ERTS spacecraft represent the first step in merging space and remote-sensing technologies into a system for inventorying and managing the Earth 's resources. Examples presented in this book demonstrate ERTS ' vast potential for inventorying resources, monitoring environmental conditions, and measuring changes. Such information is essential for the full evaluation of the Federal lands and determining their future use, as well as for improved planning of overall land use throughout the United States and the world. Ten bureaus of the U.S. Department of Interior have roles in the ERTS project. Nearly all of these participating bureaus are represented in almost 100 papers included in this book. The study is concerned only with lakes encircled by water-table mounds that are at a higher altitude than lake level. Simulations of one-lake and multiple-lake systems in vertical sections show that for many hydrogeologic settings, the line (divide) separating local from regional ground-water flow systems is continuous beneath individual lakes. If the divide is continuous, there exists a point along it at which the head is a minimum compared to all other points along the divide. This point of minimum head is always greater than the head represented by lake level, therefore in such a setting there can be no movement of lake water through the lake bed to the ground-water system. In a setting where the divide is not continuous, the lake loses water through part of its bed, but rarely in the littoral zone of the lake.

Factors that strongly influence the position, shape, and continuity of the flow-system divide beneath lakes are height of the water table on the downslope side of the lake relative to lake level, position and hydraulic conductivity of aquifers within the ground-water reservoir, ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity of the groundwater system, and lake depth.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp1001","usgsCitation":"Winter, T.C., 1976, Numerical simulation analysis of the interaction of lakes and ground water: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1001, iv, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1001.","productDescription":"iv, 45 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34022,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1001/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123992,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1001/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6adff0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winter, Thomas C.","contributorId":84736,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winter","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152885,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is in the Mississippi Plateau region of Kentucky and lies within the drainage basin of the Cumberland River and Tradewater River basins. In 1974 municipal water-supply systems utilized about 1,115,000 gal of water per day from Barkley Lake. This use is expected to nearly double by the year 2000. Rural water supplies are obtained primarily from three geologic units - the Ste. Genevieve Limestone and the upper and lower members of the St. Louis Limestone. All three units can yield sufficient water for domestic and stock purposes , but the Ste. Genevieve at Princeton has yielded as much as 150 gal/min to individual wells. Net seepage (net exchange of water between lake and aquifers) can be estimated by equation S = AX + BY, where S is net seepage, X represents hydraulic gradient between lake and water-table aquifer, A is lumped parameter representing effect of hydraulic conductivity and cross-sectional area of materials in flow section of water-table aquifer, Y is head difference between lake level and potentiometric surface of Floridan aquifer, and B is lumped parameter representing effect of hydraulic conductivity, area, and thickness of materials between lake bottom and Floridan aquifer. If values of S, X, and Y are available for two contrasting water-level conditions, coefficients A and B are determinable by solution of two simultaneous equations. If the relation between lake and ground-water level is the same on all sides of the lake--with regard to each aquifer--and if X and Y are truly representative of these relations, then X and Y terms of equation provide valid estimates of inflow to lake from water-table aquifer and outflow from lake to Floridan aquifer. The basin is entirely within the Yakima Indian Reservation and is bordered and drained on the east by the Yakima River.

Average annual precipitation ranges from about 35 inches in the western upland to less than 10 inches in the eastern lowland. This amounts to a yearly total of about 562,000 acre-feet, most of which falls in the upland. Much of the precipitation falls as snow, and the streamflow from the upland reflects this fact, having a high sustained runoff during the snowmelt months of April, May, and June.

In 1973 about 176,000 acre-feet of water was carried by canals for irrigation of about 19,000 acres in the lowland; of this quantity, about 173,000 acre-feet was imported from the adjoining Toppenish Creek basin. This high application rate of about 9.25 acre-feet of water per acre is largely responsible for severe waterlogging problems in many parts of the lowland. Also contributing to the problem are the fine-grained sedimentary deposits that generally overlie the alluvial sand and gravel aquifers in the lowland and retard downward percolation of applied water into those units. In other areas the upward discharge from aquifers in the underlying Yakima Basalt of the Columbia River Basalt Group contributes to waterlogging. Relieving artesiar heads by pumping, combined with reduced application and improved drainage, could alleviate the waterlogging, and free water for use in the irrigation of presently nonirrigated parts of the basin.

Young volcanic rocks (basalt) in the southwestern, upland part of the basin appear to contain significant ground-water reservoirs. These rocks receive nearly 70,000 acre-feet a year in recharge from precipitation and, although much of this water is what sustains the high base flows of the streams draining the rocks, the remaining water offers potential for development as a high-altitude source for irrigation water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr76685","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Yakima Tribal Council","usgsCitation":"Mundorff, M., Nish, M., and Cline, D., 1976, Water resources of the Satus Creek Basin, Yakima Indian Reservation, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-685, Report: vii, 102 p.; 1 Plate: 25.82 x 22.26 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76685.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 102 p.; 1 Plate: 25.82 x 22.26 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143119,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0685/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":363676,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0685/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":363675,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0685/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Satus River Creek Basin, Yakima Indian Reservation","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.29166667,\n              47.16666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              47.16666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -120,\n              47.33333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.29166667,\n              47.33333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.29166667,\n              47.16666667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f005e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mundorff, M.J.","contributorId":48158,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mundorff","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161411,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nish, Mac","contributorId":56792,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nish","given":"Mac","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161410,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Cline, D.R.","contributorId":45655,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cline","given":"D.R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161412,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The most productive aquifers are outwash and ice-contact deposits. Their locations and the most favorable areas for obtaining large yields from them are indicated on the map. The largest reported yield from a well in unconsolidated deposits is 100 gpm, but it is likely that in places as much as 500 gpm can be obtained from properly located and developed wells. Ground water is available to drilled wells in bedrock in sufficient quantity for domestic use. The average yield from bedrock wells is 11 gpm, the median yield is 5 gpm, and the maximum reported yield is 150 gpm. The quality of the water is generally good, although brackish or salty water is obtained by some wells on the coast.
