of suitable quality for domestic use, and wells in these units yield from 10 to 1,000 gpm.\r\n\r\nSedimentary rocks of Eocene(?) age are about 800 feet thick and unconformably overlie Cretaceous rocks. They consist of light-brown and medium-red conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone. These sedimentary rocks contain small amounts of water suitable for domestic use and yield from 10 to 25 gpm in the Springerville area. The Datil Formation of Miocene(?) Tertiary age consists of more than 800 feet of sedimentary rocks, which are composed largely of volcanic fragments. The Datil Formation does not contain water in the one small area where it crops out.\r\n\r\nThe Bidahochi Formation of Pliocene age consists of 0 to 800 feet of white, green, and brown claystone, mudstone, and sandstone. Locally it yields from 10 to 50 gpm of water suitable for domestic use.\r\n\r\nQuaternary rocks consist of as much as 500 feet of alluvium, sand, gravel, travertine, cinders, and lava. The alluvium along the large drainages contains water that differs in quality from place to place. In most areas where it occurs, the lava ","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U. S. Govt. Print. In order of area affected, the States are Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Missouri. \r\n\r\nFive lives were lost, and the estimated damage was $14 million. Main-stem reservoirs kept Missouri River stages substantially below potential unregulated levels. Without regulation by reservoirs, the stage at Sioux City and Omaha would have been about 9 feet higher than it was and the damage would have been many millions of dollars more than actually occurred. \r\n\r\nThe floods were caused by rapid melting of an extensive snow cover of unusual depth and water equivalent, augmented by light to moderate rains. Temperatures almost continuously below normal, beginning in late December and culminating in record lows at many places during the first half of March, resulted in the retention of record snow accumulations, much later and much farther south than normal. The snowfall in eastern Nebraska from December 27 to March 26 was about twice the annual average. The excessive snowfall and below-normal temperatures produced a record-breaking 75-day period of continuous snow cover at Omaha. \r\n\r\nA rapidly rising, eastward-moving temperature pattern late in March, in combination with an easterly orientation of many Nebraska streams, tended to magnify flood peaks. The rapid temperature rise started about March 18 in western Nebraska but not until March 26 in the eastern part of the State. As a consequence, flood discharges from the headwaters, often bearing heavy ice floes, arrived in the lower reaches simultaneously with or even ahead of the breakup of the unusually heavy ice cover and caused serious jamming. Comparisons of the peak discharges of the 1960 snowmelt floods with those of previous floods reveal several interesting facts. Peak discharges on the Missouri main stem were appreciably less than those in several other years, largely because of effective reservoir control of upstream runoff, but, many tributaries throughout the report area had maximum discharges for their periods of record. Particularly significant are comparisons at some stations for which historical flood data were available. For example, the peak discharge of the Platte River at Louisville, Nebr., was the greatest since at least 1881, and the peak on the Elkhorn River at Waterloo, Nebr., was the greatest snowmelt flood since at least 1912, although it was less than half of the rain peak of June 12, 1944. \r\n\r\nFollowing a characteristic pattern for snowmelt floods, the peaks on the smaller streams generally were not unusual, but the cumulative effect of widespread high runoff throughout the stream systems caused higher and more outstanding peaks in the larger basins. Peaks due to local rains of high intensity often are more significant for small areas. \r\n\r\nSnowmelt floods occur less frequently than rainfall floods in most basins of this flood area.. Studies made for this report show that an average of only about one out of every four maximum annual flood discharges in the report area results primarily from snowmelt. But for streams flowing from north to south in South Dakota and Iowa, the ratio of snowmelt peaks to rainfall peaks is higher. \r\n\r\nComparisons of 1960 flood volumes with those for previous floods are even more striking than peak-discharge comparisons. Flood volumes at eight selected stations for the maximum 20-day period during March and April 1960 exceeded all previous 20-day volumes with only one exception; the ratios ranged from 3.11 for Vermillion River near Wakonda, S. Dak., to 0.93 for Elkhorn River at Waterloo, Nebr. The ratio of the 20-day volume to the 1960 annual runoff for the same group of stations ranged from 20 percent at Niobrara River near Spencer, Nebr., to 74 percent on the Vermillion River. Emergency measures were necessary during August 1962 to supplement the available supply. \r\n\r\nThe Green River is the largest potential source of water supply for Mammoth Cave. The 30-year minimum daily discharge is 40 mgd (million gallons per day) . The chemical quality is now good, but in the past the river has been contaminated by oil-field-brine wastes. By mixing it with water from the existing supply, Green River water could be diluted to provide water of satisfactory quality in the event of future brine pollution. \r\n\r\nThe Nolin River is the next largest potential source of water (minimum releases from Nolin Reservoir, 97-129 mgd). The quality is satisfactory, but use of this source would require a 8-mile pipeline. \r\n\r\nThe present water supply comes from springs draining a perched aquifer in the Haney Limestone Member of the Golconda Formation on Flint Ridge. Chemical quality is excellent but the minimum observed flow of all the springs on Flint Ridge plus Bransford well was only 121,700 gpd (gallons per day). This supply is adequate for present needs but not for future requirements; it could be augmented with water from the Green River. \r\n\r\nWet Prong Buffalo Creek is the best of several small-stream supplies in the vicinity of Mammoth Cave. Minimum flow of the creek is probably about 300,000 gpd and the quality is good. The supply is about 5 miles from Mammoth Cave. This supply also may be utilized for a future separate development in the northern part of the park. \r\n\r\nThe maximum recorded yield of wells drilled into the basal ground water in the Ste. Genevieve and St. Louis Limestone is 36 gpm (gallons per minute). Larger supplies may be developed if a large underground stream is struck. Quality can be expected to be good unless the well is drilled too far below the basal water table and intercepts poorer quality water at a lower level. This source of supply might be used to augment the present supply, but locating the trunk conduits might be difficult. \r\n\r\nWater in alluvium adjacent to the Green River and perched water in the Big Clifty Sandstone Member of the Golconda Formation and Girkin Formation have little potential as a water supply.