Several sedimentary features have been observed in the data, The bank is recognized as a compound feature resulting from erosion of Tertiary coastal-plain strata followed by deposition of an extensive sediment wedge on the western flank of the cuesta. Marine planation (probably Late Pleistocene) truncated this bank morphology producing an erosion surface roughly paralleling the present sea floor. The truncated bank surface is blanketed by a veneer of complex Late Pleistocene drift which masks underlying features and is being reworked by modern processes. Present bank morphology is inferred-to be arather recent development. \r\n\r\nA proper understanding of the significance of complex bank sediments with respect to the potential geologic hazards of drilling or placement of bottom. supported structures necessitates a more detailed seismic reflection program, in conjunction with geotechnical analysis of core-samples.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76874","usgsCitation":"Lewis, R.S., and Sylwester, R., 1976, Shallow sedimentary framework of Georges Bank: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-874, 11 [i.e. 22] leaves :ill. About 32 percent of the county is covered by lakes, swamps, and marshes. Water requirements in 1970 averaged about 54 million gallons per day. About 85 percent of the water was obtained from wells; about 15 percent from lakes. The Floridan aquifer supplies almost all the ground water used in Lake County. Annual recharge to the Floridan aquifer averages about 7 inches over the county; runoff average 8.5 inches. The quality of ground and surface water in Lake County is in general good enough for most uses; however, the poor quality of Floridan-aquifer water in the St. John River Valley probably results from the upward movement of saline water along a fault zone. Surface water in Lake County is usually less mineralized than ground water but is more turbid and colored. Water discharge and total sediment discharge at these stations, representative of the 1943-72 period, were estimated from long-term flow data for nearby gaging stations and water-sediment discharge relations determined for the 1968-73 water years. Most of the total annual sediment discharge at each station occurs during a few days each year. The quantity of sediment transported in a single day often accounts for more than 40 percent of the total annual sediment discharge. Estimated sediment discharge for the upper Arroyo Grande and Santa Rita Creek basins during the 1943-72 water years averaged 53,000 tons and 23,000 tons per year. Long-term sediment deposition in Lopez Reservoir, which is in the southern part of the upper Arroyo Grande basin, was estimated to be 35 acre-feet per year. The data were obtained from geologic and geophysical studies of nine cored test holes, from laboratory analyses of samples of the aquifer materials, and from recent stratigraphic studies by other investigators.

The Georgetown Formation and the Edwards Group or their equivalent stratigraphic units are extensively exposed in central Texas and they occur in the subsurface throughout southern Texas. They consist of a complex sequence of carbonate rocks deposited during Early Cretaceous time under different depositional conditions. Within the study area, the thickness of the carbonate rocks ranges from less than 400 feet (122 m) in the eastern part of the area to more than 600 feet (183 m) in the southwestern part.

The depositional environments significantly affected the texture and the composition of the sediments. The Maverick Basin in the southwestern part of the study area was a euxinic basin surrounded by a barrier rudistid reef. Fine-grained carbonates and some associated evaporites occur within this basin. The San Marcos Platform in the eastern part of the study area was intermittently submerged by a transgressing continental sea. Much of the sediments are extensively reworked and burrowed by marine organisms. Several thick sequences of dolomites, evaporites, and associated collapsed deposits occur on the San Marcos Platform. The carbonates of the San Marcos Platform are extensively dissolved within the fresh-water zone. Much of the dissolution is selective of beds containing evaporites or porous dolomites.

