The temperature regime during the Wisconsin glacial age, from before about 45,000 years ago until about 12,000 years ago, was characterized by lower temperatures during all seasons. Wisconsin maximum (about 18,000 years before present) winter temperatures were at least 6 deg. Celsius below those of the present, and the relative decrease in summer temperature was as much as 8 deg. Celsius. The data provide evidence for a precipitation regime drier than that proposed by many studies. The maximum estimated increase in average annual precipitation during the full-glacial period is 40 percent above current precipitation. The increase in temperature signaling the end of the Wisconsin glacial age may have begun as early as about 16,000 years ago. The oldest record of desert scrub vegetation from the Nevada Test Site area dates to about 15,000 years ago. By 10,000 years before present, average annual temperatures may have approximated present values, although seasonal temperature and precipitation regimes probably differed from those of today. Climate changes during the last 10,000 years have been relatively minor variations in a warm, dry climatic regime. Probably future climatic changes include a brief but pronounced warm period within the next 500 years, followed by a protracted transition to the next glacial age during the next 10,000 years. This study has been conducted to analyze the historical and technical efforts which have been used by three geophysical contractors employing a wide variety of techniques ranging from the most simple to very elaborate 3-D surveys. In each case elaborate noise studies were conducted, and based upon their evaluation parameters were chosen for multifold CDP recording. In every case, the signal-to-noise ratio was such that no reflections were discernable. Since the reflections cannot be separated from the noise even using very elaborate noise suppression techniques and up to 384 fold multiplicity it is apparent that in this volcanic terrain reflection surveys, can not work.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr83912","collaboration":"Prepared for Nevada Operations Office, U.S. Department of Energy ","usgsCitation":"McGovern, T.F., Introduction by Pankratz, L.W., and Ackermann, H., 1983, An Evaluation of Seismic Reflection Studies in the Yucca Mountain Area, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-912, viii, 59 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83912.","productDescription":"viii, 59 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":146849,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0912/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43701,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0912/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adce4b07f02db686823","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGovern, Thomas F.","contributorId":41437,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McGovern","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170196,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Introduction by Pankratz, L. Commencing in 1967 and continuing to date (1982), extensive measurements of shear- and compressional-wave velocities have been made in five tunnel complexes in Rainier and Aqueduct Mesas and in one tunnel complex in Shoshone Mountain. The results of these surveys to 1980 are compiled in this report. In addition, extensive horizontal drilling was initiated in 1967 in connection with geologic exploration in these tunnel complexes for sites for nuclear weapons tests. Seismic and electrical surveys were conducted in the majority of these holes. The type and location of these tunnel and borehole surveys are indexed in this report. Synthesis of the seismic refraction data indicates a mean compressional-wave velocity near the nuclear device point (WP) of 23 tunnel events of 2,430 m/s (7,970 f/s) with a range of 1,846-2,753 m/s (6,060-9,030 f/s). The mean shear-wave velocity of 17 tunnel events is 1,276 m/s (4,190 f/s) with a range of 1,140-1,392 m/s (3,740-4,570 f/s). These induced compressive stresses are predicted by computer calculations, but have never been adequately confirmed by field measurements, owing primarily to the unique difficulties of obtaining such field data. Vibrating-wire stressmeter measurements made near the Mighty Epic nuclear detonation, however, qualitatively indicate that within 150 meters of the working point, permanent compressive stress increases of several megapascals were present 15 weeks after the event. Additionally, stress-change magnitudes interpreted from the stressmeter data between the 75- and 260-meter range from the working point compare favorably with calculational predictions of the stress changes believed to be present shortly after detonation of the event. The measurements and calculations differ, however, with regard to the pattern of stress change radial and transverse to the explosion source. For the range of the field measurements from the working point, computer models predict the largest compressive-stress increase to be radial to the explosion source, while the field data indicate the transverse component of. stress change to be the most compressive. The significance of time-dependent modification of the initial explosion-induced stress distribution is, however, uncertain with regard to the comparison of the field measurements and theoretical predictions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83642","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., and Kibler, J., 1983, Explosion-induced stress changes estimated from vibrating-wire stressmeter measurements near the Mighty Epic event, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-642, i, 28 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83642.","productDescription":"i, 28 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142035,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0642/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36313,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0642/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ee4b07f02db5fdea6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, William L.","contributorId":89128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"William L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kibler, J.D.","contributorId":68311,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kibler","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158230,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The measurements, made at various depths in two exploratory boreholes, suggest that