About 32 percent of the county is covered by lakes, swamps, and marshes. Water requirements in 1970 averaged about 54 million gallons per day. About 85 percent of the water was obtained from wells; about 15 percent from lakes. The Floridan aquifer supplies almost all the ground water used in Lake County. Annual recharge to the Floridan aquifer averages about 7 inches over the county; runoff average 8.5 inches. The quality of ground and surface water in Lake County is in general good enough for most uses; however, the poor quality of Floridan-aquifer water in the St. John River Valley probably results from the upward movement of saline water along a fault zone. Surface water in Lake County is usually less mineralized than ground water but is more turbid and colored. The western semiarid part of the region is water deficient, that is, potential evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation. The eastern, humid part has a surplus. Water use in the region in 1970 averaged 10 billion gallons per day (438 cubic metres per second), of which more than 65 percent was ground water. The largest use of ground water was for irrigation of crops, mostly in the water-deficient areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado. Because of its ready availability and widespread occurrence, ground water is used throughout the region to supply municipal and rural water needs. The most productive aquifers, capable of yielding more than 50 gallons per minute (0.0032 cubic metres per second) to individual wells, are alluvium, carbonate. rocks, gypsum, and sandstone. Fresh water in storage in aquifers in the region is estimated to be 2 billion acre-feet (2.5x1012 cubic metres). In addition, a large, unmeasured volume of saline water (containing more than 1,000 milligrams per litre of dissolved solids) underlies the fresh water at depths generally less than 500 feet (150 metres).</p>\n<p>The flow of water in each aquifer depends upon the physical and hydrologic characteristics of the aquifer, the climate, and the relation to, and the character of, adjacent rocks and streams. These factors also determine the effect of water-supply development or other man-induced stresses on the flow and the quality of water in the aquifers. Analog and digital models of aquifers can be used to evaluate stresses on aquifers and thereby provide water managers and planners with efficient tools for planning the development and continued use of aquifers.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp813H","usgsCitation":"Bedinger, M.S., and Sniegocki, R., The reservoir system is operated under the assumption of a 3-day prior knowledge of inflows. This information is attainable from the ooperational reservoir-inflow forecasting model developed in the Part I report. The model, developed for this part of the study, incorporates an inflow component, a diversion-canal component, and a reservoir system component and is capable of evaluating the performance of the reservoir systemem for a variety of operating rule conditions. All model components were verified using observed reservoir input and output data for a 6-year (1967-72 water years) period. In addition, a long-term 31-year simulation under present rule of operation was performed and the results summarized statistically. The model may be used for simulating other rule curves of operation for planning studies of reservoir system performance. The primary data base consisted of 98 long-term gaging-station records collected within this 27,300-square-mile headwater area of the Ohio River basin. Supplemental information was derived from 83 short-term records. Mean annual runoff is at a regional minimum of less than 12 inches in an area extending from the northern West Virginia panhandle to the headwaters of the Mahoning River in Ohio. Mean annual runoff of more than 32 inches occurs in parts of the upper Cheat River basin in West Virginia. The zone of high runoff trends northeastward along the western slopes of the Allegheny Mountains; magnitudes diminish to about 25 inches at the eastern basin boundary near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Runoff of this magnitude occurs also in a band across the upper Allegheny River basin in Pennsylvania. Ratios of mean annual discharge to the 30-year reference-period average were computed for each year of record for all long-term gaging stations. Annual discharges have ranged from about 30 percent to 200 percent of the 30-year mean. Water discharge and total sediment discharge at these stations, representative of the 1943-72 period, were estimated from long-term flow data for nearby gaging stations and water-sediment discharge relations determined for the 1968-73 water years. Most of the total annual sediment discharge at each station occurs during a few days each year. The quantity of sediment transported in a single day often accounts for more than 40 percent of the total annual sediment discharge. Estimated sediment discharge for the upper Arroyo Grande and Santa Rita Creek basins during the 1943-72 water years averaged 53,000 tons and 23,000 tons per year. Long-term sediment deposition in Lopez Reservoir, which is in the southern part of the upper Arroyo Grande basin, was estimated to be 35 acre-feet per year. Several sedimentary features have been observed in the data, The bank is recognized as a compound feature resulting from erosion of Tertiary coastal-plain strata followed by deposition of an extensive sediment wedge on the western flank of the cuesta. Marine planation (probably Late Pleistocene) truncated this bank morphology producing an erosion surface roughly paralleling the present sea floor. The truncated bank surface is blanketed by a veneer of complex Late Pleistocene drift which masks underlying features and is being reworked by modern processes. Present bank morphology is inferred-to be arather recent development. \r\n\r\nA proper understanding of the significance of complex bank sediments with respect to the potential geologic hazards of drilling or placement of bottom. supported structures necessitates a more detailed seismic reflection program, in conjunction with geotechnical analysis of core-samples.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76874","usgsCitation":"Lewis, R.S., and Sylwester, R., 1976, Shallow sedimentary framework of Georges Bank: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-874, 11 [i.e. 22] leaves :ill. It was centered about 5 km beneath the Kalapana area on the southeastern coast of the island at 19° 20.1 ' N., long 155° 01.4 ' W.). The earthquake was preceded by numerous foreshocks, the largest of which was a 5.7-magnitude jolt at 0336 the same morning, and was accompanied, or closely followed, by a tsunami seismic sea wave), massive ground movements, hundreds of aftershocks, and a volcanic eruption. The tsunami reached a height of 12.2-14.6 m above sea level on the southeastern coast about 25 km west of the earthquake center, elsewhere generally 8 m or less. The south flank of Kilauea Volcano, which forms the southeastern part of the island, was deformed by dislocations along old and new faults along a 25-km long zone. Downward and seaward fault displacements resulted in widespread subsidence, locally as much as 3.5 m, leaving coconut palms standing in the sea and nearly submerging a small, near-shore island. A brief, small-volume volcanic eruption, triggered by the earthquake and associated ground movements occurred at Kilauea's summit about three-quarters of an hour later. The earthquake, together with the tsunami it generated, locally caused severe property damage in the southeastern part of the island; the tsunami also caused two deaths. Damage from the earthquake and related catastrophic events is estimated by the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency at about $4.1 million. The 1975 Kalapana earthquake and accompanying events represent the latest events in a recurring pattern of behavior for Kilauea. A large earthquake of about the same magnitude, tsunami, subsidence, and eruption occurred at Kilauea in 1868, and a less powerful earthquake and similar related processes are believed to have occurred in 1823. Indeed, the geologic evidence suggests that such events have been repeated many times in Kilauea's past and will continue. The 1975 events serve as a critical, though tragic, reminder of the dynamic nature of the volcano and point up the need for careful land-use planning and adequate building codes to minimize damage and loss of life from similar events in the future. Detailed scientific study of the cause and effects of the November 29, 1975, event will take many months. The precision for low, medium, and high concentrations of each element determined is represented by superimposed frequency diagrams and displays the frequency of reported values occurring within one-sixth order reporting intervals about the mean. Results are derived from mixed analyst and instrument conditions with no controls enforced other than randomization of samples. The precision of the six-step (one-sixth order) semiquantitative spectrographic analysis utilized by the Denver-based mobile laboratories exceeds that which is necessary for exploration geochemistry. Disallowing results obtained near the detection levels, the repeatability of the method, in general, is shown to be within on adjoining reporting interval on each side of the mean, 83 percent of the time, and within two adjoining reporting intervals on each side of the mean 96 percent of the time.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor.
