The assemblage indicates a depth comparable to that existing today. Regional relations suggest that the Cretaceous and Eocene deposits deepen to the west toward New Jersey.</p><p id=\"SP0010\">Two mollusk-bearing blocks dredged from the northern side of Georges Bank are correlative with the Miocene Yorktown Formation. Rocks from two other stations are probably Miocene. The formation name was extended, incorrectly in most cases, to rocks as far north as British Columbia and as far south as southern California. The formation in its type area was never adequately studied, resulting in fallacious concepts of its faunas and erroneous correlations.</p><p>The San Lorenzo Formation has been subdivided into the Twobar Shale Member of Narizian (late Eocene) age and Rices Mudstone Member of Rufugian and Zemorrian (Eocene and Oligocene) age. Faunas and lithology suggest that the older member was deposited slowly in a bathyal, open-sea environment, whereas the Rices Mudstone Member seems to have been deposited rapidly in a restricted basin. Glauconite at the contact of the members suggests a stratigraphic break in the depositional sequence.</p><p>Most, perhaps all, of the so-called characteristic San Lorenzo mollusks are from the upper (Zemorrian) part of the Rices Mudstone Member, or from the overlying Vaqueros Sandstone. Part II: Technical report","docAbstract":"<p>During the 1960 and 1961 water years an annual load of about 2 million tons of dissolved minerals was contributed to the Great Salt Lake area by surficial sources. Almost 60 percent of this load was sodium and chloride. Of the six units contributing to the lake area, three - the Bear River, the Jordan River, and the unit comprising drains and sewage canals – contributed about three-fourths of the runoff and of the load. Model systems using cellulose to replace the fish tissue were also used. The samples were irradiated at 1 Mrad in an air, nitrogen, or oxygen atmosphere. The destruction of −SH groups was measured and related to the amount and physical state of the tissue water. As free water was removed, destruction steadily increased, reaching a maximum at about 20% moisture. Destruction decreased markedly at moisture levels below 10%, and calorimetric measurements confirmed that 10% moisture was about the level of bound water in this species. These data suggest that dehydration favors the reaction of solute molecules with free radicals formed in the free water of muscle cells. At moisture levels greater than about 20%, simple free radical recombination is more likely than reaction with solute molecules, while below 20% moisture the reverse is true.
