The scope of the compilation is to describe systematically, in a form agreed upon by the California Department of Water Resources end. the Geological Survey, the (1) test location, (1) pumping data, (3) well data, and (4) summary of results. The results of these tests occasionally have been published, but usually they have been used only to obtain&nbsp;other information. Consequently, the results of aquifer tests have not always been readily available.</p><p>This report was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in cooperation with the California Department&nbsp;of Water Resources. Waterlogging because of overapplication of water and locally inadequate subsurface drainage is a serious problem. This study was undertaken by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs to evaluate the problem and to suggest remedies. \r\n\r\nFor this study, the geology was mapped, and data concerning 129 wells and test holes were gathered. The water level in 63 wells was measured periodically. Three test holes were drilled and 4 single-well and 1 multiple-well pump tests were made. The area includes all or a portion of the following towns: Acton, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Hudson, Littleton, Marlborough, Maynard, Stow, Sudbury, and Westford in Middlesex County; Berlin, Bolton, Boylston, Clinton, Grafton, Harvard, Northborough, Shrewsbury, and Westborough in Worcester County (see plate 1 in pocket).</p><p>This report presents data collected as part of an investigation of the ground-water resources in the Assabet River basin by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. The data have been prepared for release in order to make available to the public basic ground-water data that will be useful in the planning of water-resources development.</p><p>The data in this report were collected intermittently from 1939 to 1964 by H. A. Wilde, H. L. Pree, H. N. Halberg, J. A. Baker, R. W. Macomber, W. B. Fleck, and S. J. Pollock. The selected data in tables 2, 3, 4, and 5 represent those wells, test wells, and borings that were deemed representative of any given location. Data of some one hundred wells and test wells and over one thousand bridge and roadway borings are not included in this report, but may be inspected at the U.S. Geological Survey, Ground Water Branch, 211 Congress Street, Boston, Massachusetts. Tables 6-9 include data on chemical analyses of water samples, physical and hydrologic properties of materials samples, and water-table measurements made during the years 1961 through 1964. The flood resulted from a series of storms in late December, but primarily from the warm torrential rainfall of December 21-23. This rainfall reflected the combined effect of moist unstable airmasses, strong west-southwest winds, and mountain ranges oriented nearly at right angles to the flow of air. The magnitude of the rainfall over much of the mountainous area was equal to or greater than that estimated to have an average return period of 100 years. Precipitation totals in excess of 10 inches in 24 hours and 15 inches in 48 hours were commonplace in the mountains and interior valleys. The peak discharge of streams draining these drenched areas was extremely high and also had a return period estimated to be greater than 100 years. By contrast, some of the areas immediately adjacent to the Pacific Ocean had maximum 24-hour rainfalls of only 2 inches and the small streams draining these low-altitude basins experienced rises that It cause damages probably in excess of ten millions of dollars in the State of Iowa. Studied now in progress will more thoroughly cover this and other phases of the flood.</p>\n<p>The underlying cause of the flood was an abnormally cold winter which prevented the melting of an excessive snow cover in the upper reaches of the basin. Heavy rains late in March followed by rapid melting triggered the runoff which caused the floods. Peak discharges experienced ranged from 276,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) at McGregor near the northern boundary of the State to 327,000 cfs at Keokuk near the southern boundary. Tributary streams in Iowa were receding as the main-stem flood peak passed their mouths. The discharge they contributed was generally insignificant except for the larger streams.</p>\n<p>Flood data compiled for the part of the River along the eastern border include flood discharges, flood elevations, and the frequency of floods of varying magnitudes. They also include the daily or more frequent stage and discharge data for both the Mississippi River and the downstream gaging stations on Iowa tributaries for the period March-May 1965. The relation between head loss and rate change of stage was determined by isolating the effects of the various components in the intake system, so that equations could be derived that enable one to compute the head loss in an intake system composed of any combination of these components.
