Mangrove vegetation in the Jewfish Chain is similar to that in all the Caribbean-Florida area;<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Rhizophora mangle</i><span>&nbsp;</span>L. dominates and is interspersed with<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Avicennia germinans</i><span><i>&nbsp;</i></span>(L.) Lamk. and<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Laguncularia racemosa</i><span>&nbsp;</span>(L.) Gaertn. There is no apparent zonation of these three species. The mangrove communities in the Jewfish Chain occur only where they are protected from prevailing winds, storms, and tides, although all are periodically devastated by hurricanes. We found little or no evidence of coast building within these protected locations. The importance of the mangroves appears to be in providing protection and food for other flora and fauna within this unique ecosystem. Twenty-four species of algae were found in the mangroves, 9 of which had not previously been reported from the Bahamas. Distribution of these algae appears to be correlated to incident solar radiation, desiccation, and tide level. A total of 56 species of fish were found in the mangroves, 2 of which were not previously known from the Bahamas. Many fish taken were juveniles, suggesting that mangroves are a nursery ground for numerous species. Nine species of molluscs were found. Each species had a distinct distribution pattern relative to distance from the seaward edge of the mangroves, as well as a distinct vertical distribution pattern. Seventeen species of decapod crustaceans were recorded. Though several species of birds were noted in the mangroves, three species were most abundant: the white-crowned pigeon (<i>Columba leucocephala</i>) uses the mangrove for nesting but feeds in nearby shrub-thorn communities; the gray kingbird (<i>Tyrannus dominicensis</i>) and green heron (<i>Butorides virescens</i>) nest and feed in the mangroves. Our data do not completely describe a stereotyped mangrove community in the Bahamas, but they do give an indication of community structure and suggest several aspects of function.</p>","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Proceedings of the International Symposium on biology and management of mangroves","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"International Symposium on biology and management of mangroves","language":"English","publisher":"University of Florida","usgsCitation":"Wilcox, L.V., Yocom, T.G., and Forbes, A.M., 1976, Ecology of mangroves in the Jewfish Chain, Exuma, Bahamas, <i>in</i> Proceedings of the International Symposium on biology and management of mangroves, p. 305-343.","productDescription":"39 p.","startPage":"305","endPage":"343","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321607,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"574d64afe4b07e28b6683a7f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilcox, L. Runoff, precipitation, and storage characteristics","docAbstract":"<p>The time and space distributions of measured precipitation and measured runoff and of spring storage, which is approximately equal to the subsequent summer runoff of snowmelt and stored groundwater, have been analyzed for the North Cascades region of Washington. Neither precipitation nor runoff shows a consistent relationship with altitude, chiefly because of precipitation-shadowing effects in this region of high relief. The relationship between mean annual precipitation and altitude is improved considerably when a topographic mean altitude is used instead of the actual altitude of the weather station. However, the improvement is not sufficient to explain a number of discrepancies that still occur. Some of the scatter in a precipitation-altitude plot appears to be due to a deficient precipitation catch by high-altitude gages. When the dependence of runoff on precipitation was examined on an annual, seasonal, and monthly basis, it was found that only a few low-altitude gages correlated well with basin runoff. In several instances, annual (water year) runoff could be better predicted from winter precipitation than from annual precipitation. Precipitation and runoff were tested for changes with time and both appeared to have been increasing slightly but not at a statistically significant level. When the summer (May–September) fraction of the total annual runoff is plotted against mean basin altitude, a consistent, physically reasonable, mildly curvilinear relationship is revealed. On the basis of this relationship, by using several drainages with diverse area-altitude profiles the spring storage versus altitude distribution can be estimated for each basin. The area-altitude distribution is used instead of the mean altitude in this calculation because of the apparent nonlinear relationship between runoff and altitude.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR012i002p00187","usgsCitation":"Rasmussen, L.A., and Tangborn, W.V., 1976, Hydrology of the North Cascades region, Washington: 1. A proposed hydrometeorological streamflow prediction method","docAbstract":"<p>On the basis of a linear relationship between winter (October-April) precipitation and annual runoff from a drainage basin (Rasmussen and Tangborn, 1976) a physically reasonable model for predicting summer (May-September) streamflow from drainages in the North Cascades region was developed. This hydrometeorological prediction method relates streamflow for a season beginning on the day of prediction to the storage (including snow, ice, soil moisture, and groundwater) on that day. The spring storage is inferred from an input-output relationship based on the principle of conservation of mass: spring storage equals winter precipitation on the basin less winter runoff from the basin and less winter evapotranspiration, which is presumed to be small. The method of prediction is based on data only from the years previous to the one for which the prediction is made, and the system is revised each year as data for the previous year become available. To improve the basin storage estimate