the local stress field is not uniform. Estimates of the least principal stress magnitude vary over distances of a few tens of meters, with the smaller values averaging 2.9 MPa and the larger values averaging 5.5 MPa. The smaller values are in agreement with the minimum-stress magnitude of 2.8 MPa determined in a nearby drift in 1979, using an overcoring technique. Jointing in the granitic rock mass and (or) the influence of nearby faults may account for the apparent variation in minimum-stress magnitude indicated by the hydrofracture data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr83406","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., 1983, Hydraulic-fracturing measurmements in two boreholes near the Spent Fuel Test-Climax, Climax Stock, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 83-406, 17 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr83406.","productDescription":"17 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142036,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0406/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36314,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1983/0406/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699e8c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, William L.","contributorId":89128,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"William L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":158232,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During 1980, 98 teleseismic events were recorded at as many as 53 sites in this area. P-wave residuals were calculated relative to a network-wide average residual for each event and are displayed on maps of the stations for each of four event-azimuth quadrants. Fluctuations in these map-patterns of residuals with approach azimuth combined with results of linear, three-dimensional inversions of some 2887 residuals indicate the following characteristics of the velocity structure of the southern Nevada region: 1) a low-velocity body exists in the upper crust 50 km northeast of Beatty, Nevada, near the Miocene Timber Mountain-Silent Canyon caldera complex. Another highly-localized low-velocity anomaly occurs near the southwest corner of the Nevada Test Site (NTS). These two anomalies seem to be part of a low-velocity trough extending from Death Valley, California, to about 50 km north of NTS. 2) There is a high-velocity body in the mantle between 81 and 131 km deep centered about i0 km north of the edge of the Timber Mountain caldera, 3) a broad low-velocity body is delineated between 81 and 131 km deep centered about 30 km north of Las Vegas, 4) there is a monotonic increase in travel-time delays from west to east across the region, probably indicating an eastward decrease in velocity, and lower than average velocities in southeastern Nevada below 31 km, and 5) considerable complexity in three-dimensional velocity structure exists in this part of the southern Great Basin. \r\n\r\nInversions of teleseismic P-wave travel-time residuals were also performed on data from 12 seismometers in the immediate vicinity of the Nevada Test Site to make good use of the closer station spacing i in that area. Results of these inversions show more details of the velocity structure but generally the same features as those found in the regional study.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82409","usgsCitation":"Monfort, M.E., and Evans, J.R., 1982, Three-dimensional modeling of the Nevada Test Site and vicinity from teleseismic P-wave residuals: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-409, 70 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82409.","productDescription":"70 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142336,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38215,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0409/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62b857","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Monfort, Mary E.","contributorId":93491,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Monfort","given":"Mary","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161296,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Evans, John R. jrevans@usgs.gov","contributorId":529,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Evans","given":"John","email":"jrevans@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161295,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Although greater abundance of zeolite and slightly more expanded basal spacings in smectite clays suggest effects of increased hydration of material up to 50 m above the present water table, these differences might also be related to provenance of environment of deposition. L. Healey (1968), delineate two regions of steep negative gradient where Cenozoic rocks and sediments are inferred to abruptly thicken: (1) the western third of the study area where Tertiary volcanic rocks are extensively exposed and (2) the northeast corner of the area where Quaternary alluvium is exposed and where volcanic rocks are inferred to occur at depth. In the remainder of the area, a region extending contiguously from Mine Mountain northwestward through Syncline Ridge to the Eleana Range, the gravity data indicate that the Eleana Formation, where not exposed, is buried at depths of less than about 200 m, except in a limited area of exposed older Paleozoic rocks on Mine Mountain. Quaternary alluvium and Tertiary volcanic rocks are inferred to occur in this region as veneers or shallow dishes of deposit on Tippipah Limestone or Eleana Formation. Low-level aeromagnetic anomaly data, covering the western two-thirds of the study area, delineate relatively magnetic tuff units within the Tertiary volcanic rocks and provide a very attractive means for distinguishing units of normal polarization from units of reversed polarization. If used in conjunction with results of previous magnetization studies of G. D. Bath (1968), the low-level survey may prove to be an effective tool for mapping specific tuff members in the volcanic terrane. \r\n\r\nThe important question of the feasibility of discriminating high-quartz argillite from low-quartz argillite of the Eleana Formation using surface gravity data remains unresolved. If the more highly competent, denser, high-quartz phase should occur as stratigraphic units many tens of meters thick, closely spaced gravity data may reliably detect these units. If the high-quartz phase occurs only as relatively thin units, interbedded with low-quartz phase, borehole gravity surveying can be used much more effectively than equivalent surface gravity surveying.