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Hydrology of the Public Domain","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1475Q","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","usgsCitation":"Cushman, R., Krieger, R.A., and McCabe, J.A., 1965, Present and Future Water Supply for Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1475, Report: v, p. 601-647; Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1475Q.","productDescription":"Report: v, p. 601-647; Plates","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":137926,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1475q/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":12495,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/geology/publications/wsp/1475-Q/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26148,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1475q/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -86.25,37.083333333333336 ], [ -86.25,37.333333333333336 ], [ -86,37.333333333333336 ], [ -86,37.083333333333336 ], [ -86.25,37.083333333333336 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668d64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cushman, R.V.","contributorId":28220,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cushman","given":"R.V.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143408,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Krieger, R. At its north edge is the Milk River valley, which is underlain by Recent alluvium of the Milk River, glacial deposits, and alluvial deposits of the preglacial Missouri River, which carved and occupied this valley before the Pleistocene Epoch. Rising gently to the south is an undulating glaciated plain broken only by three small syenite porphyry intrusions. Underlying the glacial till of the plain are Upper Cretaceous shale and sandstone of the Bearpaw and Judith River Formations. At the south end of the reservation, 40 miles from the Milk River, an intrusion of syenite porphyry in Tertiary time uplifted, tilted, and exposed the succession of sedimentary rocks overlying the Precambrian metamorphic basement. The sedimentary rocks include 1,000 feet of sandstone and shale of Cambrian age; 2,000 feet of limestone and dolomite of Ordovician, Devonian, and Mississippian age; 400 feet of shale and limestone of Jurassic age; and 3,500 feet of sandstone, siltstone, and shale of Cretaceous age. Extensive gravel terraces of Tertiary and Quaternary age bevel the upturned bedrock formations exposed around the Little Rocky Mountains. \r\n\r\nGround water under water-table conditions is obtained at present from alluvium, glaciofluvial deposits, and the Judith River Formation. The water table ranges in depth from a few feet beneath the surface in the Milk River valley alluvium to more than 100 feet deep in the Judith River Formation. Yields to wells are generally low but adequate for domestic and stock-watering use. Quality of the water ranges from highly mineralized and unusable to excellent; many wells in the Milk River valley have been abandoned because of the alkalinity of their water. Potential sources of additional ground-water supplies are the alluvial gravel of creeks issuing from the Little Rocky Mountains and some extensive areas of terrace gravel. \r\n\r\nThe uplift and tilting of the sedimentary sequence around the Little Rocky Mountains and the minor intrusions in the central plain have created artesian conditions within aquifers. Wells obtain artesian water from sandstone aquifers in the Judith River, Eagle, and Kootenai Formations. Other potential aquifers, near their outcrop areas, are the Ellis Group and the Mission Canyon Limestone. \r\n\r\nMost wells that flow at the surface have small yields, but discharges of as much as 150 gallons per minute have been noted. Quality of artesian water ranges from poor to good. Well depths range from less than 50 to more than 300 feet.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"United States Government Printing Office,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1576F","usgsCitation":"Alverson, D.C., 1965, Geology and hydrology of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1576, iv, 59 p. :ill. ;24 cm. & 1 map in pocket., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1576F.","productDescription":"iv, 59 p. :ill. ;24 cm. & 1 map in pocket.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":109989,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24758.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"24758"},{"id":137217,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576f/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25425,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576f/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25426,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576f/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b32e4b07f02db6b468d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Alverson, Douglas C.","contributorId":68286,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Alverson","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Barite is found the world over and is abundant and widely distributed throughout the United States. The barite deposits of the United States (exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii) are shown on the accompanying map. The principal geologic type of deposit is indicated by the shape of symbol and the relative importance of the deposit is indicated by the size of symbol.

This text lists localities by State, and index numbers are keyed to the map. Localities are distinguished by name of mine, prospect, or geographic area; their coordinates are given to the nearest minute of latitude and longitude. Geologic relations of each occurrence, if known, are summarized briefly. The text and map were compiled from published and unpublished information, and at least one reference is given for each locality, if reports have been published. The listings in some States are preceded by a principal reference which is a major source of information about deposits in those States.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mr43","usgsCitation":"Brobst, D.A., 1965, Barite in the United States, exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Investigations Resource Map 43, Report: 10 p.; 1 Plate: 63.99 x 41.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mr43.","productDescription":"Report: 10 p.; 1 Plate: 63.99 x 41.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":180065,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/43/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":260469,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/43/plate-1.pdf"},{"id":485827,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/43/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"3168000","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -127.25,24.25 ], [ -127.25,49.25 ], [ -66.5,49.25 ], [ -66.5,24.25 ], [ -127.25,24.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649aab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Brobst, Donald Albert","contributorId":36117,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brobst","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"Albert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":266728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