The dominant structural feature of the study area is a broad homocline that extends from nearly flat-lying beds on the Edwards Plateau to steeply dipping beds of the deep subsurface of the Gulf Coastal Plain. The homocline is interrupted by the Balcones Fault Zone, which is a zone of normal faults that extend across the study area. The intensity and complexity of faulting increases eastward as part of a progression from gentle flexures in the southwestern part of the study area to a complex pattern of tilted fault blocks on the San Marcos Platform.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76627","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the San Antonio City Water Board and the Texas Water Development Board","usgsCitation":"Maclay, R.W., and Small, T.A., 1976, Progress report on geology of the Edwards aquifer, San Antonio area, Texas, and preliminary interpretation of borehole geophysical and laboratory data on carbonate rocks: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-627, Report: 63 p.; Pumped ground water supplied a fish-rearing facility for 15 months, and the waste water recharged the local ground-water system through an infiltration pond. Eighty-three percent of the recharged water returned to the well (recycled). Make-up water from the ground-water system provided the remaining 17 percent.
\n
Pumping 300 gallons per minute (20 litres per second), combined with recycling, resulted in water-level declines equivalent to a pumping rate of approximately 50 gallons per minute (3 litres per second). Using this effective pumping rate in the Theis nonequilibrium equation resulted in predicted drawdowns within 0.5 foot (0.2 metres) of those observed throughout the 15-month period.
\n
The concentration of nitrate in the water supply increased only slightly during the 15 months of recycling. Nitrate levels in a closed recycling system (100 percent recycling efficiency) would have reached 9 milligrams per litre, but observed levels did not exceed 4 milligrams per litre, and at the end of the recycling period they were lower than the initial levels. Mass-balance equations relate observed nitrate levels to the loading imposed on the system, the pumping rate, the volume of ground water affected by recycling, and the recycling efficiency. The equations predict nitrate concentrations (or other ions not attenuated by movement through the unsaturated part of the aquifer) within 1 milligram per litre of observed concentrations except during periods when nutrients are used in plant growth. The method does not account for nutrients utilized by aquatic vegetation in the infiltration pond, so that observed levels would usually be even lower than predicted. The predicted response of the local groundwater system to a nutrient loading equivalent to that generated by a hatchery producing approximately 100,000 pounds (50,000 kilograms) of trout and salmon per year indicates that maximum nitrate levels would remain significantly below the limit established by the State of Wisconsin (and the U.S. Public Health Service, 1962) for drinking water.
\n
The water-supply temperature can be maintained within the optimum range for trout and salmon rearing (10.0° to 15.5°C or 50° to 60°F) during recycling. Continuous recycling during the study period resulted in watersupply temperatures ranging between 7.0° and 14.0°C (45° and 57°F). Longterm continuous recycling would result in water-supply temperatures ranging between 7.0° and 14.5°C (45° and 58°F). Selective recycling (recycling water for only 8 months of the year) would provide water-supply temperatures ranging from 9.5° to 15.5°C (49° to 60°F).
\n
A permanent recharge pond with supplementary ponds would fulfill the needs of a hatchery development at the Greenwood Wildlife Refuge site, Waushara County, Wisconsin, and insure protection of the ground-water system. Eighty percent or more of the water pumped could be recycled by recharging waste water near the supply well. Selective recycling (recharging water to the ground-water system outside the zone of recycling during approximately 4 months of each year) could maintain optimum water-supply temperatures, reduce water-level declines by 50 percent (compared to no recycling), maintain nitrate levels in the water supply below limits established for drinking water supplies, and minimize the effect of water-supply development on the regional ground-water system.
\n
Other recharge-recycling schemes can also be evaluated. Estimating the recycling efficiency (of recharge ponds, trenches, spreading areas, or irrigated fields) provides a basis for predicting water-level declines, the concentration of conservative ions (conservative in the sense that no reaction other than mixing occurs to change the character of the ion being considered) in the water supply and in the regional ground-water system, and the temperature of the water supply. The peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 years were determined for each station and are given in tabular form where appropriate.

Features that define the reference width vary with location and stream type. A discussion is given of the features that were used in measuring reference widths.

The relation between the magnitude of floods of various frequencies and the reference width and main-channel slope was reliable with a standard error of about 65 percent for most of the areas of the State; however, no reliable relation could be found for many stream channels in a large area of southeastern New Mexico, and it is recommended that the relation not be used in that area. The reasons for this difficulty is believed to be due to recent channel entrenchment in the area.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Maps having a 2-foot contour interval and a horizontal scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet have been used for a base on which flood boundaries were delineated for 25-, 50-, and 100-year floods to be expected in each basin under ultimate development conditions. Included are techniques employed in computing discharges and profiles as well as the flood profiles and maps on which flood boundaries have been delineated for that part of Cameron Run basin below Lake Barcroft in both Fairfax County and the city of Alexandria.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76443","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the County of Fairfax","usgsCitation":"Soule, P., 1976, Flood-plain delineation for Cameron Run Basin, Fairfax County-Alexandria City, Virginia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-443, 94 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76443.","productDescription":"94 p.","numberOfPages":"96","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154371,"rank":0,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0443/report.pdf"},{"id":286005,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0443/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Virginia","county":"Fairfax County","city":"Alexandria City","otherGeospatial":"Cameron Run Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -77.5,38.5 ], [ -77.5,39.0 ], [ -77.0,39.0 ], [ -77.0,38.5 ], [ -77.5,38.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e3e4b07f02db5e5620","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soule, Pat L.","contributorId":71576,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Soule","given":"Pat L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183621,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
