This leakage rate is estimated to average about 67,000 gallons per day per square mile (100 cubic metres per day per square kilometre). Present withdrawals from the Cretaceous aquifer in the county average about 740 gallons per day per square mile (1.1 cubic metres per day per square kilometre), or about 1 percent of the amount of water available to the aquifer. Most of the withdrawals from the Cretaceous aquifer are in the Saratoga-Stantonsburg area in eastern Wilson County around which a widespread decline in water level has occurred in the aquifer. Since 1942, the rate of decline has averaged nearly 1.5 feet (0.45 metre) per year in the center of the pumping area.</p><p>Individual wells can yield as much as 500 gallons per minute (32 litres per second) in the easternmost part of the county where the aquifer is thickest, but wells pumped continually at this rate would increase the rate of water-level decline throughout the aquifer.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7660","usgsCitation":"Winner, M.D., 1976, Ground-water resources of Wilson County, North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-60, vii, 85 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7660.","productDescription":"vii, 85 p.","costCenters":[{"id":13634,"text":"South Atlantic Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":160593,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0060/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":361885,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0060/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Carolina","county":"Wilson County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-77.8278,35.8684],[-77.8206,35.8633],[-77.797,35.8551],[-77.7484,35.827],[-77.752,35.8189],[-77.7511,35.8121],[-77.7194,35.7338],[-77.6771,35.6895],[-77.668,35.6729],[-77.7009,35.6523],[-77.7535,35.616],[-77.8238,35.5729],[-77.8234,35.5856],[-77.9993,35.5859],[-78.0578,35.5978],[-78.0644,35.5857],[-78.1284,35.6035],[-78.1641,35.6953],[-78.1632,35.7107],[-78.1693,35.7149],[-78.1738,35.7163],[-78.1771,35.72],[-78.1822,35.7214],[-78.1855,35.7247],[-78.1871,35.7292],[-78.1922,35.7302],[-78.1887,35.7347],[-78.1812,35.7387],[-78.1482,35.7454],[-78.0015,35.8066],[-77.9,35.8429],[-77.8729,35.8601],[-77.8446,35.8374],[-77.8368,35.8518],[-77.8278,35.8684]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Wilson\",\"state\":\"NC\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65d4ec","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Winner, M. Water-quality variables investigated were discharge, temperature, major chemical constituents, selected trace metals, specific conductance, suspended sediment, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH , total alkalinity, carbon dioxide, total organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, algal growth potential, coliform bacteria, periphyton, and benthic invertebrates. Results indicate that water in the reach of the Merced River studied is a dilute system of good quality. Mean concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus were highest in the Merced River at Rancheria Flat. Algal growth potential tests revealed that phosphorus was limiting algal growth at Happy Isles Bridge, El Capitan Bridge, and South Fork Merced River, which nitrogen was limiting it at Rancheria Flat. Input of excessive nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the Merced River during the summer low-flow period, and mixing with warm tributary inflow could cause excessive algal growth and production. An additional 10 to 15 million acre-feet (12,000 to 18,000 cubic hectometers) containing 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids is estimated to be available for use in the future with appropriate desalinization. \r\n\r\nLower Cretaceous rocks crop out from Washington County on the north to Comanche County on-the south. The rocks dip from a structural high in the southwest part of the State to structural lows in the northwest and north-central part. Depth below land surface increases generally northwestward to about 2,600 feet (790 meters); thickness of the rocks increases westward, nearly zero to about 850 feet (260 meters). The rocks consist chiefly of marine to nonmarine shale and silt- stone interbedded with coastal to deltaic sandstone. The interbedded sandstone, which composes about one-third of the rocks, consists of one or more lenses that thicken westward to about 400 feet (120 meters) in the central part of western Kansas.\r\n\r\nThe yield of water to individual wells is related to areal extent, thickness, and interconnection of the sand lenses and to grain size and cementation of the sand. Large amounts of water may be pumped by wells where loosely cemented sand lenses are interconnected. Wells commonly yield adequate supplies for domestic and stock use; reported yields from municipal and irrigation wells range from about 100 to 2,000 gallons per minute (6 to 125 liters per second). \r\n\r\nRecharge to the Lower Cretaceous-rocks occurs in the area of outcrop and from hydraulically connected saturated Cenozoic rocks, especially in the southern part of the State. Movement of water is principally northeastward from areas of recharge to areas of discharge where streams intersect the sandstone outcrops. \r\n\r\nWater in the sandstone aquifers commonly is confined between beds of relatively impermeable shale, causing water in wells to rise above the top of the aquifer. Water levels fluctuate in response to changes in atmospheric pressure, recharge, and discharge; greatest fluctuations result from discharge to wells for municipal and irrigation use. Progressive declines in water levels have occurred where irrigation withdrawals exceed recharge. \r\n\r\nCalcium bicarbonate water is dominant near recharge areas; mixed sodium and calcium bicarbonate water and sodium chloride water become successively dominant as the water moves downgradient from the recharge areas. The quality of water ranges from fresh to very saline (less than 1.000 to 35,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids). In the areas of generally fresh water, localized areas of calcium sulfate water result from solution of gypsum in the Kiowa Formation, and areas of sodium chloride water result from contamination by oil-field brines.