made in late winter or early spring, a short-season runoff prediction is made. The errors resulting from this short-term prediction are used to revise the storage estimate and improve the later prediction. This considerably improves the accuracy of the later prediction, especially for periods early in the summer runoff season. The optimum length for the test period appears to be generally less than a month for east side basins and between 1 and 2 months for those on the west side of the Cascade Range. The time distribution of the total summer runoff can be predicted when this test season is used so that on May 1 monthly streamflow for the May-September season can be predicted. It was found that summer precipitation and the time of minimum storage are two error sources that were amenable to analysis. For streamflow predictions in seasons beginning in early spring the deviation of the subsequent summer precipitation from a long-period average will contribute up to 53% of the prediction error. This contribution decreases to nearly zero during the summer and then rises slightly for late summer predictions. The reason for the smaller than expected effect of summer precipitation is thought to be due to the compensating effect of increased evaporative losses and increased infiltration when precipitation is greater than normal during the summer months. The error caused by the beginning winter month (assumed to be October in this study) not coinciding with the time of minimum storage was examined; it appears that October may be the best average beginning winter month for most drainages but that a more detailed study is needed. The optimum beginning of the winter season appears to vary from August to October when individual years are examined. These results demonstrate that standard precipitation and runoff measurements in the North Cascades region are adequate for constructing a predictive hydrologic model. This model can be used to make streamflow predictions that compare favorably with current multiple regression methods based on mountain snow surveys. This method has the added advantages of predicting the space and time distributions of storage and summer runoff.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR012i002p00203","usgsCitation":"Tangborn, W.V., and Rasmussen, L.A., 1976, Hydrology of the North Cascades region, Washington: 2. Considerable variation was noted in the occurrence of magnetic minerals, comparable to the variation observed earlier in the C2 chondrites. Magnetite was found as the only major magnetic phase in samples of only three C3 chondrites (2–4 wt.%) and the Karoonda C4 chondrite (7.7 wt.%). The magnetite content of these three C3 chondrites is only about one-third that observed in the C1 and C2 chondrites which were found to contain magnetite as the only magnetic phase. Five C3 chondrites were observed to undergo chemical change during heating, producing magnetite: this behavior is characteristic of troilite oxidation. Upper limits on initial magnetite content of about 1–9% were established for these meteorites. Samples of the remaining five C3 chondrites and the Coolidge C4 chondrite were found to contain both magnetite and metallic iron. In two samples, iron containing<span>&nbsp;</span><i>≤2%</i><span>&nbsp;</span>Ni was observed, while in the other four, the iron contained 6–8 wt.% Ni. In addition to containing both magnetite and iron metal, three of these samples reacted during heating to form additional magnetite. Variations in the magnetic mineralogy and, hence by inference bulk mineralogy, of C3 and C4 chondrites indicate a more complex genesis than is evident from whole-rock elemental abundance patterns.</p></div></div></div><ul id=\"issue-navigation\" class=\"issue-navigation u-margin-s-bottom u-bg-grey1\"></ul>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(76)90132-1","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Herndon, J., Rowe, M., Larson, E., and Watson, D., 1976, Thermomagnetic analysis of meteorites, 3. The earthquake was of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale.</p>\n<p>It was centered about 5 km beneath the Kalapana area on the southeastern coast of Hawaii, the largest island of the Hawaiian chain (Fig. 1) and was preceded by numerous foreshocks. The event was accompanied, or followed shortly, by a tsunami, large-scale ground movemtns, hundreds of aftershocks, an eruption in the summit caldera of Kilauea Volcano. The earthquake and the tsunami it generated produced about 4.1 million dollars in property damage, and the tsumani caused two deaths. Although we have some preliminary findings about the cause and effects of the earthquake, detailed scientific investigations will take many more months to complete. We field-tested that hypothesis by attempting to induce botulism in wing-clipped mallard ducks (<i>Anas platyrhynchos</i>) on sewage oxidation ponds in Utah. The experimental ponds were inoculated with C. botulinum spores in June 1974. Aquatic insect populations were monitored throughout the summer. Rotenone was used in August to kill insects in two ponds (one served as control), thereby providing potential substrate for clostridial growth and toxin production. Botulism was not detected among the birds even though they routinely ingested invertebrate carcasses. Samples of dead invertebrates contained no botulinum toxin. We concluded that the microenvironment concept, as it now stands, cannot always be a sufficient explanation of how type C botulism epizootics are initiated in nature. Other microbes may inhibit the growth of clostridial cells or destroy botulinum toxin.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","doi":"10.2307/3800571","usgsCitation":"Moulton, D.W., Jensen, W.I., and Stewart, S.K., 1976, Avian botulism epizootiology on sewage oxidation ponds in Utah: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 40, no. 4, p. 735-742, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800571.