The increases in concentration of the several chemical components are not proportional. This phenomenon appears to be caused largely by simple solution, which is closely related to the chemical character of the geologic formation that provides the reservoir site and the earth fill of the dam. Concentration of certain chemical components in the seepage water progressively decreases as the structure ages. This is probably a function of depletion, which is related to the amounts and solubility of the parent materials subjected to solution. In contrast, the concentration of certain other components, such as iron and calcium, increases with time. The chemical activities within the accumulating mud on the bottom of the reservoir apparently cause these increases.
This investigation is part of a statewide program to determine the location, extent, and hydrologic characteristics of the ground-water reservoirs (aquifers).
The investigation was made cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey, North Dakota State Water Commission, North Dakota Geological Survey, and Griggs and Steele Counties Water Management Districts.
This preliminary map is the first product of an intensive study of Griggs and Steele Counties. A well inventory provided data on depth, construction, and productivity of private and public wells. Test drilling by the North Dakota State Water Commission, Federal agencies, and commercial well drillers provided information regarding the thickness, grain size, and extent of the aquifers. Potential well yields were estimated from the thickness and hydraulic conductivity of the water-bearing materials logged at each test hole, and from aquifer tests. Generally, the yield of a well is proportional to the hydraulic conductivity and thickness of the aquifer.

Preliminary plans call for the construction of a county-owned sanitary sewage treatment plant and several 3,000-foot deep injection wells at 1,000-foot intervals on Levee 31E. As a first stage, drilling of seven wells, capable of accepting, in the aggregate, 30 mgd (million gallons per day) of treated liquid waste, is planned. The locations of the proposed sites (fig. 1) were selected by the consultants for the Authority.
A reconnaissance was made in the vicinity of the proposed well sites to determine the chloride content of surface and ground water because this information is needed to formulate plans for the safe disposal of salt water during drilling and testing of the injection wells. The reconnaissance was part of a cooperative program with the Dade County Water and Sewer Authority to investigate the hydrologic effects of injecting treated waste water into a deep-saline aquifer.
The area of investigation is near Cutler Ridge in southeast Dade County. It occupies about 51/2 square miles bounded on the east by S.W. 77th Avenue extended, on the west by S.W. 97th Avenue, on the south by Coconut Palm Drive, and on the north by Old Cutler Road (fig. 1). The area for the investigation was selected by the Authority and their consultants.

This report, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights, is the twelfth in a series of reports that describe the water resources of the western basins of Utah. At some locations, predominantly sedimentary deposits were penetrated; at others, basalt flows predominated. The so-called Mud Lake-Market Lake barrier denotes a change in geology. From the vicinity of the barrier area, as described by Stearns, Crandall, and Steward (1938, p. 111), up the water-table gradient for at least a few tens of miles, the saturated geologic section consists predominantly of beds of sediments that are intercalated with numerous basalt flows. Downgradient from the barrier, sedimentary deposits are not common and practically all the water-bearing formations are basalt, at least to the depths explored so far. Thus, the barrier is a transition zone from a sedimentary-basaltic sequence to a basaltic sequence. The sedimentary-basaltic sequence forms a complex hydrologic system in which water occurs under water-table conditions in the upper few tens of feet of saturated material and under artesian conditions in the deeper material in the southwest part of the region. The well data indicate that southwest of the barrier, artesian pressures are not significant. Southwest of the barrier, few sedimentary deposits occur in the basalt section and, as described by Mundorff, Crosthwaite, and Kilburn (1964). ground water occurs in a manner typical of the Snake Plain aquifer. In several wells, artesian pressures are higher in the deeper formations than in the shallower ones, but the reverse was found in a few wells. The available data are not adequate to describe the water-bearing characteristics of the artesian aquifer nor the effects that pumping in one zone would have on adjacent zones. About 90 percent of the area drains south to the Ouachita River in Louisiana. The alluvial aquifer and the streams are hydraulically connected and are studied as an aquifer-stream system. Bayou Bartholomew is a principal stream of the system. The aquifer is underlain by confining strata of the Jackson Group and Cockfield Formation. The mean annual surface-water yield of the area that drains to the Ouachita River basin is nearly 2 million acre-feet. Flood-control projects have significantly reduced flooding in the area. Basin boundaries and low-flow characteristics of streams have been altered as a result of the flood-control projects and streamflow diversion for irrigation. The direction of ground-water flow generally is southward. Bayou Bartholomew functions mostly as a drain for ground-water flow from the west and as a recharge source to the aquifer east of the bayou. As a result of navigation pools, the Arkansas River is mostly a steady-recharge source to the aquifer. Pumpage from the aquifer and streams increased from about 20,000 acre-feet in 1941 to 237,000 acre-feet in 1970. Estimates of flow, derived from analog analysis but lacking field verification, indicate that recharge to the aquifer in 1970 was about 161,000 acre-feet. About 70 percent of the recharge was by capture from streams as a result of ground-water pumpage. Discharge from the aquifer was about 233,000 acre-feet. About 80 percent of the discharge was through wells. Stream diversion in 1970 from capture and open channel, excluding capture from the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers, was about 110,000 acre-feet. Return flow to streams from rice irrigation and fishponds was about 60,000 acre-feet. The chemical quality of streamflows is excellent for irrigation. Water from the aquifer generally ranges from permissible to excellent for irrigation. Because these are demonstration exercises, the information presented is not intended to be used for construction justification. The network is available and can be used to determine the effect on basin hydrology due to local development of the ground-water resource.

The model conditions simulated for this study are too complex to be described in detail. The upper model layer simulated the hydrologic conditions in the lower unit of the Chicot aquifer undifferentiated. The simulation included clay compaction and vertical leakage as well as transmissivity and storage. The lower model layer simulated the hydrologic conditions in the Evangeline aquifer which underlies the Chicot aquifer.

Generally the larger-yielding wells are along the Napa River where the alluvium is thickest and most permeable. Recharge to the alluvium is chiefly by percolation from streams and infiltration of precipitation. Discharge is chiefly flow to the Napa River, evapotranspiration, and pumpage from wells. Both recharge to, and discharge from, the alluvial aquifer are sensitively influenced by rainfall. About 190,000 acre-feet of water is presently (1972) stored in the alluvium of northern Napa Valley. Future annual water use in the project area will probably vary between 12,000 and 35,000 acre-feet and, for most purposes, can be supplied by the alluvial aquifer even during extended periods of limited rainfall. Generally low transmissivities in the alluvium, however, limit the opportunity for obtaining sustained, large yields from wells in much of the valley and require that large-scale development and operation of wells in much of the area be planned and synchronized.
Sustained drought conditions in the Napa Valley accompanied by expected increases in the use of ground water will probably cause significant reductions in the base flow of the Napa River and cause many shallow wells in the area to dry up.
Sodium chloride ground water occurs near Calistoga and in the vicinity of Oakville and in some places is not suitable for irrigation. Model studies indicate that limited migration of sodium chloride water into intensively pumped parts of the aquifer probably will not be a serious problem.

The results of test drilling and an infiltration test indicate that the subsurface material at the spreading grounds is permeable enough to allow recharged water to percolate to the water table. The data indicate that fault K extends into the Waterman Canyon-East Twin Creek area and may impede the lateral movement of recharged water. Fault K has no known surface expression and therefore probably does not affect the highly permeable younger alluvium. If that is so, fault K will be less effective as a barrier to ground-water movement as the recharge mound rises.
