The gravel component is quantitatively minor and is concentrated mainly in the southern sector; it consists, for the most part, of relict biogenic detritus dominated by molluscan shells. The sand component consists of terrigenous and biogenic detritus. Modern sand is localized along the shoreface sector, whereas palimpsest and relict sands characterize the northern and southern sectors, which are the respective locations of the ancestral Brazos-Colorado 'and Rio Grande deltas. The central sector contains an extensive modern mud blanket that appears to be migrating southward over relict deposits of the ancestral Rio Grande delta. The silt fraction is the highly dominant component of the mud blanket; silt appears to be hydraulically trapped within the shelf environment and constitutes the most abundant detrital component within the Outer Continental Shelf region. The subordinate clay component of the mud blanket is concentrated toward the shelf break and may be largely escaping into deeper water environments.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Shideler, G.L., 1976, Textural distribution of sea-floor sediments, south Texas Outer Continental Shelf: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 6, p. 703-713.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"703","endPage":"713","costCenters":[{"id":186,"text":"Coastal and Marine Geology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266234,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266227,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue6/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"20.3 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Texas Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -97.72,25.84 ], [ -97.72,30.0 ], [ -93.52,30.0 ], [ -93.52,25.84 ], [ -97.72,25.84 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"4","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50ffc323e4b0ca65fed0d2b1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shideler, Gerald L.","contributorId":89137,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shideler","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472134,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The material was compared chemically, spectometrically, and chromatographically with oils from four fields in the nearby Paradox basin. Each of these oil fields contains reservoir rocks equivalent to rock units known to extend beneath volcanic rocks near the mine. Carbon and sulfur isotope data and gas chromatographic data indicate a similarity between the oil from the nearby Sierra field and the oil from the mine. Thus, it seems both geologically and chemically possible that oil in the mine originated in Cretaceous sediments. Continuity requires that the viscous underlying material rise beneath spreading centers and accrete onto the steadily diverging plates. It is likely that during the rise the viscosity changes systematically and that the viscous tractions exerted on the plates contribute to the unique pattern of submarine mountains and earthquake faults observed at spreading centers. The process is modeled by viscous creep in a wedge-shaped conduit (with apex at the sea floor) in which the viscosity varies as <i>r<sup>m</sup></i> where <i>r</i> is distance from the apex and <i>m</i> is a parameter. For these conditions, the governing differential equations take a simple form. The solution for the velocity is independent of <i>r</i> and of the sign of <i>m</i>. As viscous stresses vary as <i>r<sup>m-1</sup></i>, the pattern of stress on the conduit wall is sensitive to viscosity variation. For negative <i>m</i>, the viscous pressure along the base of the conduit is quite uniform; for positive <i>m</i>, it falls toward zero in the axial region as the conduit base widens. For small opening angles, viscous forces push the plates apart, and for large ones, they oppose plate separation. Though highly idealized, the solution provides a tool for investigating tectonic processes at spreading centers.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Lachenbruch, A.H., and Nathenson, M., 1976, Rise of a variable-viscosity fluid in a steadily spreading wedge-shaped conduit with accreting walls: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 2, p. 181-188.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"181","endPage":"188","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266647,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266646,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue2/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"volume":"4","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5108fd91e4b0d965cd9f237e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lachenbruch, Arthur H.","contributorId":27850,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lachenbruch","given":"Arthur","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472580,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nathenson, Manuel 0000-0002-5216-984X mnathnsn@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5216-984X","contributorId":1358,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nathenson","given":"Manuel","email":"mnathnsn@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":472579,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The DCP's transmitted 3260 messages comprising 26,080 ambient, surface, and near-surface temperature records at an accuracy of ±1.15 &deg;C for 1121 instrument days between November 14, 1972 and April 17, 1974. In harsh, windy, high-altitude volcanic environments the DCP functioned best with a small dipole antenna. Sixteen kg of alkaline batteries provided a viable power supply for the DCP systems, operated at a low-duty cycle, for 5 to 8 months. A proposed solar power supply system would lengthen the period of unattended operation of the system considerably. Special methods of data handling such as data storage via a proposed memory system would increase the significance of the twice-daily data reception enabling the DCP's to record full diurnal-temperature cycles at volcanic or geothermal sites. Refinements in the temperature-monitoring system designed and operated in experiment SR 251 included a backup system consisting of a multipoint temperature scanner, a servo mechanism and an analog-to-digital recorder. Improvements were made in temperature-probe design and in construction of corrosion-resistant seals by use of a hydrofluoric-acid-etching technique.