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"735","endPage":"742","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":135197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Cache","city":"Richmond","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.82708740234374,\n              41.926036906477584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.82760238647461,\n              41.91013410429826\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81962013244629,\n              41.910006354904496\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81884765624999,\n              41.90266033477953\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80082321166992,\n              41.903107507989986\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80082321166992,\n              41.91026185343638\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7931842803955,\n              41.91032572790956\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79344177246094,\n              41.91920365778389\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79189682006835,\n              41.9193313887699\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7917251586914,\n              41.92571761209006\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79327011108398,\n              41.92571761209006\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79335594177246,\n              41.93516804956578\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79601669311523,\n              41.9352957485923\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79601669311523,\n              41.939509673028375\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.78683280944824,\n              41.939637363361584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7870044708252,\n              41.941041940151536\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79335594177246,\n              41.94219111633131\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79447174072266,\n              41.94346795446271\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79636001586914,\n              41.9435317956981\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79661750793457,\n              41.94774517589915\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.8064022064209,\n              41.94768133888271\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80777549743652,\n              41.944744767025\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80760383605957,\n              41.94289338046775\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80760383605957,\n              41.94116962741647\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.807861328125,\n              41.94040349999142\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81558609008789,\n              41.940595032710654\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81610107421875,\n              41.926164623785155\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.82708740234374,\n              41.926036906477584\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"40","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64afca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moulton, Daniel W.","contributorId":48151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Moulton","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jensen, Wayne I.","contributorId":72353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jensen","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314253,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stewart, Sondra K.","contributorId":117324,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stewart","given":"Sondra","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The faunas are divisible into three distinct successive biofacies on the basis of both planktonic and benthic foraminifers: the basal Inflata Facies accumulated in cool shallow waters during late Pleistocene glaciation; the middle Crassaformis Facies represents a deepening sea that had warming surface waters; the upper Cultrata Facies is characteristic of the Holocene outer-shelf environment. Sea level was at -73 m and -53 m at the end of deposition of the Inflata and Crassaformis Facies, respectively. The biostratigraphic events at West Flower Garden Bank can be accurately correlated with those recorded in the middle and inner shelf and in deep-sea cores. The sequence of late Quaternary sea level and paleotemperature changes in the northern Gulf of Mexico can thereby be reconstructed. Eventually, this knowledge can be integrated with similar data from the shelf edge in other parts of the world to help bridge the gap between the known Quaternary record of the deep sea and that of the continents. ?? 1976.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0031-0182(76)90040-7","issn":"00310182","usgsCitation":"Poag, C.W., and Sidner, B., 1976, Foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the shelf edge: a key to late Quaternary paleoenvironments: Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, v. 19, no. 1, p. 17-37, https://doi.org/10.1016/0031-0182(76)90040-7.","startPage":"17","endPage":"37","numberOfPages":"21","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":267788,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0031-0182(76)90040-7"},{"id":218711,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a1309e4b0c8380cd544c2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Poag, C. Sillimanite, kyanite, biotite, chlorite, and glaucophane zones are recognized at successively greater distances from the migmatite dome. Quartz-muscovite and quartz-biotite oxygen isotope and mineralogie temperatures range from 350 to 700°C.</p><p>The metamorphic complex can be divided into multiple schist-rich (including migmatites) and marblerich zones. The δ<sup>18</sup>O values of silicate minerals in migmatite and schist units and quartz segregations in the schist-rich zones decrease with increase in metamorphic grades. The calculated δ<sup>18</sup>O<sub>H2O</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>values of the metamorphic fluids in the schist-rich zones decrease from about 15‰ in the lower grades to an average of about 8.5‰ in the migmatite.