Since ground water is the only source of water for irrigation in the Albin area, 34 irrigation wells have been drilled since 1968 and developed in conjunction mostly with center-pivot sprinkler systems that in 1974 irrigated about 6,980 acres. Most irrigation wells are developed in channel deposits of the Ogallala Formation of late Miocene. Water levels in parts of these channel deposits have declined about 4 to 7 feet since pumping began in 1968. In the La Grange area, lands are irrigated by surface water, ground water or a combination of both. The best producing wells are those completed in both the Brule Formation of Oligocene age and the alluvium. Secondary porosity was located and elevated in the Brule using caliper logs, an Acoustic Borehole Televiewer and geophysical logs. From the spring of 1970 to the spring of 1974, hydrographs of wells in parts of the La Grange area show water-level rises of about 5 feet resulting from the net effect of surface-water recharge and groundwater pumpage. Throughout the La Grange area no significant annual water-table declines have occurred. It is unlikely that irrigation wells pumping near Horse Creek have caused significant direct streamflow depletion.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri76118","usgsCitation":"Borchert, W.B., 1976, Geohydrology of the Albin and La Grange areas, aoutheastern Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-118, Report: v, 72 p.; 6 Plates: 33.00 x 27.25 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri76118.","productDescription":"Report: v, 72 p.; 6 Plates: 33.00 x 27.25 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":5050,"text":"WY-MT Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":411732,"rank":9,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35026.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":55066,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55065,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55062,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55061,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55067,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":118958,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":55063,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":55064,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0118/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Albin and La Grande areas","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.565\n ],\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.317\n ],\n [\n -104.057,\n 41.317\n ],\n [\n -104.057,\n 41.565\n ],\n [\n -104.482,\n 41.565\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a89dd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Borchert, W. Results of analyses of those programs and ancillary data are presented in : (1) A table (matrix) which has been designed for the notation and elaboration of information pertaining to the mined-area reclamation programs of the 50 States; (2) a primer on surface mining activities and related reclamation practices and problems; and (3) a listing of types of non-Federal governmental controls applicable to reclamation. Interpretations of the status and content of State programs suggest that although a common thread runs through State statutory language, administrative requirements vary from State to State in order to meet different natural, economic, social, and political considerations. A general trend is seen in State programs toward the requiring of an integration of landuse planning and mine planning, with increased local governmental involvement.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir731","usgsCitation":"Imhoff, E.A., Friz, T.O., and LaFevers, J.R., 1976, A guide to State programs for the reclamation of surface mined areas: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 731, v, 33 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir731.","productDescription":"v, 33 p.","numberOfPages":"37","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":139699,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":330786,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/0731/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae52b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Imhoff, Edgar A.","contributorId":78319,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Imhoff","given":"Edgar","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":149413,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Friz, Thomas O.","contributorId":84354,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Friz","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":149414,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"LaFevers, James R.","contributorId":85953,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaFevers","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":149415,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

About 45 miles (72 kilometers) of profile were made on the Caloosahatchee River Estuary and San Carlos Bay. Two different acoustic energy sources, a high resolution boomer and a 45-electrode high resolution sparker, both having a power input of 300 joules, were used to obtain both adequate penetration and good resolution. The seismic profiles show that much of the strata of middle Miocene to Holocene age apparently are extensively folded but not faulted. Initial interpretations indicate that: (1) the top of the Hawthorn Formation (which contains the upper Hawthorn aquifer) has much relief due chiefly to apparent folding; (2) the limestone, sandstone, and unconsolidated sand and phosphorite, which together compose the sandstone aquifer, appear to be discontinuous; (3) the green clay unit of the Tamiami Formation contains large scale angular beds dipping eastward; and (4) numerous deeply cut alluvium-filled paleochannels underlie the Caloosahatchee River. In general, pumpage has increased at an irregular rate since the completion of the first well to this aquifer in 1886. These withdrawals are responsible for an almost continuous decline of water levels in wells throughout the Memphis area. Water-level data indicate that over the years a broad, regional cone of depression has developed in the potentiometric surface of the Memphis Sand and is centered near downtown Memphis. Areally smaller, subsidiary cones are superimposed upon this regional cone in areas heavily pumped by municipal and industrial wells. Pumpage from the Memphis Sand in Shelby County, Tenn., was 188 Mgal/d (million gallons per day) or 712 Ml/d (million litres per day) in 1975, although a maximum of 190 Mgal/d (719 Ml/d) was reached in 1974.
\n
Pumpage from the Fort Pillow Sand (\"1,400-foot\" sand) began in 1924 and increased at a yearly rate of about 0.6 Mgal/d (2.3 Ml/d) until 1942. From 1943 to 1962, pumpage averaged about 11.5 Mgal/d (43.5 Ml/d), then was reduced as MLGW (Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division) discontinued wells that became unserviceable. MLGW ceased pumping from the aquifer in 1974, and pumpage from the remaining industrial wells in Shelby County in 1975 was 4.4 Mgal/d (16.6 Ml/d). Water levels in the Fort Pillow Sand generally have risen since 1963. Water l evels in the aquifers in the Memphis area fluctuate inversely with changes in pumping. Analysis of observation-well and pumpage data indicates that local water levels can be altered by changing the pumping rates or by varying the areal distribution of pumping.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri7667","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Memphis, Memphis Light,  Gas and Water Division","usgsCitation":"Criner, J.H., and Parks, W.S., 1976, Historic water-level changes and pumpage from the principal aquifers of the Memphis area, Tennessee: 1886-1975: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 76-67, iv, 45 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri7667.","productDescription":"iv, 45 p.","numberOfPages":"54","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1886-01-01","temporalEnd":"1975-01-01","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157812,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri7667.jpg"},{"id":313231,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1976/0067/report.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"Tennessee","city":"Memphis","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              35.62046556900037\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.1046142578125,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.42984008789062,\n              34.89268966339912\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db6885c5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Criner, James H.","contributorId":107258,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Criner","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196841,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Parks, William Scott","contributorId":52148,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Parks","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"Scott","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":196840,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Since the mid-1950 's dissolved oxygen quality has gradually improved owing to low-flow augmentation, the achievement of basinwide secondary treatment, and the use of other waste-management practices. As a result, summer dissolved-oxygen levels have increased, salmon runs have returned, and the overall effort is widely regarded as a singular water-quality success. To document the improved dissolved-oxygen regimen, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted intensive studies of the Willamette during the summer low-flow seasons of 1973 and 1974. During each summer the mean daily dissolved-oxygen levels were found to be higher than 5 milligrams per liter throughout the river. Because of the basinwide secondary treatment, carbonaceous deoxygenation rates were low. In addition, almost half of the biochemical oxygen demand entering the Willamette was from diffuse (nonpoint) sources rather than outfalls. These results indicated that point-source biochemical oxygen demand was no longer the primary cause of dissolved-oxygen depletion. Instead, the major causes of deoxygenation were nitrification in a shallow ' surface active ' reach below Salem and an anomalous oxygen demand (believed to be primarily of benthal origin) in Portland Harbor.
