Two seepage runs, one in October 1973, and the other in September 1974, showed that most of the low flow is combined treated-sewage and industrial cooling-water discharge. This effluent was 4.66 cubic feet per second (1.3 cubic metres per second) on September 19, 1974, and discharged into the headwaters of the Pike River; near the mouth the discharge was essentially the same. During drought this effluent could be lost gradually by evapotranspiration and by seepage to the ground-water reservoir. The Q7,2 discharge estimate near the mouth is 0.0 cubic foot per second. Water temperatures October 25-26, 1973, ranged from 9.5 to 16 degrees Celsius, whereas those for. September 19-20, 1974, ranged from 10 to 22 degrees Celsius. Dissolved oxygen October 25-26, 1973, ranged from 4 to 13.5 milligrams per litre; for September 19-20, 1974, the range was from 6.0 to 12.5 milligrams per litre. Beginning in 1927, the placers were worked for 7 years by small-scale mining methods; in later years dragline excavators and a dredge were utilized. These deposits are important, not only because they are of high grade but because they are the only commercial source of platinum metals in the United States.&nbsp;</p><p>The bedded rocks of this area are sedimentary and volcanic rocks of late Paleozoic(?) age that have been intruded by a variety of ultrabasic rocks. The platinum metals of the placers have been derived from a mass of dunite and related rocks that constitute the bedrock of Red Mountain in the upper valley of the Salmon River. The western headwater tributaries of this stream are the fluvial conduits that have produced all the placers in the valley of the river.</p><p>The principal placers lie in two pay streaks, one in the valley floor of the Salmon River and the other in an ancient stream channel along the east side of this valley. The stream-channel deposit, called the bench pay streak, was formed in early Pleistocene time; its alluvial materials consist largely of clay derived from an ancient moraine believed to be of Nebraskan age. The valley-floor deposit, called the pay streak of the valley floor, consists of alluvial materials of fluvial and glaciofluvial origin whose ages range from Yarmouth to Holocene. Both channels contain high-grade placers that have yielded a large volume of platinum metals.</p><p>The platinum metals of these deposits are contained mainly in two alloys intergrown in a pseudoeutectic fabric. The major alloy is mainly platinum, with a small amount of iridium, still smaller amounts of rhodium and palladium, and probably some osmium and ruthenium. The minor alloy is dominantly iridium and osmium with less platinum and still less ruthenium and rhodium. The compositions of these two alloys are somewhat variable but tend to approach constant mean values. A small amount of free gold is recovered with the platinum metals. In addition to these two alloys, minute amounts of five platinum minerals have been identified. The weighted mean percentages of platinum, iridium, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, and gold, as mined from 1936 to 1972, are respectively 82.25, 11.32, 2.15, 0.17, 1.30, 0.38, and 2.43.</p><p>The lodes from which these placers have been derived are, or have been, localized in the Red Mountain ridge, where the principal rocks are dunite and serpentinite. No lodes have been recognized, either because the platinum metals are sparsely distributed or because a large part of the platiniferous rock has been eroded. It is known, however, that the amounts of iridium, osmium, and ruthenium, or of osmiridium, decrease from south to north. Other generalizations regarding the composition and granularity of these metals have been deduced. The size and shape of the platinum lodes may have ranged from diffuse disseminations to high-grade concentrations in small loci. Under certain assumptions, the tenor of platinum metals in the dunite can be roughly approximated. Utilizing two totally different methods of computation, the mean tenor has been estimated to lie between 0.19 and 0.27 grain of platinum metals per cubic yard of dunite, or 0.014 to 0.023 gram per stere. Frequency-discharge profiles are shown for regulated reaches on eleven major streams. These regression equations and discharge profiles enable the design engineer to estimate flood-frequency characteristics for almost all streams that drain more than 2 square miles.</p><p>Ten regression models for eight flood-frequency regions consist of regression equations that relate floods for recurrence intervals of 2.33, 10, 25, 50 and 100 years to readily determinable drainage-basin characteristics. Individual equations include no more than two of the following drainage-basin characteristics as independent variables: drainage area, channel slope, percent of area which serves for storage of surface water, and index of average annual excess precipitation.</p><p>Standard errors of estimate for regression equations applicable to drainage areas of more than 15 square miles range from 16 to 33 percent. For smaller drainage areas, the highest standard error of estimate is 56 percent. The equations do not apply to streams whose drainage basins are highly urbanized or extensively strip mines; neither do they apply if runoff from more than 15 percent of the drainage basin upstream from the site of interest is regulated.</p><p>Peak discharges for recurrence intervals of 2.33, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years, as attenuated by installed and planned reservoirs, are presented for the principal regulated streams by means of discharge-frequency profiles.</p><p>Tables of drainage basin characteristics and discharge-frequency distributions are A network of observation wells has been established near the sites, and data have been collected from the wells and from nearby streams. Ground-water mounds have built up under the lagoons as percolation of effluents occurred. Percolating effluents mix with ground water and form plumes of ground water that contain chemical constituents for the effluents. Each plume tends to move down the hydraulic gradient in a direction generally perpendicular to the water-level contours. Water-level contours and most likely areas of movement of the plumes are shown on maps. Tests using rhodamine WT dye and dissolved solids as tracers suggested that chemical constituents in the plumes travel at different velocities as a result of dispersion and adsorlption. Chemical constituents from effluent percolating from the Old Faithful lagoons probably discharge into nearby Iron Spring Creek. Constituents from lagoons at the other three sites studied probably have not reached nearby streams or lakes. They were determined just downstream from the confluence of the three streams forming the North Branch Manitowoc River and, based on natural-flow conditions, are 0.0 cubic foot per second (0.0 cubic metre per second). Observations made in October 1974 showed that the natural discharge of the three streams forming the North Branch Manitowoc River was 0.0 cubic foot per second (0.0 cubic metre per second). A discharge of 0.30 cubic foot per second (0.008 cubic metre per second) was measured in the tributary from Hilbert but this was predominantly effluent from the sewage-treatment plant and a cheese factory in Hilbert. The mean annual discharge for the North Branch Manitowoc River at Potter is 27 cubic feet per second (0.76 cubic metre per second). Both methods require a period of concurrent data at two sites. After an estimating equation has been defined from concurrent data, the regression method requires data at the independent site only during the record voids of the dependent site. The independent site must have a complete record, however, if the ratio method is to be used.</p><p>Regression techniques were used to fill voids in the air-temperature data base and to determine the correlation of monthly and annual averages, the average annual distribution, and equations that can be used to estimate average monthly and seasonal air temperature, precipitation, and streamflow. Incomplete precipitation and streamflow records were adjusted to the 1941-70 average on the assumption that the ratio of con- current data is directly proportional to the ratio of the respective 1941-70 average annual values at nearby sites.</p><p>The average monthly air temperature at a short-term collection site generally can be approximated with a standard error of estimate of less than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius). The standard deviation of the precipitation residuals, about the averages of the estimates for all incomplete-record sites, is 0.42 inch (11 millimetres). The average annual precipitation at the 59 sites used in this analysis is 16.2 inches (411 millimetres). Two-thirds of the streamflow estimates are within 13.0 cubic feet per second (0.37 cubic metres per second) of the averages of the site estimates, which is about 10 percent of the sample average.<br></p><p>Altitude and location can be used to estimate the average annual temperature and precipitation. Schematic diagrams, plotted by computer, were prepared to show variations of altitude, temperature, and precipitation. Maps, also plotted by computer, show lines of equal altitude, precipitation, and temperature.</p><p>Average annual streamflow can be estimated on the basis of drainage area and the average annual precipitation.
