No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Woodville quadrangle. Eight tables totaling over 100 pages present data on location, depth, area, lake level, ecological and game-management classification, inflowing and outflowing streams, soils, bedrock type, water added to or take from lake, and reported lake-related problems.</p>\n<p>SYSTEM 2000, a generalized computer data-base management system, was used to organize the data and prepare the tables. SYSTEM 2000 provides powerful capabilities for future retrieval and analyses of the data. The data base is available to potential users so that questions not implicitly anticipated in the preparation of the published tables can be answered readily, and the user can retrieve data in tabular The average concentration of suspended sediment for Wisconsin streams is low in comparison with that of many streams in the United States&mdash;110 milligrams per litre for Wisconsin, as compared with 600 milligrams per litre for 50 percent of the United States (Rainwater, 1962). Enough data have been collected at 84 of the 118 sites to calculate an average annual suspended-sediment yield at those sites.</p>\n<p>Measured average annual yields range from about 680 tons per square mile (238 tonnes per square kilometre) in the \"Driftless Area\" to 3.1 tons per square mile (1.1 tonnes per square kilometre) in the Northern Highland province. The average suspended-sediment yield for Wisconsin is about 80 tons per square mile per year (28 tonnes per square kilometre per year). Only three areas in the State may be considered to have a sediment problem. They are sections of the \"Driftless Area\" of southwestern Wisconsin, the Lake Superior red-clay area, and areas of expanding urbanization in southeastern Wisconsin.</p>\n<p>Sediment-yield prediction equations have been developed for the Northern Highland province, the Central Plain province, the Eastern Ridges and Lowlands province, and the \"Driftless Area\" (Martin, 1932 and Thwaites, 1956). These four equations make it possible to predict average annual suspendedsediment yields at any point on about 95 percent of the streams in the State. The prediction technique involves regression equations that relate average annual suspended-sediment yields to factors, such as topography, soils, land use and cover, stream hydraulics, and climatic conditions. The standard error of estimate for these equations, which only represents the accuracy of an estimated sediment yield at an ungaged site, ranges from 28 to 38 Three wells adjacent to the disposal pond yielded water rich in nutrients, organic carbon and many other chemical constituents. Total coliform bacteria ranged from less than 100 to 660 colonies per 100 milliliters in samples collected from the shallowest well (depth 20 feet). At well depths of 35 and 45 feet bacterial counts were less than 20 colonies per 100 milliliters or zero. Concentrations of several constituents in water samples collected from the wells downgradient from the landfill, disposal pond, and an incinerator wash pond were greater than in samples collected from wells immediately upgradient of the landfill. A comparison of sodium-chloride ion ratios indicated that downgradient ground-water contamination was related to the incinerator wash water pond rather than the septic tank sludge pond. Wells in the water-table aquifer yield generally less than 50 gpm and dissolved solids concentration is less than 500 mg/liter except in coastal areas and the peninsula southwest of the Myakka River estuary. Wells in the Venice area that tap zone 1 usually yield less than 30 gmp. The quality of water is good except in the peninsula area. Zone 2 is the most highly developed aquifer in the heavily populated coastal areas. Wells yield as much as 200 gpm. In most areas, water is of acceptable quality. Wells that tap zone 3 yield as much as 500 gmp. Fluoride concentration ranges from 1 to 3.5 mg/liter. Zone 4 yields as much as 1,500 gpm to large diameter wells. Except in the extreme northeastern part of the area water from zone 4 usually contains high concentrations of fluoride and sulfate. Zone 5 is the most productive aquifer in the area, but dissolved solids concentrations usually are too high for public supply except in the extreme northeast. Surface water derived from natural drainage is of good quality except for occasional high color in summer. Most of the streams in the Myakka River basin area have small drainage basins, are of short channel length, and do not yield high volumes of flow. During the dry season, streamflow is maintained by groundwater discharge, and, as a result, chloride, sulfate, and