Below about 7,000 feet altitude, the precipitation was mostly rain; above that altitude, it was mostly snow. Although the rate of fall was moderate, at least 4 inches of rain or as much as 4 feet of snow accumulated in some places. Sustained precipitation falling at a moderate rate thoroughly saturated the ground and by midday Sunday sent most of the smaller streams into flood stage. The South Platte River and its major tributaries began to flood by late Sunday evening and early Monday morning. \r\n\r\nGeologic and hydrologic processes activated by the May 5-6 storm caused extensive damage to lands and to manmade structures in the Greater Denver area. Damage was generally most intense in areas where man had modified the landscape--by channel constrictions, paving, stripping of vegetation and topsoil, and oversteepening of hillslopes. Roads, bridges, culverts, dams, canals, and the like were damaged or destroyed by erosion and sedimentation. Streambanks and structures along them were scoured. Thousands of acres of croplands, pasture, and developed urban lands were coated with mud and sand. Flooding was intensified by inadequate storm sewers, blocked drains, and obstructed drainage courses. Saturation of hillslopes along the Front Range caused rockfalls, landslides, and mudflows as far west as Berthoud Pass. Greater attention to geologic conditions in land-use planning, design, and construction would minimize storm damage in the future.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/cir689","usgsCitation":"Hansen, W.R., 1973, Effects of the May 5-6, 1973, storm in the Greater Denver area, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 689, iii, 20 p. :illus. ;26 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir689.","productDescription":"iii, 20 p. :illus. ;26 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124696,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1973/0689/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30907,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1973/0689/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a27e4b07f02db610541","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hansen, Wallace R.","contributorId":90273,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hansen","given":"Wallace","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":147696,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The area is also one of diverse geologic and hydrologic conditions. \r\n\r\nAs used in this report, the Eugene-Springfield area covers about 450 square miles and includes a part of the lower foothills of the Coast and Cascade Ranges and a strip of the main valley plain of the southern Willamette Valley. Volcanic and sedimentary rock units exposed in the foothills range in age from Eocene to Miocene. In the main valley plain the older units are overlain by Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial deposits. Marine-deposited sandstone, siltstone, shale, and mudstone of the older sedimentary units are fine grained and poorly permeable and yield water slowly to wells. The volcanic rocks, primarily of dacitic and andesitic composition, yield small quantities of water that are generally adequate only for domestic use. The alluvial deposits (sand and gravel) of the valley plain (central lowland) contain the most productive aquifers in the area and are considered to be the only ground-water reservoir for which large-scale development of ground-water supplies is feasible. \r\n\r\nAquifers in the area are recharged principally by direct infiltration of precipitation. Most of the precipitation, which averages about 4C inches per year, occurs during late autumn and winter. Minimum recharge by infiltration of precipitation to the alluvial aquifers beneath the valley plain is estimated to be about 100,000 acre-feet. Ground water is discharged naturally from the central lowland by seepage and spring flow to small streams, by subsurface outflow to adjacent areas, and by evapotranspiration. \r\n\r\nStorage capacity of the central lowland in the Eugene-Springfield area is estimated to be about 2.1 million acre-feet in the zone 10-150 feet below land surface. The quantity of ground water available annually from this area is far greater than the 23,000 acre-feet pumped for all uses in 1968. This pumpage was about 23 percent of the perennial yield (100,000 acre-ft), and about 77,000 acre-feet of water was left available for additional withdrawal. If annual withdrawals of water were increased to 100,000 acre-feet per year, the levels in the ground-water reservoir would be lowered. Once new equilibriums are established, increased withdrawals could be accommodated without progressive losses in aquifer storage or excessive losses in flow of the larger streams. \r\n\r\nGround water from the alluvial deposits of the valley plain is chemically suitable for irrigation and other uses, as is most of the water obtained from perched-water bodies in the sedimentary and volcanic rocks. However, the mineral content of water from the older sedimentary rocks, particularly from deeper producing zones, is greater than the mineral content of water from the alluvial deposits. Locally, some of the water from the older rocks is too saline for most uses. \r\n\r\nIncreased use of ground water may result in certain problems pertaining to waste-disposal practices, local overdraft of aquifers, well interference, and well construction. Present data are adequate to evaluate some of the factors relating to foreseeable problems but allow only tentative conclusions to be drawn about other factors, which include local direction of flow, rate of ground-water movement, and areas of possible ground-water contamination. Additional information obtained through systematic study will be needed to deal with these problems.