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76776","usgsCitation":"Keene, K.M., and Bayne, C.K., 1976, Groundwater from Lower Cretaceous rocks in Kansas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-776, 64 leaves :ill. maps (some col., 3 fold.) ;28 cm.; (4 sheets, scale 1:1,000,000 - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76776.","productDescription":"64 leaves :ill. maps (some col., 3 fold.) ;28 cm.; (4 sheets, scale 1:1,000,000 - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141191,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37515,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37516,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37517,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37518,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37519,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0776/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"1000000","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635ce5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Keene, Katherine M.","contributorId":17994,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Keene","given":"Katherine","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160256,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bayne, Charles Knight","contributorId":35313,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bayne","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Knight","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160257,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The hole is located 41 km west-northwest of Charleston near Clubhouse Corners, Figure 1, directly over a gravity and magnetic high and the possible hypocenter of the 1889 Charleston earthquake. Drilling began January 13, 1975, and the hole penetrated 750 meters of Cenozoic and Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks finally bottoming in 42 meters of amygdaloidal basalts. Core recovery was 70% in sedimentary formations and 100% in the basalts. Detailed systematic studies of the core and the area surrounding the borehole were presented at the Symposium: Geology and Geophysics of Charleston, South Carolina, Area, held at the annual meeting of the Northeastern and Southeastern sections of the Geological Society of America during the week of March 25-27, 1976. RADB has been constructed such that a complete sample description (location, rock type, etc.), literature citation, and extensive analytical data are linked to form an independent record for each sample reported in a published work. Analytical data pertinent to the potassium-argon, rubidium-strontium, uranium-thorium-lead, lead-alpha, and fission-track methods can be accommodated, singly or in combinations, for each record. \r\n\r\nData processing is achieved using the GIPSY program (University of Oklahoma) which maintains the data file and builds, updates, searches, and prints the records using simple yet versatile command statements. Searching and selecting records is accomplished by specifying the presence, absence, or (numeric or alphabetic) value of any element of information in the data bank, and these specifications can be logically linked to develop sophisticated searching strategies. Output is available in the form of complete data records, abbreviated tests, or columnar tabulations. Samples of data-reporting forms, GIPSY command statements, output formats, and data records are presented to illustrate the comprehensive nature and versatility of the Radiometric Age Data Bank.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr76674","usgsCitation":"Zartman, R.E., Cole, J., and Marvin, R.F., 1976, User's guide to the Radiometric Age Data Bank (RADB): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-674, [1], 77 leaves :ill. ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76674.","productDescription":"[1], 77 leaves :ill. ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144803,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0674/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39686,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0674/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a16e4b07f02db603e87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zartman, Robert Eugene","contributorId":15624,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zartman","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"Eugene","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163746,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cole, J. It was found, for the standard (30 Hz) NCER multiplex system, that subtractive compensation utilizing a 4688 Hz reference signal multiplexed onto each data track was more effective than that utilizing a 3125 Hz reference signal recorded separately on a different track. Moreover, it was found that the portion of the spectrum between the uppermost data channel (3060 Hz + or - 125 Hz) and the compensation reference signal (4688 Hz) could be used to record an additional timing signal, with a center frequency of 3700 Hz and a broader playback bandwidth (ca 0 to 100 Hz) than that of the standard data channels. Accordingly, for the tests described in that report, the standard 8-datachannel multiplex system was augmented by one additional timing channel with a center frequency of 3700 Hz. The 3700 Hz discriminator used in those tests was not successfully set up to utilize subtractive compensation; so its output from a tape playback was quite noisy.\r\n\r\nSubsequently, further tests have been carried out on the application of subtractive compensation to a 4-channel broad-band multiplex system and to the standard multiplex system, both recorded on field tape recorders with relatively poor tape speed control (2), (3). In the course of these experiments, it was discovered that two separate timing channe1s, not just one, can be inserted between the uppermost data channel and the compensation reference signal, Furthermore, it was possible to adjust the discriminators used to playback these timing channels so that they profited significantly from subtractive compensation even though the playback bandwidth was 0 to 100 Hz (for short rise times of square wave timing signals). The advantages of recording two timing signals on each data track include:\r\n\r\n1) one standard time signal to be used for critical timing, e.g. IRIG E, can be recorded with the data on each track, eliminating any problem that might arise from tape head misalignment if the timing base were recorded on a separate track from the data signals being timed,\r\n\r\n2) other essential timing signals e.g. WWVB and IRIG C, can each be recorded on several tracks, to insure more reliable recording through redundancy, without displacing data from standard data channels,\r\n\r\n3) the broader playback bandwidth of the special timing channels reproduces the sharp-edged timing codes with much less distortion than is obtained from the standard data channels.\r\n\r\nIn order to implement subtractive compensation with the 4688 Hz multiplexed signal and to record timing signals on the proposed special timing channels, it was necessary to design and build a signal generator/multiplexer unit. The functions of this unit are:\r\n\r\n1) generate a stable (x-tal controlled) compensation reference frequency (4688 Hz),\r\n\r\n2) generate two timing channel subcarriers (3500 Hz and 3950 Hz) and provide for their modulation by appropriate timing signals,\r\n\r\n3) separately, for each of th~14 tape tracks, adjust the relative levels of the timing and compensation subcarriers and multiplex them, at the appropriate level, with the incoming multiplexed data signals for introduction to the tape system direct record amplifiers. These units will be described in detail by Gray Jensen, who designed and built them, as well as being shown diagrammatically in this report.\r\n\r\nThis report continues the work described in reference (1), and it should be read as a supplement to that report rather than as an independent effort. It introduces changes in the multiplex system and test circuits employed in the tests and then repeats the tests from the earlier report that are required to illustrate the characteristics of the modified system. Because of its simplicity and the ease with which it can be adapted for the purpose, the PI 5100 field recorder should be considered for such use. In the tests described here, a PI 5100 was speeded up to run at 15/16 inches per second (ips) and signals from the standard multiplex system test modulator bank were recorded on one tape track by means of a simple, improvised AM record amplifier. The results of these tests are extremely encouraging: the dynamic range of the system when played back on the Bell and Howell Model 3700 B reproduce machine, with subtractive compensation, is nearly as high as for the system employing the B&H 3700 B for recording. \r\n\r\nThese notes indicate the principle employed to speed up the recorder, outline the circuit required to drive the tape heads in the AM record mode, and describe the tests carried out to evaluate the system's performance.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA.","doi":"10.3133/ofr76252","usgsCitation":"Eaton, J.P., 1976, 15/16 ips Operation of the Precision Instrument Company Model P15100 tape recorder to record the standard (30 Hz) NCER seismic data multiplex system: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-252, ii, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr76252.","productDescription":"ii, 32 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":379,"text":"Menlo Park Science Center","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":145444,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/OFR_76_252.gif"},{"id":257327,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0252/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd490de4b0b290850eed6b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eaton, Jerry P.","contributorId":22341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eaton","given":"Jerry","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167837,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