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82931","usgsCitation":"Ponce, D.A., and Hanna, W.F., 1982, Preliminary appraisal of gravity and magnetic data at Syncline Ridge, western Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-931, ii, 22 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82931.","productDescription":"ii, 22 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":392418,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_13861.htm"},{"id":38531,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0931/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143210,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0931/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","county":"Nye County","otherGeospatial":"Syncline Ridge, western Yucca Flat","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.125,\n              37\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.125,\n              37.117\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37.117\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.25,\n              37\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67ca72","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ponce, David A. 0000-0003-4785-7354 ponce@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4785-7354","contributorId":1049,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ponce","given":"David","email":"ponce@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":300,"text":"Geologic Hazards Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":161853,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hanna, William F.","contributorId":104045,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hanna","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161854,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Data from Calico Hills and Wahmonie are generally high in quality; data from Yucca Mountain are for the most part low in quality. At Calico Hills and Wahmonie, special attention was focused on the possible occurrence of a major intrusive body at depth. At Calico Hills this occurrence is supported by an inferred dome-shaped velocity interface. possibly associated with the roof of an altered phase of argillite. However, if an intrusive body is present, its top must be buried deeper than 3 km or it must be so pervasively altered that its velocity is similar to that of the calcareous argillite encountered at the bottom of drill hole DE 25a-3. At Wahmonie, the seismic data suggest the occurrence of a massive lenticular unit within 60 m of the ground surface, probably consisting of argillite but possibly consisting of intensively altered intrusive rock.\r\n\r\nAt Yucca Mountain, preliminary interpretations of the most reliable data suggest the occurrence of a major, steeply inclined velocity interface 500 m from the southwest end of the Yucca C spread. This interface may represent a major fault or erosional feature separating the Topopah Spring and Tiva Canyon Members with Paintbrush Tuff at depth. This interface is 800 m east of a previously mapped fault. On the basis of poor-quality data obtained at Yucca Mountain, the subsurface velocity distribution appears to be complex. For example, one spread near drill hole UE25 a-I suggests not only a much thicker section of Tiva but also that this material is down thrown in the valley. This may suggest faulting with throws exceeding 100 meters or an equivalent erosional feature.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr82478","collaboration":"Prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy, Nevada Operations Office","usgsCitation":"Pankratz, L.W., 1982, Reconnaissance Seismic Refraction Studies at Calico Hills, Wahmonie, and Yucca Mountain, Southwest Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-478, 31 p. **PUBLICATION PAGES ARE IN INCORRECT ORDER**, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82478.","productDescription":"31 p. **PUBLICATION PAGES ARE IN INCORRECT ORDER**","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":162930,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0478/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":85600,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0478/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117,36.5 ], [ -117,37.5 ], [ -115.5,37.5 ], [ -115.5,36.5 ], [ -117,36.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a74e4b07f02db644414","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pankratz, L. The area is underlain by clastic and carbonate rocks of Precambrian and Paleozoic age and by volcanic rocks and alluvium of Tertiary and Quaternary age that have been juxtaposed by normal and strike-slip faulting. Aquifers are composed of carbonate and volcanic rocks and alluvium. Characteristics of the flow system are determined by distribution of low-conductivity rocks (barriers); by recharge originating in the Spring Mountains, Pahranagat, Timpahute, and Sheep Ranges, and in Pahute Mesa; and by underflow beneath Pahute Mesa from Gold Flat and Kawich Valley. Discharge areas (Ash Meadows, Oasis Valley, Alkali Flat, and Furnace Creek Ranch) are upgradient from barriers. Sensitivities of simulated hydraulic heads and fluxes to variations in model parameters were calculated to guide field studies and to help estimate errors in predictions from transport modeling. Hydraulic heads and fluxes are very sensitive to variations in the greater magnitude recharge/discharge terms. Transmissivity at a location may not be the most important transmissivity for determining flux there. Transmissivities and geometries of large barriers that impede flow from Pahute Mesa have major effects on fluxes elsewhere; as their transmissivities are decreased, flux beneath western Jackass Flats and Yucca Mountains is increased as water is diverted around the barriers. Fortymile Canyon is underlain by highly transmissive rocks that cause potentiometric contours to vee upgradient; increasing their transmissivity increases flow through them, and decreases it beneath Yucca Mountain.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri824085","usgsCitation":"Waddell, R.K., 1982, Two-dimensional, steady-state model of ground-water flow, Nevada Test Site and vicinity, Nevada-California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 82-4085, Report: v, 72 p.; 1 Plate: 30.42 × 45.69 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri824085.","productDescription":"Report: v, 72 p.; 1 Plate: 30.42 × 45.69 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":410650,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35596.