No mortality occurred, and the pathologic lesions usually associated with lead poisoning were not found. Changes in hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration did not occur. After 3 wk ducks fed 25 ppm lead exhibited a 40% inhibition of blood δ‐aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity that persisted through 12 wk exposure. After 12 wk treatment similar enzyme inhibition was present in the ducks fed 5 ppm lead. At 3 wk there was a small accumulation of lead (less than 1 ppm) in the liver and kidneys of ducks fed 25 ppm lead; no further increases occurred throughout the exposure. No significant accumulation of lead occurred in the tibiae or wing bones. Groups of ducks fed 5 and 25 ppm diets for 12 wk were placed on clean feed and examined through a 12 wk posttreatment period. After 3 wk on clean diet δ‐aminolevulinic acid dehydratase activity and lead concentrations in the blood had returned to pretreatment levels. Even though lead concentrations in the blood, soft organs, and bone were low, a highly significant negative correlation between blood lead and blood enzyme activity was obtained. The trend was interrupted by World War I, the economic depression of the 1930's, and World War II.  Data are lacking for the years after World War II until 1968.  Until 1942, domesticated canaries and a few species of game birds made up most of the avian imports; the shell parakeet or budgerigar was the most commonly imported parrot.  Although the total number ofbirds imported 1968-72 was-not greatly different from the pre-depression years, the proportion of canaries, game species, and parakeets declined greatly and the variety and number of cage birds including other parrot species greatly increased.  Until 1930 most mammals imported were for laboratory use or fur farming.  After 1930 the number of imported mammals increased with the growing importance of primates, especially rhesus macaques, in research.  Since 1968 the number of mammals irnported annually has been at least 5 times greater than the previous peak of 1938, and primates have made up 87% of mammalian imports.  Information on reptiles and amphibians imported into the United States is available only for 1970 and 1971.  Turtles were the most commonly imported reptiles, frogs and toads the most commonly imported amphibians.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Banks, R., 1976, Wildlife importation into the United States, 1900-1972: Special Scientific Report  - Wildlife 200, 18.","productDescription":"18","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":202744,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":91960,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027/mdp.39015077575069","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f01aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Banks, R.C.","contributorId":20440,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"R.C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":343805,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During the 1972-75 period, various types of aerial photographing equipment were evaluated to determine the problems and potentials for employing these techniques in appraisals of canvasback populations. The equipment and procedures available for automated analysis of aerial photographic imagery were also investigated. Serious technical problems remain to be resolved, but some promising results were obtained. Final conclusions about the feasibility of operational implementation await a more rigorous analysis of the data collected.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the Canvasback Workshop : April 6-7, 1976, Ramada Inn, Jamestown, North Dakota","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North Dakota Game and Fish Department","publisherLocation":"Bismark","collaboration":"Hosted by North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Chesapeake Bay population has averaged 33 percent of the North American population and 64 percent of the Atlantic Flyway population. In Maryland, significant annual fluctuations have been recorded between the eastern and western shore of Chesapeake Bay. In 1968, 11 percent of the Bay canvasbacks were on the western shore, whereas in 1971, 87 percent of the birds wintered in this area. This increase in 1971 is believed to be in response to large populations of small Rangia cuneata clams. I n recent years, mortality of small clams and reduced spawning have resulted in a larger size class for Rangia making them less desirable as a waterfowl food. Canvasback populations in 1975 and 1976 were more dispersed in Chesapeake Bay when the predominant food of canvasbacks was Macoma balthica. In the last 5 years, the number of canvasbacks wintering in Chesapeake Bay has declined slightly, while the North American and Atlantic Flyway populations have increased. Increases have been noted in New Jersey and North Carolina. This trend may indicate that the quality of canvasback habitat in Chesapeake Bay is declining at a faster rate than other areas along the Atlantic coast.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the Canvasback Workshop : April 6-7, 1976, Ramada Inn, Jamestown, North Dakota","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North Dakota Game and Fish Department","publisherLocation":"Bismark","collaboration":"Hosted by North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The purpose of the studies were to determine if the levels of toxic chemicals found in canvasbacks were of the magnitude to cause problems affecting reproduction and survival. Overall, levels of organochlorine pesticides and PCB's were low in canvasbacks and their eggs. Some individual birds, however, laid eggs with elevated residues of DDE (12.1 ppm) or PCB's (28.6 ppm). There was no significant difference between eggshell thicknesses of 1972-73 and pre-1946 collections. About 12% of the canvasbacks analyzed had elevated levels of blood lead with reduced ALAD enzyme activity. Adult canvasbacks collected from the Chesapeake Bay in 1975 had moderate to high levels of cadmium in their kidneys. Cadmium, in excessive amounts is very toxic and can curtail spermatogenesis in male birds. Although no single toxic chemical found in wild canvasbacks appears to be a major factor in population declines, the cumulative effects of sublethal levels of all the pollutants may render birds susceptible to disease, hunting pressure or predation.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the Canvasback Workshop : April 6-7, 1976, Ramada Inn, Jamestown, North Dakota","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"North Dakota Game and Fish Department","publisherLocation":"Bismark","collaboration":"Hosted by North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