</p><p>The δD values of OH-minerals (muscovite, biotite, chlorite, and glaucophane) in the schist-rich zones also decrease with increase in grade. The calculated δD<sub>H2O</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>values for the metamorphic fluid decrease from −5‰ in the glaucophane zone to an average of about −70‰ in the migmatite. The δD values of water in fluid inclusions in quartz segregations in the higher grade rocks are consistent with this trend.</p><p>Theδ<sup>18</sup>O values of silicate minerals and quartz segregations in marble-rich zones are usually very large and were controlled by exchange with the adjacent marbles. The δD values of the OH minerals in some marble-rich zones may reflect the value of water contained in the rocks prior to metamorphism.</p><p>Detailed data on 20 marble units show systematic variations of δ<sup>18</sup>O values which depend upon metamorphic grade. Below the 540°C isograd very steep δ<sup>18</sup>O gradients at the margins and large δ<sup>18</sup>O values in the interior of the marbles indicate that oxygen isotope exchange with the adjacent schist units was usually limited to the margins of the marbles with more exchange occurring in the stratigraphic bottom than in the top margins. Above the 540°C isograd lower δ<sup>18</sup>O values occur in the interior of the marble units reflecting a greater degree of recrystallization and the occurrence of Ca-Mg-silicates.</p><p>Almost all the δ<sup>13</sup>C values of the marbles are in the range of unaltered marine limestones. Of 461 samples associated with 21 species of avian carcasses, 198 were toxin-positive. Invertebrate species not normally scavengers of vertebrate tissues were less commonly and less highly toxic, particularly when captured 30 cm or more from a carcass; six of 237 samples of such aquatic invertebrates contained low-level toxin. Of the species tested, blow fly larvae (Calliphoridae) were the most consistently and highly toxic, although others, particularly adult and larval stages of several species of beetles (Coleoptera), contained toxin at levels probably significant in the epizootiology of the disease. An estimated 0.05 to 0.25 g of the most toxic fly larvae or 15 g of the most toxic beetles tested carried a mediam lethal dose for an adult mallard duck. Examination of stomach contents of aquatic birds dead of botulism showed that some had consumed invertebrates.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116","usgsCitation":"Duncan, R.M., and Jensen, W.I., 1976, A relationship between avian carcasses and living invertebrates in the epizootiology of avian botulism: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 12, no. 1, p. 116-126, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"116","endPage":"126","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480622,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":135112,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.380930388318\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.380930388318\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.572306568724365\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.572306568724365\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.380930388318\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"12","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a86c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Duncan, Ruth M.","contributorId":84720,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duncan","given":"Ruth","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jensen, Wayne I.","contributorId":72353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jensen","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

This trend is evident for samples of the Woodson Mountain Granodiorite from a single differentiated stock. The distribution of Cr in the minerals from the rocks of the southern California batholith shows that Cr was depleted in the magma during the course of crystallization. The data indicate that the minerals were in equilibrium with the magma during crystallization, and the distribution coefficient (Cr in biotite/Cr in hornblende) is correlated with differentiation indices, indicating either temperature or compositional dependence. The average distribution coefficient (Cr in biotite/Cr in hornblende) is 1.18, which compares favorably with the average values found by other investigators for other suites. ?? 1976.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Chemical Geology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0009-2541(76)90022-X","issn":"00092541","usgsCitation":"Simon, F., and Rollinson, C.L., 1976, Chromium in rocks and minerals from the southern California batholith: Chemical Geology, v. 17, no. The constant row-sum provides a means for scaling the factor model to conform to the units of the original data in such forms as proportions, percentages, or parts per million. The scale factors for an m-factor model are used to derive composition scores and loadings, which lead to the same reproduced data regardless of the choice of reference axes (end-members). Factor-variance diagrams may be constructed to show the proportion of the variance that will be accounted for in each compositional variable by models containing various numbers of end-members. Management decisions are based in part on an assessment ofhabitat characteristics, specifically numbers, distribution, and quality of ponds and lakes in the prime breeding range. This paper reports on a study concerned with mapping open surface water features in the glaciated prairies. Emphasis was placed on the recognition of these features based upon water's uniquely low radiance in a single nearinfrared waveband. The results of this recognition were thematic maps and statistics relating to open surface water. In a related effort, the added information content of multiple spectral wavebands was used for discriminating surface water at a level of detail finer than the virtual resolution of the data.