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp2018","usgsCitation":"Frank, F.J., 1973, Ground water in the Eugene-Springfield area, southern Willamette Valley, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2018, Report: v, 65 p.; 3 Plates: 28.00 x 40.64 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2018.","productDescription":"Report: v, 65 p.; 3 Plates: 28.00 x 40.64 inches or smaller","costCenters":[{"id":518,"text":"Oregon Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26471,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2018/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26470,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2018/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26472,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2018/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137291,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2018/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":413983,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_25502.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":26469,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2018/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Eugene-Springfield area, southern Willamette Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -123.384,\n 44.25\n ],\n [\n -123.384,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -122.871,\n 44\n ],\n [\n -122.871,\n 44.25\n ],\n [\n -123.384,\n 44.25\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d9ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Frank, F. Water from crystalline rocks and shale is relatively expensive. Water from sandstone is less so. Costs of water from sands and gravels in glaciated areas and from Coastal Plain sediments range from moderate to very low. In carbonate rocks costs range from low to fairly high. \r\n\r\nThe cost of ground water at the wellhead is low in areas of productive aquifers, but owing to the cost of connecting pipe, costs increase significantly in multiple-well fields. In the North Atlantic Region, development of small to moderate supplies of ground water may offer favorable cost alternatives to planners, but large supplies of ground water for delivery to one point cannot generally be developed inexpensively. Well fields in the less productive aquifers may be limited by costs to 1 or 2 million gallons a day, but in the more favorable aquifers development of several tens of millions of gallons a day may be practicable and inexpensive. \r\n\r\nCost evaluations presented cannot be applied to any one specific well or specific site because yields of wells in any one place will depend on the local geologic and hydrologic conditions; however, with such cost adjustments as may be necessary, the methodology presented should have wide applicability. Data given show the cost of water at the wellhead based on the average yield of several wells. The cost of water delivered by a well field includes costs of connecting pipe and of wells that have the yields and spacings specified. Cost of transport of water from the well field to point of consumption and possible cost of treatment are not evaluated. \r\n\r\nIn the methodology employed, costs of drilling and testing, pumping equipment, engineering for the well field, amortization at 5% percent interest, maintenance, and cost of power are considered. \r\n\r\nThe report includes an analysis of test drilling costs leading to a production well field. The discussion shows that test drilling is a relatively low cost item and that more than a minimum of test holes in a previously unexplored area is, above all, simple insurance in keeping down costs and may easily result in final lower costs for the system. \r\n\r\nUse of the jet drill for testing is considered short sighted and may result in higher total costs and possibly failure to discover good aquifers. \r\n\r\nEconomic development of ground water supplies will depend on obtaining qualified hydrologic and engineering advice, on carrying out adequate test drilling, and on utilizing high-quality (at times, more costly) material.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. The tract is a relatively flat, low-lying, generally sandy area containing shallowly incised streams. The larger streams are commonly bordered by swamps. The tract was purchased by the State primarily as a water-supply preserve, but also for conservation and recreational purposes.
\n
Mean streamflow at three continuous record gaging stations in the Wharton Tract is: Mullica River near Batsto (46.1-square mile drainage area), 6 mgd (million gallons per day); Batsto River at Batsto (70.5-square mile drainage area), 81 mgd; Oswego River at Harrisville (64.0-square mile drainage area), 55 mgd. Thus mean discharge from this 180.6-sq mi (square mile) area is 202 mgd or 1.12 mgd per sq mi.
\n
Principal aquifers in the Wharton Tract and Mullic River basin are in the Kirkwood Formation of middle Miocene age, Cohansey Sand of Miocene(?) and Pliocene(?) age, and in overlying hydraulically connected deposits of Quaternary age.
\n
The Kirkwood Formation is composed of sand, silt, and clay. Diverse lithologies represent deposition in different environments such as nearshore marine, barrier bar, lagoonal, estuarine, and tidal marsh. Hydraulic characteristics of the Kirkwood in the Mullica River basin are virtually unknown. Most Kirkwood aquifers in the basin are believed to be hydraulically connected with the overlying Cohansey Sand.
\n
The Cohansey Sand is dominantly a quartz sand containing minor amounts of pebbly sand, silty sand, and interbedded clay. Almost all of the Wharton Tract and most of the Mullica River basin lie within the sandier area of the Cohansey, which contains approximately 75 percent sand beds and 25 percent silt and clay beds. Data from test drilling show that the upper 100 feet of sediments in the Wharton Tract contain about 93 percent sand beds, 3.5 percent clay beds, and 3.5 percent silt beds. The Cohansey in the Tract ranges in thickness from less than 50 feet to about 180 feet; the average thickness is about 125 feet.