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Thermal surveillance of active volcanoes using the Landsat-1 Data Collection System","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":6,"text":"USGS Unnumbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70043109","usgsCitation":"Preble, D.M., Friedman, J.D., and Frank, D., 1976, Electronic thermal sensor and Data Collection Platform technology: Part 5 in <i>Thermal surveillance of active volcanoes using the Landsat-1 Data Collection System</i>: Final Report, 64 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70043109.","productDescription":"64 p.","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266996,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5112382ce4b0ebe69d7eb6ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Preble, Duane M.","contributorId":36560,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Preble","given":"Duane","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Friedman, Jules D.","contributorId":79464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friedman","given":"Jules","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472978,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Frank, David","contributorId":13969,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Frank","given":"David","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The uncertainties of interpretation are particularly great in glaciated terrain because our understanding of both glacial processes and history is so incomplete, a fact well illustrated in Beacon Hill. Recent construction activities in the eastern part of the hill, until now classified as a drumlin, have shown that it is better interpreted as an end moraine formed by a Wisconsonian glacial readvance. Instead of the firm till that was anticipated as foundation material, excavations exposed a complex of sand, gravel, and clay, with only minor zones of till. The structure of these deposits strongly suggests that originally they were plates of the glacial bed that froze to the glacier and were transported englacially. Thrust faulting and other deformations are glacial structures formed within the ice in the glacier's terminal zone. In spite of the complex englacial history, these deposits lost little of their original appearance and intergranular relationships. Upon deglaciation, the frozen moraine thawed, and slumping formed complex secondary structures on the ridge's lower flanks.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Urban Gomorphology (Geological Society of America, Special Paper 174)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","publisherLocation":"Boulder, CO","usgsCitation":"Kaye, C., 1976, Beacon Hill end moraine, Boston: new explanation of an important urban feature, chap. <i>of</i> Urban Gomorphology (Geological Society of America, Special Paper 174), v. 174, p. 7-20.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"7","endPage":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":267360,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","city":"Boston","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -71.1911,42.2279 ], [ -71.1911,42.3989 ], [ -70.9232,42.3989 ], [ -70.9232,42.2279 ], [ -71.1911,42.2279 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"174","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"511cc3f7e4b0f79c4d2cebc8","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Coates, Donald R.","contributorId":111569,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Coates","given":"Donald","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":509212,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1}],"authors":[{"text":"Kaye, Clifford A.","contributorId":17624,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kaye","given":"Clifford A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":473735,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The source of the saline water generally is oil-field brine that leaked from disposal ponds on the land surface. Locally, pollution by saline water also has been caused by upwelling of oil-field brine injected under pressure into the \"lost-circulation zone\" of the Lower Permian Wellington Formation and, possibly, by leakage of brine from corroded or improperly cased disposal wells. Anomalously high concentrations of chloride ion in some reaches of the Little Arkansas River probably can be attributed to pollution by municipal wastes rather than from inflow of saline ground water. Hydraulic connection exists between the \"lost-circulation zone\" and unconsolidated deposits, as evidenced by the continuing development of sinkholes, by the continuing discharge of saline water through springs and seeps along the Arkansas River south of the Little Arkansas River basin and by changes in the chloride concentration in water pumped from wells in the \"lost-circulation zone.\" The hydraulic head in the \"lost-circulation zone\" is below the base of the unconsolidated deposits, and much below the potentiometric surface of the aquifer in those deposits. Any movement of water, therefore, would be downward from the \"fresh-water\" aquifer to the saline \"lost-circulation zone.\"","language":"English","publisher":"University of Kansas Publications","publisherLocation":"Lawrence, KS","collaboration":"Prepared cooperatively by the Kansas Geological Survey and the U.S. Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Leonard, R., and Kleinschmidt, M.K., 1976, Saline water in the Little Arkansas River Basin area, south-central Kansas: Chemical Quality Series 3, iii, 24 p.; ill.; maps.","productDescription":"iii, 24 p.; ill.; maps","startPage":"i","endPage":"24","numberOfPages":"28","costCenters":[{"id":353,"text":"Kansas Water Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265515,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.kgs.ku.edu/Publications/Bulletins/CQS3/cqs3.pdf"},{"id":265516,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Kansas","otherGeospatial":"Little Arkansas River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -102.05,37.0 ], [ -102.05,40.0 ], [ -94.59,40.0 ], [ -94.59,37.0 ], [ -102.05,37.