dissolved solids concentrations and the hardness of the water are above drinking water standards for some streams. Average lateral hydraulic conductivity for material in the screened interval of the test well is 216 feet per day. Specific yield of the material at water-table depth is about 0.10. Anisotropy, or ratio of lateral hydraulic conductivity to vertical hydraulic conductivity, is between 1 and 5 for the uppermost 60 feet of saturated material, but is probably much higher at greater depths. Calculation of drawdown after pumping 200 days at 1 million gallons per day indicates lateral intrusion of saline water from the sea would not reach the well and that the area of ground-water contribution would be sufficient to intercept an amount of average annual recharge equal to pumpage. Using the previously determined aquifer constants and the maximum drawdown after 200 days of pumping at 1 million gallons per day, it was determined that a stable upconing adjustment of the fresh water/saline-water interface would occur below the pumping well, and saline water would not reach the well through vertical intrusion. Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor. In general, pumpage has increased at an irregular rate since the completion of the first well to this aquifer in 1886. These withdrawals are responsible for an almost continuous decline of water levels in wells throughout the Memphis area. Water-level data indicate that over the years a broad, regional cone of depression has developed in the potentiometric surface of the Memphis Sand and is centered near downtown Memphis. Areally smaller, subsidiary cones are superimposed upon this regional cone in areas heavily pumped by municipal and industrial wells. Pumpage from the Memphis Sand in Shelby County, Tenn., was 188 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) or 712 Ml/d (million litres per day) in 1975, although a maximum of 190 Mgal/d (719 Ml/d) was reached in 1974.</p>\n<p>Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand (\"1,400-foot\" sand) began in 1924 and increased at a yearly rate of about 0.6 Mgal/d (2.3 Ml/d) until 1942. From 1943 to 1962, pumpage averaged about 11.5 Mgal/d (43.5 Ml/d), then was reduced as MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division) discontinued wells that became unserviceable. MLGW ceased pumping from the aquifer in 1974, and pumpage from the remaining industrial wells in Shelby County in 1975 was 4.4 Mgal/d (16.6 Ml/d). Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand generally have risen since 1963. Water l evels in the aquifers in the Memphis area fluctuate inversely with changes in pumping. One additional site was put under surveillance in 1976. Except for construction changes wrought by installation of the pipeline, most of the sites surveyed showed very little change since the 1975 surveys. Some of the significant events of 1976 at the monitored crossing sites include: glacier-dammed lake break-out floods on the Tazlina and Tsina Rivers, severe icings on the Gulkana River which resulted in a spring flood 3-4 feet (1 meter) over banktop, and virtual completion of all the buried crossings and all but one overhead crossing before the 1976 channel erosion resurveys were made.</p><p>Aerial photogrammetric surveys were used again in 1976 on the same seven sites as in 1975. Comparison of the photogrammetric surveys with each other and with on-the-ground surveys indicate that the method is generally applicable for channel erosion studies. However, it requires engineering judgement and personal knowledge of the site to avoid reaching inaccurate conclusions about channel change in some The estimated 1970 water use in the study area averaged about 13 million gallons per day (mgd); of this amount about 9 mgd came from surface-water sources--from a large reservoir outside the study area--and about 4 mgd came from ground water pumped from two aquifers in the area. Anticipated water use soon will be about 18 to 21 mgd; virtually all the additional quantity required (about 5 to 8 mgd) above present use must come from ground-water sources. Preliminary evaluation of the aquifers suggests that an additional 1.5 mgd can be developed from the upper aquifer and 7 mgd from the lower aquifer. Existing wells tapping the lower aquifer might yield additional water and increase the total yield in the area by 3.5 mgd, and new wells drilled in selected areas could produce an additional 3.5 mgd from this aquifer. However, additional, large-scale ground-water withdrawal from the lower aquifer could induce saltwater intrusion into wells situated in coastal areas.