\n
The Cohansey Sand is believed to be, in overall aspect, a deltaic deposit. It contains materials that were deposited locally in nearshore-marine, fluvial, estuarine, lagoonal, and beach environments.
\n
The hydraulic conductivity of Cohansey aquifer material ranges from about 90 to 250 feet per day (660 to 1,885 gallons per day per square foot) in southern New Jersey. One aquifer test in the Wharton Tract gives an average value of 130 feet per day (1,000 gallons per day per square foot). The transmissivity of the Cohansey Sand aquifer through most of the Wharton Tract is typically between 10,000 and 20,000 square feet per day (75,000 and 150,000 gallons per day per foot).
\n
Deposits of Quaternary age form a discontinuous veneer lying unconformably above the Cohansey Sand. The most important hydrologic function of most of these deposits is to absorb precipitation and transmit the water to the underlying Cohansey Sand. Thicker deposits of estuarine sand and clay of the Cape May Formation fill a channel in the underlying Cohansey Sand along the lower reaches of the Mullica River. This channel deposit is 85 feet thick near Batsto.
\n
Ground water and surface water in the Mullica River basin are low in dissolved solids, generally less than 50 mg/1 (milligrams per liter). Iron concentrations are generally high, up to 49,000 micrograms per liter (49 mg/1) in ground water and up to 7,100 micrograms per liter (7.1 mg/1) in the streams. The water is acidic as indicated by typical pH values of from 4.5 to 6.5. Color of the surface water is commonly high, ranging from 3 - 150 platinum-cobalt units. After appropriate treatment these waters are acceptable for most uses.
\n
The Wharton Tract is well situated to support the growing water needs of nearby New Jersey communities. Maximum development of water can be achieved by conjunctive use of ground and surface water. During most of the year, some water would be withdrawn either directly from streams or from adjacent wells. During periods of low flow during summer or fall water would be pumped from wells farther from the stream~. From analysis of flow-duration curves it is estimated that 70 mgd of water could be developed with minimal effect upon low flows in the half of the tract above the gaging stations on the Mullica and Batsto Rivers. The quantity available in the entire tract is greater, possibly in the order of 150 mgd. With augmentation of streamflow by pumping from ground water, it is likely that considerably more water could be safely used on a perennial basis.
\n
A possibility exists for multiple use of the water resources of the Mullica River through construction of an inexpensive tide barrier at the Garden State Parkway. This would create a fresh water lake in a State forest, park, and recreational area, which would also provide a flexible and economical water supply for much of the Atlantic coastal resort development.
","language":"English","publisher":"State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Resources","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Rhodehamel, E.C., 1973, Geology and water resources of the Wharton Tract and the Mullica River basin in southern New Jersey: Special Report 36, 58 p.","productDescription":"58 p.","numberOfPages":"65","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287918,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287917,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70106983/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","otherGeospatial":"Mullica River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -75.7768,38.8517 ], [ -75.7768,40.7423 ], [ -73.8448,40.7423 ], [ -73.8448,38.8517 ], [ -75.7768,38.8517 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"537b27f4e4b0929ba496ab78","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rhodehamel, Edward C.","contributorId":38135,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rhodehamel","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":493827,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Some wastes require only temporary containment, whereas others must be isolated for indefinitely long periods. The means and locale for emplacement underground depend upon many governing geological factors, including the physical, chemical, hydrological, and hydraulic properties of the host formation. These must be studied relative to the physical, chemical, and thermal properties of the waste and of potential interactions between the waste and the host formation. Thorough knowledge is essential because lack of it may lead to undesirable or disastrous environmental consequences. Such surface features as sinks, long dry valleys, sparse streams, and bare rock and such subsurface features as caverns, arterial solution openings leading to large springs, and a deep water table are typical of karst terranes. These features result in an uneven distribution of permeability in karst systems and surface and subsurface hydrologic conditions that require special hydrogeologic studies. Local high permeability at shallow depth in mature karst regions leads to an ecology associated with a soilless and water-scarce surface environment. Many practical problems result from this high permeability, including: (1) scarcity and poor predictability of groundwater supplies; (2) scarcity of surface-water supplies; (3) instability of the ground; (4) leakage of surface reservoirs; and (5) an unreliable waste-disposal environment.

