Although displacements are small (15to 60 m), the structures markedly affect the present distribution and thickness of Coastal Plain strata. Structure contour maps on Cretaceous and Paleocene lithostratigraphic units show that the amount of displacement on the structures increases downward, indicating recurrent movement. The major deformation occurred in the Cretaceous and middle(?) Tertiary but some movement in the latest Tertiary or Quaternary is possible. \r\n\r\nThe structures, herein named the Stafford fault system, extend for at least 56 kilometers parallel to the Fall Line and the northeast[trending reach of the Potomac estuary. Measurements of magnetic properties of samples collected along valley margins or from drill holes indicate that the anomaly-producing rocks are mostly Tertiary volcanic flows in Nevada and mostly Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusives in southern New Mexico. Aeromagnetic data were compiled as both observed and residual anomalies from surveys at various flight-line spacings and intervals from ground surface. Theoretical anomalies from known models were analyzed to recover data on depth, width, and magnetization of models and thereby establish reliability of methods used by certain investigators. These methods were then applied to measured anomalies to obtain information about the igneous rock structures that are buried beneath nonmagnetic valley alluvium. S. Geological Survey began a regional reconnaissance in 1974. The study area, which extends from Prince William Sound on the west to Yakutat Bay on the east, is in a region fraught with natural hazards. The tectonic history of the area suggests that future major earthquakes could pose serious hazards to installations on the continental shelf or along the coast of the Gulf of Alaska. The hazard may be either direct, by ground shaking or fault displacement, or indirect, through ground failure or generation of tsunami waves. Precipitation-evaporation balance and the water quality parameters have high factor loadings on the first principal component. Highest loadings on component 2 are for streamflow in and out of the lakes. Components 3 and 4 are characterized by geology and ground-water flow parameters. For each test, samples of drill cuttings were collect&middot;ed, borehole geophysical logs were run, and water samples were collected from specific zones.</p>\n<p>The Leopold Guerra No. 1 test hole penetrated sand and gravel :o 1,100 feet (335m), and logs and water samples indicated fresh ground water to that depth. Below 1,100 feet (335m), the material probably has low permeability. The Clay Evans No. 1 test penetrated sand, gravel, and clay to 555 feet (169m), sand and thin volcanic flows to about 1,250 feet (381 m), and volcanic flows and tuffs to 2,006 feet (611 m). Logs and water samples indicated fresh ground \\vater to about 1, 250 feet (381 m); below that, permeability is probably low. The Culberson County Airport test was drilled through sand, gravel, and clay to 1,145 feet (349m), conglomerate to 1,205 feet (367m), and the Lower Cretaceous Cox Sandstone to 1,306 feet (398m). Logs and water s~mples indicated fresh water in the alluvial fill and in the Cox Sandstone to about 1,265 feet (386m); below that depth, permeability is probably low. The Davis test was drilled through clay with some thin beds of sand and gravel containing fresh water to a depth of 2,012 feet (613 m).</p>\n<p>Borehole temperature data indicated above-nonnal gradients in the Guerra and Culberson County Airport tests. The recording of aerial thermographic data on videotape is established as one of the prerequisites for the preparation of more accurate mosaics. Post-mission processing of the videotape record can rectify the nadir line to a topographic map base, correct for v/h variations in adjacent flight lines, correct for yaw distortions, rectify distortions caused by pitch, and rectify distortions produced by non-linearity of the side-wise scan. Installation of a thermal infrared scanning radiometer in a gyrostabilized mount and post-mission processing of the videotape record (principally rectification of side-wise scan distortion) would yield a controlled, photogrammetrically accurate thermographic mosaic.
