Organic arsenic-containing compounds are decomposed by either ultraviolet radiation or by suHurlc acid-potassium persulfate digestion. The arsenic liberated, with Inorganic arsenic originally present, is reduced to arsine with sodium borohydrlde. The arable Is stripped from the solution with the aid of nitrogen and Is then decomposed In a tube furnace heated to 800 0176C which Is placed in the optical path of an atomic absorption spectrometer. Thirty samples per hour can be analyzed to levels of 1 μg arsenic per liter.
","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac50019a035","usgsCitation":"Fishman, M., and Spencer, R., 1977, Automated atomic absorption spectrometric determination of total arsenic in water and streambed materials: Analytical Chemistry, v. 49, no. 11, p. 1599-1602, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac50019a035.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1599","endPage":"1602","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219658,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"49","issue":"11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059eef2e4b0c8380cd4a05c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, M.","contributorId":52323,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fishman","given":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357412,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Spencer, Roberto","contributorId":303001,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spencer","given":"Roberto","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":866168,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Te content of rocks is given for five mining districts in the western United States: Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Robinson, near Ely, Nevada; Montezuma, Colorado; Crater Creek area, Colorado; Cripple Creek, Colorado. Many of the analyses were obtained by use of a new analytical method sensitive to 0.001 ppm Te.

The principal ore deposits in the Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho, are Pb-Zn-Ag replacement veins in Precambrian rocks of the Belt Supergroup. Te dispersion patterns show the outlines of the original mineral belts, the effects of intrusive events, the location of ore deposits, the displacements caused by post-ore faulting, and the borders of the 780-km2 district.

The disseminated porphyry Cu deposits of the Robinson mining district, Nevada, are associated with Cretaceous quartz monzonite stocks that have intruded Palaeozoic carbonate rocks. Te is present in rock samples in concentrations as high as 10,000 ppm and forms a halo around the areas containing the Cu deposits. The alteration zones in the porphyry Mo district near Montezuma, Colorado, are developed around several small Tertiary intrusions occurring along a regional shear zone. Te haloes reflect the locations of porphyry intrusives, individual deposits and their ore shoots, and the pattern and intensity of adjacent alteration. The Te content of soils over the Montezuma stock is higher than, and varies independently from, the Te content of adjacent outcrops. Soils generally contain more Te than adjacent outcropping rocks. Soil may collect gaseous Te compounds from mineral deposits.