Interest in karst hydrology has increased greatly in the past decade; this interest has resulted in the international exchange of numerous published reports on local areas and on special topical karst problems. Many of these reports have been used by the authors in preparing this paper, which synthesizes results of many workers and focuses attention on: (1) the development of karst features through hydrologic processes; and (2) hydrologic systems of karst terranes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0022-1694(73)90034-6","usgsCitation":"LeGrand, H.E., and Stringfield, V.T., 1973, Karst hydrology: A review: Journal of Hydrology, v. 20, no. 2, p. 97-120, https://doi.org/10.1016/0022-1694(73)90034-6.","productDescription":"24 p.","startPage":"97","endPage":"120","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414792,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"20","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LeGrand, H. As regulators of water movement in the hydrological cycle, these reservoirs surpass all lakes combined, natural and manmade. While many aquifers are not well understood, data on many others are adequate for long‐range broad‐scale planning. An example is the basalt aquifer of the Snake River Plain in Idaho. However, the area has managerial problems which concern the time, the place and the feasibility of manipulations of water. All continents of the world contain great aquifers. For every huge aquifer, however, hundreds of smaller ones occur, and even these contain astonishing amounts of water. Aquifers in the Ohio River Basin of the United States are good examples. Management of total water resources is a difficult problem at many places. But many problems could be met and many water shortages alleviated or eliminated by use of aquifers, not merely as sources of water, but as reservoirs for management of water.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1752-1688.1973.tb01707.x","issn":"1093474X","usgsCitation":"Nace, R.L., 1973, Ground  water in perspective: JAWRA, v. 9, no. 1, p. 18-24, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1752-1688.1973.tb01707.x.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"18","endPage":"24","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":370204,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States ","state":"Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain ","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.26806640625,\n              47.62097541515849\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.08056640625,\n              44.94924926661153\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.1572265625,\n              44.26093725039923\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.61914062499999,\n              43.89789239125797\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.21337890625,\n              43.24520272203356\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.12597656249999,\n              42.97250158602597\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.73095703125,\n              44.11914151643737\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.29150390625,\n              42.5530802889558\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.27001953125,\n              42.08191667830631\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.3251953125,\n              42.69858589169842\n            ],\n            [\n              -107.666015625,\n              43.43696596521823\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.65478515625,\n              44.731125592643274\n            ],\n            [\n              -109.77539062499999,\n              46.14939437647686\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.36865234374999,\n              47.68018294648414\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.19238281249999,\n              48.04870994288686\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.26806640625,\n              47.62097541515849\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"9","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2007-06-08","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nace, R. Data from such surveys can be used as the basis for more detailed observations from aircraft and on the ground to guide resource exploration, development, and conservation activities.

The value of earth resource observations from space has been demonstrated by the practical use of photographs from the Gemini and Apollo spaceflights and particularly by a series of multispectral photographs taken during the flight of Apollo 9. The analysis of those photographs has shown that the performance of the planned Earth Resources Technology Satellite will meet the needs of the resource and environmental community for small-scale repetitive images of the earth in the visible and solar infrared portions of the spectrum and has provided a limited base of material for earth scientists to work with in order to ready themselves for the ERTS data.

The validity of earth resource observations from space can be derived by analogy from the successively closer observations of the moon, culminating in repeated physical sampling of the moon's surface. The method of inductive reasoning and analysis used for the moon is the opposite of the normal deductive analysis used on the earth. Adoption of the inductive methods and reasoning for earth observations will provide a framework of broad observations and conclusions leading to the identification of target areas for more detailed observation and will, in time, reduce the costs and time required for surveys dealing with resource and environmental problems.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/02626667309494008","usgsCitation":"Robinove, C.J., 1973, Value and validity of earth resources observations from space: Hydrological Sciences Bulletin, v. 18, no. 1, p. 63-67, https://doi.org/10.1080/02626667309494008.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"63","endPage":"67","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":414785,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"18","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robinove, Charles J.","contributorId":16983,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinove","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":867762,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Because the proposed pipeline route lies within many stream channels, one of the obvious hydrologic hazards is channel erosion. It was considered a major hazard in a report by Hadley (1969) after a short reconnaissance of the proposed pipeline route and also in a national assessment of water resources by the Water Resources Council (1968). The U.S. Department of Interior has also recognized the channel erosion problems in considering the environmental impacts of TAPS and has stipulated conditions for their control (U.S. Dept. of Interior, 1972a, b).