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd714ae4b0b29085107974","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leonard, Robert B.","contributorId":14407,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leonard","given":"Robert B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471676,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kleinschmidt, Melvin K.","contributorId":32793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kleinschmidt","given":"Melvin","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471677,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Pleistocene alluvium and Miocene-Pliocene tuffaceous sediments, conglomerate, and felsic volcanic rocks aggregate 2 km in thickness. Large gravity, magnetic, and total field resistivity highs probably indicate a buried igneous mass that is too old to serve as a heat source. Differing seismic velocities relate to known or inferred structures and to a suspected shallow zone of warm water. Resistivity anomalies reflect differences of both composition and degree of alteration of Cenozoic rocks. Resistivity soundings show a 2 to 5 ohm·m unit with a thickness of 1 km beneath a large part of the valley, and the unit may indicate partly hot water and partly clayey sediments. Observed self-potential anomalies are believed to indicate zones where warm water rises toward the surface. Boiling wells at Bridge, Idaho are near the intersection of north-northeast normal faults which have moved as recently as the late (?) Pleistocene, and an east-northeast structure, probably a right-lateral fault. Deep circulation of ground water in this region of relatively high heat flow and upwelling along faults is the probable cause of the thermal anomaly.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings: second United Nations Symposium on the development and use of geothermal resources, San Francisco, California, USA, 20-29 May 1975","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":12,"text":"Conference publication"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Williams, P., Mabey, D.R., Zohdy, A.A., Ackermann, H.D., Hoover, D.B., Pierce, K.L., and Oriel, S.S., 1976, Geology and geophysics of the southern Raft River Valley geothermal area, Idaho, USA, <i>in</i> Proceedings: second United Nations Symposium on the development and use of geothermal resources, San Francisco, California, USA, 20-29 May 1975, v. 2, p. 1273-1282.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"1273","endPage":"1282","costCenters":[{"id":255,"text":"Energy Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265587,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Raft River Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,42.0 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.04,49.0 ], [ -111.04,42.0 ], [ -117.24,42.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50f293f4e4b0c9e41dd3ab73","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, Paul L.","contributorId":91086,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"Paul L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471858,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mabey, Don R.","contributorId":43741,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mabey","given":"Don","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471855,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Zohdy, Adel A. Stratigraphically, the continental slope–outer edge of the continental shelf is a transition zone of high-velocity sedimentary rock, probably carbonate, that covers deeply subsided basement.</p><p>Acoustically, the sedimentary sequence beneath the shelf is divided into three units which are correlated speculatively with the Cenozoic, the Cretaceous, and the Jurassic-Triassic sections. These units thicken offshore, and some have increased seismic velocities farther offshore. The uppermost unit thickens from a fraction of a kilometer to slightly more than a kilometer in a seaward direction, and velocity values range from 1.7 to 2.2 km/sec. The middle unit thickens from a fraction of a kilometer to as much as 5 km (northern Baltimore Canyon trough), and seismic velocity ranges from 2.2 to 5.4 km/sec. The lowest unit thickens to a maximum of 9 km (northern Baltimore Canyon), and velocities span the 3.9 to 5.9-km/sec interval.</p><p>The spatial separation of magnetic and gravity anomalies on line 2 (New Jersey) suggests that in the Baltimore Canyon region the magnetic-slope anomaly is due to edge effects and that the previously reported free-air and isostatic gravity anomalies over the outer shelf may be due in part to a lateral increase in sediment density (velocity) near the shelf edge. The East Coast magnetic anomaly and the free-air gravity high both coincide over the outer shelf edge on line 1 (Georges Bank) but are offset by 20 km from the ridge on the reflection profile. Because the magnetic-slope-anomaly wavelength is nearly 50 km across, a deep source is likely. In part, the positive free-air gravity anomaly likewise may represent the significant lateral density increase within the sedimentary section toward the outer edge of the shelf.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Association of Petroleum Geologists","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","doi":"10.1306/C1EA35E1-16C9-11D7-8645000102C1865D","usgsCitation":"Schlee, J., Behrendt, J.C., Grow, J., Robb, J.M., Mattick, R.E., Taylor, P.T., and Lawson, B.J., 1976, Regional geologic framework off northeastern United States: American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin, v. 60, no. 6, p. 926-951, https://doi.org/10.1306/C1EA35E1-16C9-11D7-8645000102C1865D.