The Crater Creek area is a northwestern extension of the Summitville mining district, Colorado. Te dispersion patterns radiate out from exposed Cu-Pb-Zn veins, from an outcrop of molybdenite stockwork veins and from associated iron-stained altered rock. Te haloes intensify exponentially with proximity to known ore and suggest the presence of Summitville-type chimney deposits. Most of the gold- and silver-telluride ore in the Cripple Creek district, Colorado, is found in fracture fillings within a volcanic subsidence basin. Haloes of Au, Ag and Te all define the mineralized portions of the fissure veins.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0375-6742(77)90042-5","issn":"03756742","usgsCitation":"Watterson, J., Gott, G.B., Neuerburg, G.J., Lakin, H.W., and Cathrall, J.B., 1977, Tellurium, a guide to mineral deposits: Journal of Geochemical Exploration, v. 8, no. 1-2, p. 31-48, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6742(77)90042-5.","productDescription":"18 p.","startPage":"31","endPage":"48","numberOfPages":"18","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218765,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"8","issue":"1-2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505ba4b3e4b08c986b320509","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Watterson, J.R.","contributorId":102890,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watterson","given":"J.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357459,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gott, G. When such vesicles are pierced in liquid under standard conditions, the volume expansion of the gas is 0.2 ?? 0.05 times the eruption pressure in bars or 20 ?? 5 times the eruption depth in km. Such expansion could be used as a measure of eruption depth. A variety of techniques: (1) vacuum crushing and gas chromatographic, freezing separation, and mass spectrographic analyses; (2) measurements of phase changes on a freezing microscope stage; (3) microscopic chemical and solubility observations; and (4) volume change measurements, all indicate that CO2 comprises more than 95% by volume of the vesicle gas in several submarine basalt samples from the Atlantic and Pacific. The CO2 held in vesicles is present in quantities about equal to or greater than that presumed to be dissolved in the glass (melt) and amounts to 400-900 ppm of the rock. The rigid temperature of the glass is 800-1000??C and increases for shallower samples. A sulfur gas was originally present in subordinate amounts in the vesicles, but has largely reacted with iron in the vesicle walls to produce sulfide spherules. ?? 1977.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Moore, J., Batchelder, J.N., and Cunningham, C.G., 1977, CO2-filled vesicles in mid-ocean basalt: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 2, no. 4, p. 309-327.","startPage":"309","endPage":"327","numberOfPages":"19","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218689,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"2","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f2d5e4b0c8380cd4b3fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, J.G.","contributorId":67496,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"J.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357448,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Batchelder, J. Although sections of over a meter of solid rock were encountered in the borehole, there was significant fracturing with interstitial water leading to a substantial variation of water with depth in the borehole. The linear-correlation coefficients calculated for the peak intensities of several elements compared to the chemical core analyses were generally poor throughout the depth investigated. The data suggest and arguments are given which indicate that the variation of the thermal-to-intermediate-to-fast neutron flux density as a function of borehole depth is a serious source of error and is a major cause of the changes observed in the capture gamma-ray peak intensities. These variations in neutron energy may also cause a shift in the observed capture gamma-ray energy.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Geoexploration","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/0016-7142(77)90018-7","issn":"00167142","usgsCitation":"Senftle, F.E., Moxham, R., Tanner, A., Philbin, P.W., Boynton, G.R., and Wager, R., 1977, Importance of neutron energy distribution in borehole activation analysis in relatively dry, low-porosity rocks: Geoexploration, v. 15, no. 2, p. 121-135, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7142(77)90018-7.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"121","endPage":"135","costCenters":[{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":219044,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":265703,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0016-7142(77)90018-7"}],"volume":"15","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a393ee4b0c8380cd61866","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Senftle, F. Such a model includes two probabilistic components, the first reflecting the association between a geologic condition (structural closure, for example) and the occurrence of oil, and the second reflecting the uncertainty associated with the estimation of geologic variables in areas of limited control. Estimates of the conditional relationship between geologic variables and subsequent production can be found by analyzing the exploration history of a \"training area\" judged to be geologically similar to the exploration area. The geologic variables are assessed over the training area using an historical subset of the available data, whose density corresponds to the present control density in the exploration area. The success or failure of wells drilled in the training area subsequent to the time corresponding to the historical subset provides empirical estimates of the probability of success conditional upon geology. Uncertainty in perception of geological conditions may be estimated from the distribution of errors made in geologic assessment using the historical subset of control wells. These errors may be expressed as a linear function of distance from available control. Alternatively, the uncertainty may be found by calculating the semivariogram of the geologic variables used in the analysis: the two procedures will yield approximately equivalent results. The empirical probability functions may then be transferred to the exploration area and used to estimate the likelihood of success of specific exploration plays. These estimates will reflect both the conditional relationship between the geological variables used to guide exploration and the uncertainty resulting from lack of control. The cores reveal 4 stages of development: (1) subaerial exposure of a Pleistocene \"high\" having about 8 meters of relief, possibly a Pleistocene patch reef; (2) deposition of peat and impermeable terrigenous clay 3 meters thick around the high; (3) initiation of carbonate sediment production by corals and algae on the remaining 5 meters of hard Pleistocene topography and carbonate mud on the surrounding terrigenous clay; and (4) accelerated organic accumulation on the patch reef. Estimates of patch reef sedimentation rates (1.6 m/1000 years) are 3 to 4 times greater than off-reef sedimentation rates (0.4-0.5 m/1000 years). During periods of Pleistocene sedimentation on the Belize shelf, lagoon patch reefs may have grown above one another, stacking up to form reef accumulation of considerable thickness.
","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings: Third International Coral Reef Symposium","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"conferenceTitle":"Third International Coral Reef Symposium","conferenceDate":"May, 1977","conferenceLocation":"Miami, FL","language":"English","publisher":"Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science","publisherLocation":"Miami, FL","usgsCitation":"Halley, R.B., Shinn, E., Hudson, J., and Lidz, B., 1977, Recent and relict topography of Boo Bee patch reef, Belize, in Proceedings: Third International Coral Reef Symposium, v. 2, Miami, FL, May, 1977, p. 29-35.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"29","endPage":"35","numberOfPages":"7","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":292881,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Belize","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89.2276,15.8856 ], [ -89.2276,18.4959 ], [ -87.4917,18.4959 ], [ -87.4917,15.8856 ], [ -89.2276,15.8856 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53f85985e4b03f038c5c18c4","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Taylor, D.L.","contributorId":50676,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Taylor","given":"D.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509958,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Halley, R. Nuttli in the Earthquake Information Bulletin, March-April 1974). Earthquake activity continues in the area at present, showing that the seismic hazard is still there.
\n
We know little about the relationship between seismicity and the tectonic character of this region. The hypocenters of earthquakes are scattered. The near-surface features themselves are obscured by the several hundred feet alluvium and other quaternary sediments of the Mississippi embayment. No active faults have been mapped in the area.
\n
Supported by the U.S Geological Survey, my colleagues Mark Kramer, Gerard Fischer, Stephen Schaefer, Sean Morrissey, and I have recently established a microearthquake network in the New Madrid seismic zone. The network has been in operation for only 21 months, yet we have already been able to show, from the hypocenters located so far, that earthquakes in this region occur along linear zones, which we believe corespond to seismically active faults.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Stauder, W., 1977, Microearthquake--array studies of the seismicity in Southeast Missouri: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 9, no. 1, p. 8-13.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"8","endPage":"13","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":316625,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.977783203125,\n              36.4566360115962\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.01074218749999,\n              37.71859032558816\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.198486328125,\n              37.76202988573211\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.374267578125,\n              35.951329861522666\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.3515625,\n              35.98689628443789\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.3076171875,\n              36.08462129606931\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.098876953125,\n              36.31512514748051\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.164794921875,\n              36.48314061639213\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.867919921875,\n              36.491973470593685\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.977783203125,\n              36.4566360115962\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56b5d646e4b0cc7999817360","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stauder, W.","contributorId":156345,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stauder","given":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":597518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