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":59111,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4085/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":59110,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4085/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":160413,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1982/4085/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Nevada Test Site and vicinity","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -115,\n 36.167\n ],\n [\n -115,\n 37.667\n ],\n [\n -116.917,\n 37.667\n ],\n [\n -116.917,\n 36.167\n ],\n [\n -115,\n 36.167\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afce4b07f02db6968a5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Waddell, R. These are designated the Wahmonie and Calico Hills sites. The emplacement medium at both sites was to be an inferred intrusive body at shallow depth; the inference of the presence of the body was based on aeromagnetic and regional gravity data. This report summarizes results of Schlumberger VES, induced polarization dipole-dipole traverses and magnetotelluric soundings made in the vicinity of the sites in order to characterize the geoelectric section. At the Wahmonie site VES work identified a low resistivity unit at depth surrounding the inferred intrusive body. The low resistivity unit is believed to be either the argillite (Mississippian Eleana Formation) or a thick unit of altered volcanic rock (Tertiary). Good electrical contrast is provided between the low resistivity unit and a large volume of intermediate resistivity rock correlative with the aeromagnetic and gravity data. The intermediate resistivity unit (100-200 ohm-m) is believed to be the intrusive body. The resistivity values are very low for a fresh, tight intrusive and suggest significant fracturing, alteration and possible mineralization have occurred within the upper kilometer of rock. Induced polarization data supports the VES work, identifies a major fault on the northwest side of the inferred intrusive and significant potential for disseminated mineralization within the body. The mineralization potential is particularly significant because as late as 1928, a strike of high grade silver-gold ore was made at the site.\r\n\r\nThe shallow electrical data at Calico Hills revealed no large volume high resistivity body that could be associated with a tight intrusive mass in the upper kilometer of section. A drill hole UE 25A-3 sunk to 762 m (2500 ft) at the site revealed only units of the Eleana argillite thermally metamorphosed below 396 m (1300 ft) and in part highly magnetic. Subsequent work has shown that much if not all of the magnetic and gravity anomalies can be attributed to the Eleana Formation. The alteration and doming, however, still argue for an intrusive but at greater depth than originally thought. The electrical, VES, and IP data show a complex picture due to variations in structure and alteration within the Eleana and surrounding volcanic units. These data do not suggest the presence of an intrusive in the upper kilometer of section. The magnetotelluric data however gives clear evidence for a thick, resistive body in the earth's crust below the site. While the interpreted depth is very poorly constrained due to noise and structural problems, the top of the resistive body is on the order of 2.5 km deep. The IP data also identifies area of increased polarizability at Calico Hills, which may also have future economic mineralization.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82466","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D., Chornack, M., Nervick, K., and Broker, M., 1982, Electrical studies at the proposed Wahmonie and Calico Hills nuclear waste sites, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-466, 95 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82466.","productDescription":"95 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142080,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34429,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34430,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34431,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34432,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34433,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34434,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0466/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606e50","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, D.B.","contributorId":37734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoover","given":"D.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chornack, Michael P.","contributorId":106902,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chornack","given":"Michael P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154339,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Nervick, K.H.","contributorId":49346,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nervick","given":"K.H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154337,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Broker, M. The bearing and plunge of the maximum and minimum principal stress components are, respectively: N. 56? E., 29? NE; and N. 42? W., 14? NW. The vertical stress magnitude of 7.9 MPa calculated from the overcore data is significantly less than expected from overburden pressure, suggesting the stress field is influenced by local or areal geologic factors. Results from this investigation indicate (1) the stress state at the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site deviates significantly from a gravitational stress field, both in relative stress magnitudes and in orientation; (2) numerical modeling will not realistically simulate the near-field response of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site if gravitational and (or) horizontal and vertical applied stress boundary conditions are assumed; and (3) substantial stress variations may occur spatially within the stock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82458","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., and Magner, J.E., 1982, Determination of in situ state of stress at the Spent Fuel Test-Climax site, Climax Stock, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-458, i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82458.","productDescription":"i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141088,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36312,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667709","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, W.
