The Lower Rio Bermejo is in many ways atypical, as its channel narrows downstream. Also its flow decreases downstream even though average annual rainfall at its mouth is twice that at its head (1,200 mm vs. 600 mm) and its suspended-sediment at El Yacare was about 41 million metric tonnes per year during 1970-73 and 82 million metric tonnes per year at El Colorado. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' disappears near Laguna Escalante, owing to plugging of its channel by sediment, into a network of shallow lakes and marshes. Another stream known as the Rio Pilcomayo ' Inferior ' appears about 160 km to the southeast and meanders downstream to the Rio Paraguay. The Rio Pilcomayo ' Superior ' carries about 100 million metric tonnes of sediment per year. The average annual concentration of sediment is more than 6 kg per cubic meter of flow. Paper and mylar copies of the seismic sections and shot point maps are available to the public from NOAA in Boulder, Colorado.</p><p>The seismic data shows two strong reflections that have been interpreted as returns from erosional surfaces and a third reflection that represents the acoustic basement. From indications in the seismic data, shallow reflectors onlap to the northwest; deep reflectors onlap to the southeast. A major structural feature in lower Cook Inlet is an east-trending transbasin arch here informally named the Augustine-Seldovia arch. Anticlines smaller than the arch trend approximately northeast and may offer good structural traps for petroleum where they intersect the arch.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological A larger area that surrounds and includes the Alton EMRIA site proper contains estimated original identified coal resources of almost 309 million tons (281 megatonnes). Of these estimated resources in the EMRIA site proper, almost 27 million tons (25 megatonnes) are in beds more than 10 feet thick (3 metres); these beds are overlain by less-than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. In the larger area around and including the EMRIA site, about 88.5 million tons (81 megatonnes) are in beds more than ten feet (3 metres) thick with less than 200 feet (60 metres) of overburden. All the estimated resources are in the Smirl zone in the upper part of the Dakota Formation of Cretaceous age. </p><p>The coal has an apparent rank of subbituminous B, an average heating value of about 9,560 Btu, an average sulfur content of about 1.0 percent, and an average ash content of 7.2 percent. When compared with the average abundance of elements in the crust of the Earth as a whole, only selenium and boron were present in the Alton area coal samples in amounts an order of magnitude greater than the average crustal abundance. The mineralized areas occur in syenite and appear to be concentrated along the margins of alkaline dikes, with allanite tentatively identified as the principal mineral containing the uranium-, thorium-, and rare-earths. Samples contain as much as 0.15 percent U<sub>3</sub>0<sub>8</sub> and 1.05 percent Th0<sub>2</sub>, and over 2 percent rare-earth elements. These mineralized rocks&nbsp;are closely associated with alkaline dikes which are part of a dike swarm that crops out over at least 250 km<sup>2</sup> (100 mi<sup>2</sup>). This large dike swarm is thus of considerable economic interest.</p><p>These uranium-, thorium-, and rare-earth-rich rocks occur near the west end of the western Alaska uranium-thorium province (West, 1953; Clark and others, 1975; Miller, 3976) and were found during a regional investigation of this province by the Geological Survey. The alkaline dikes were known from previous mapping by the two senior authors (Miller and others, 1972) to be anomalously radioactive. The areas of water-level observation are mostly where ground water is used in large quantities for irrigation or municipal purposes. This report contains maps showing location of observation wells and water-level changes from 1975 to 1976.
