The </span><span>atlas was prepared in cooperation with the Water Management District to </span><span>provide pertinent water-quality information relating to the objectives </span><span>of the Florida State Water Resources Act of 1972. Under the provisions </span><span>of this act, the Water Management District is required to establish a </span><span>regional water-use plan, issue permits for water-use and water-resources </span><span>related construction, and authorize the export of water. The data </span><span>presented on these maps will be useful to those concerned with water </span><span>management and use, in assessing regional water quality, and in estab</span><span>lishing a base for comparison with future quality data.</span></p><p><span>The ranges of concentration shown on the maps represent maximum concentrations in surface water during the sampling period, January 1965-September 1970. Concentrations are plotted at the sampling sites and are the major criteria for determining the extent of concentration ranges. In some cases the drainage basin boundaries are used in defining concentration range boundaries because the quantity and quality of surface runoff is characteristic of the environment of the basin and may be entirely different from the runoff of adjacent basins. Within drainage basins, individual streams and local drainage divides define concentration boundaries. Some areas, although adjacent to each other in the same basin, have entirely different concentration ranges. For example, an area containing dissolved-solids concentrations in the 0-25 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) range may be adjacent to an area in which concentrations exceed 100 mg/1, as in the southwest part of Escambia County. Concentration boundaries in these areas were selected by extending each range about halfway between the two sampling sites, as opposed to grading an intermediate range between them without supporting data. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The area covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Firth quadrangle. No flooding occurred downstream from American Falls Reservoir. The inundated areas and maximum water-surface elevations are shown in a series of 17 hydrologic atlases. The aea covered by the atlases extends from Teton Dam downstream to American Falls Reservoir, a distance of 100 miles. The extent of flooding shown on the maps was obtained by field inspections and aerial photographs made during and immediately after the flood. There may be small isolated areas within the boundaries shown that were not flooded, but the identification of these sites was beyond the scope of the study. The elevation data shown are mean-sea-level elevations of high-water marks identified in the field. This particular map (in the 17-map series) shows conditions in the Moreland quadrangle. Major sources of ground water are the Gosport Sand and Lisbon Formation undifferentiated, the Miocene Series undifferentiated, and alluvium and low terrace deposits. The Miocene, the most productive source of ground water, will yield 0.5 to 1.0 mgd (million gallons per day) per well and is a potential source of larger supplies in most of the county. The quantity of potable water available is governed largely by geologic structures. Average flows of the Tombigbee and Mobile Rivers in the southeast corner of the county are 18,200 and 39,400 mgd. Average runoff originating in the county is about 1,100 mgd or 1 mgd per square mile. Water in aquifers tapped by wells generally contains less than 500 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids. The water generally is soft to moderately hard. Water in streams is soft to moderately hard and low in dissolved solids. Estimated water use in 1966 was 43.5 mgd of which 10.9 mgd was ground water and 32.6 mgd was surface water. Lava flows underlie the entire basin, and unconsolidated sedimentary deposits overlie the lavas in the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area and in small areas elsewhere. A spring supplies water to much of the Camas Prairie-Glenwood area through a public system, so not many wells are used now. About 56 million gallons (110 acre-feet) of ground water was used in 1974. The unconsolidated deposits yield from 1 to 500 gallons per minute of water to wells, and the basalt can yield more than 100 gallons per minute and possibly several thousand gallons per minute to deep wells.