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"926","endPage":"951","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266431,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Atlantic Ocean","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74.57445495565841,\n              34.54201079036788\n            ],\n            [\n              -67.00870217573663,\n              32.68969202501184\n            ],\n            [\n              -64.4151885851629,\n              33.653394442107356\n            ],\n            [\n              -58.9581858826422,\n              40.6927360683957\n            ],\n            [\n              -68.50221203592804,\n              42.200234266771474\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.993156429557,\n              40.57584686002005\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.8834116106613,\n              39.16159111213017\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.18467319036125,\n              36.48592421852297\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.48849487074959,\n              34.39791504686983\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.57445495565841,\n              34.54201079036788\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"60","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51026629e4b0d4f5ea817c51","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schlee, John","contributorId":16078,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schlee","given":"John","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Behrendt, John C. jbehrendt@usgs.gov","contributorId":25945,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Behrendt","given":"John","email":"jbehrendt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":213,"text":"Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":218,"text":"Denver Federal Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":472334,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grow, John A.","contributorId":51739,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grow","given":"John A.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":472335,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Robb, James M.","contributorId":73272,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robb","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":678,"text":"Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":472338,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Mattick, Robert E.","contributorId":44130,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mattick","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472333,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Taylor, P. The known porphyry copper deposit at Saindak was used as a control area. Empirical maximum and minimum apparent reflectance limits were selected for each multispectral scanner band in each rock type classified, and a relatively unrefined classification table was prepared. Where the values for all four bands fitted within the limits designated for a particular class, a symbol for the presumed rock type was printed by the computer at the appropriate location; these symbols formed a classification map. Drainage channels, areas of mineralized quartz diorite, areas of pyrite-rich rock, and the approximate limit of propylitic alteration were very well delineated on the computer-generated map of the test area. The classification method was then used to evaluate 2,100 km<sup>2</sup> in the Mashki Chah region, east of the test area, and a partial check of the results was made in the field. The results of the experiment show that outcrops of hydrothermally altered and mineralized rock can be identified from Landsat-1 data under favorable conditions. The empirical method of digital computer classification of the multispectral scanner data was relatively unrefined and rapid. The five mineralized prospecting sites identified are in locations that I would not have selected as favorable on the basis of geologic knowledge or photogeologic interpretation at the time of the investigation.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Schmidt, R.G., 1976, Exploration for porphyry copper deposits in Pakistan using digital processing of Landsat-1 data: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 4, no. 1, p. 27-34.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"27","endPage":"34","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266418,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1976/vol4issue1/report.pdf","text":"report","size":"16.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":266419,"rank":2,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Pakistan","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 60.87,23.54 ], [ 60.87,37.06 ], [ 77.82,37.06 ], [ 77.82,23.54 ], [ 60.87,23.54 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"4","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51026611e4b0d4f5ea817bd9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schmidt, Robert G.","contributorId":19243,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schmidt","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472320,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Something to do with credit given for work done. We look at it in the unfortunate light of accountability; our days under the bushel of anonymity are over. Speaking of accountability, it's about time we gave some recognition to the Newsletter's unknowing progenitor, John Wright, of the British Directorate of Overseas Surveys. Editorially and stylistically, the NCIC Newsletter owes him a large debt. Last month we received a suggestion from a reader that the Newsletter begin consistently listing prices for new products. In the publishing business, however, there is an infallible law of inflation prices increase as soon as they appear in print. We do try to quote exact prices where possible, and as our reader suggested, ballpark figures when we have to. In nearly all cases, additional information is available either by contacting the addresses listed in the article or indexed in the back or by calling NCIC's User Services Section. Numerous bits and pieces of information make up the bulk of this issue. Among them are the possibility of the Geological Survey issuing readable indexes to available topographic maps, the development of an NCIC classification system for U.S. cartographic data, and information on the publication of prototype topographic-bathymetric maps. Lastly, here is our quarterly solicitation for suggestions, comments, criticism, notes, and information for publication. Call it your bicentennial contribution to participatory democracy.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/70039591","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1976, National Cartographic Information Center Newsletter No. 4: Newsletter 4, 12 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039591.","productDescription":"12 p.","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":409,"text":"National Cartographic Information Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":261115,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039591/report.pdf"},{"id":261116,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039591/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a619ce4b0c8380cd71a77","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535383,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Annual Report for 1975 consists of five parts: * The Year in Review - a review of the issues and events which affected Survey programs and highlights of program accomplishments. * Perspectives - several short papers which address major resource issues and summarize recent advances in the earth sciences. * A description of the Survey's budget, programs, and accomplishments. * A set of statistical tables and related information which documents program trends, workloads, and accomplishments. * A compendium of Survey publications and information services available to the public. One purpose of this report is to increase public awareness and understanding of the Geological Survey's programs and, more generally, of the role of earth sciences information in helping to resolve many of the natural resource conflicts that face our society now and in the years ahead. To be useful, however, information must be available and readily accessible to those responsible for natural resource policy at the time that the decisions are made. This report emphasizes the types of information products and services provided by the Survey and tells how to obtain additional information.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70039027","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1976, United States Geological Survey Annual Report, Fiscal Year 1975: Annual Report, vi, 194 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039027.","productDescription":"vi, 194 p.","numberOfPages":"203","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261263,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039027/report.pdf"},{"id":261264,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70039027/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 173,16.916666666666668 ], [ 173,71.83333333333333 ], [ -66.95,71.83333333333333 ], [ -66.95,16.916666666666668 ], [ 173,16.916666666666668 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bbc8ee4b08c986b328cdd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535198,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The following material discusses the impact of the 1973 volcanic eruption of Eldfell on the fishing port of Vestmannaeyjar on the island of Heimaey, Iceland. Before the eruption was over, approximately one-third of the town of Vestmannaeyjar had been obliterated but, more importantly, the potential damage had been reduced markedly by the spraying of seawater onto the advancing lava flows, causing them to be slowed, stopped, or diverted from the undamaged portion of the town. The Survey's interest and involvement in the Heimaey eruption in Iceland was occasioned by the possibility that the procedures used to control the course of the flowing lava and to reduce the damage in a modern town may some day be needed in Hawaii and possibly even in the continental United States. This publication is based on the observations of two USGS geologists, Richard S. Williams, Jr. and James G. Moore, as well as on information from the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Icelandic scientists' reports through the Center for Short-Lived Phenomena, and other published scientific reports. A number of Icelandic scientists studied the scientific aspects of the eruption and the engineering aspects of the control of lava flows, in particular, Professors Thorbjb'rn Sigurgeirsson and Sigurdur Thorarinsson of the University of Iceland Science Institute. Also, Icelandic governmental officials provided logistical and other support, in particular, Mr. Steingnmur Hermannsson, Director, Icelandic National Research Council and Professor Magnus Magnusson, Director, University of Iceland Science Institute.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/70039211","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs, The Center for Short-Lived Phenomena, the University of Iceland Science Institute, and the Icelandic National Research Council","usgsCitation":"Williams, R., and Moore, J., 1976, Man against volcano: The eruption on Heimaey, Vestmann Islands, Iceland: General Information Product, 19 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70039211.","productDescription":"19 p.","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261386,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039211/report.pdf"},{"id":261387,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/70039211/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Iceland","city":"Vestmannaeyjar","otherGeospatial":"Heimaey Island;Vestmann Islands;Eldfell","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -20.333333333333332,63.38333333333333 ], [ -20.333333333333332,63.5 ], [ -20.166666666666668,63.5 ], [ -20.166666666666668,63.38333333333333 ], [ -20.333333333333332,63.38333333333333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a4c5ae4b0c8380cd69bc6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, R.S.
