This amount is roughly equivalent to man's present gross energy consumption rate. A sub-seafloor geothermal reservoir, to be exploitable under future economic conditions, will have to be hot, porous, permeable, large, shallow, and near an energy-deficient, populated land mass. Furthermore, the energy must be recoverable using technology achievable at a competitive cost and numerous environmental, legal and institutional problems will have to be overcome. The highest-temperature reservoirs should be found adjacent to the zones of the seafloor extension or volcanism that are subject to high sedimentation rates. The relatively impermeable sediments reduce hydrothermal-discharge flow rates, forcing the heat to be either conducted away or released by high-temperature fluids, both of which lead to reservoir temperatures that can exceed 300??C. There is evidence that the oceanic crust is quite permeable and porous and that it was amenable to deep (3-5 km) penetration by seawater at least some time in the early stages of its evolution. Most of the heat escapes far from land, but there are notable exceptions. For example, in parts of the Gulf of California, thermal gradients in the bottom sediments exceed 1??C/m. In the coastal areas of the Gulf of California, where electricity and fresh water are at a premium, this potential resource lies in shallow water (< 200 m) and within sight of land. Other interesting areas include the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Andaman Sea along the margins of the western Pacific, the Tyrrhenian Sea west of Italy, and the southern California borderland and west flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge off the west coast of the United States. Many questions remain to be answered about the physical and other characteristics of these systems before they can be considered a viable resource. Until several of the most promising areas are carefully defined and drilled, the problem will remain unresolved. ?? 1976.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Williams, D., 1976, Submarine geothermal resources: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 1, no. 1, p. 85-100.","startPage":"85","endPage":"100","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":220811,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d24e4b08c986b31d67a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Williams, D.L.","contributorId":7681,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"D.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":360150,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Management decisions are based in part on an assessment ofhabitat characteristics, specifically numbers, distribution, and quality of ponds and lakes in the prime breeding range. This paper reports on a study concerned with mapping open surface water features in the glaciated prairies. Emphasis was placed on the recognition of these features based upon water's uniquely low radiance in a single nearinfrared waveband. The results of this recognition were thematic maps and statistics relating to open surface water. In a related effort, the added information content of multiple spectral wavebands was used for discriminating surface water at a level of detail finer than the virtual resolution of the data. The basic theory of this technique and some preliminary results are described.
","language":"English","publisher":"ASPRS","usgsCitation":"Work, E., and Gilmer, D., 1976, Utilization of satellite data for inventorying prairie ponds and lakes: Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, v. 42, p. 685-694.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"685","endPage":"694","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130183,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"42","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602dbe","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Work, E.A.","contributorId":7650,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Work","given":"E.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315963,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gilmer, D.S.","contributorId":22270,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gilmer","given":"D.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":315964,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Esophagi of males and females contained 40.4 and 48.2 percent animal food, respectively, between 17 April and 25 August. Animal foods consumed by paired females varied with reproductive condition and were independent of their mates. Invertebrates increased from 47.7 i?? 17.4 percent in the diet during prelaying to 72.0 i?? 18.4 percent during laying and declined to 46.3 i?? 30.0 percent during postlaying. Aquatic insects dominated the diet during egg-laying and were selected disproportionately relative to their availability. Esophageal contents indicated that diversity of plant and animal foods in the diet varied inversely with specific conductance. Major factors influencing food selection of the breeding birds are discussed as interactions among their physiological status, their anatomical and behavioral characteristics, and the abundance and behavior of food organisms as influenced by chemical and physical features of the environment. The data suggested that these interrelated ecological factors act simultaneously to control the phenology of events and determine the foods utilized.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3800157","usgsCitation":"Serie, J., and Swanson, G., 1976, Feeding ecology of breeding gadwalls on saline wetlands: Journal of Of 461 samples associated with 21 species of avian carcasses, 198 were toxin-positive. Invertebrate species not normally scavengers of vertebrate tissues were less commonly and less highly toxic, particularly when captured 30 cm or more from a carcass; six of 237 samples of such aquatic invertebrates contained low-level toxin. Of the species tested, blow fly larvae (Calliphoridae) were the most consistently and highly toxic, although others, particularly adult and larval stages of several species of beetles (Coleoptera), contained toxin at levels probably significant in the epizootiology of the disease. An estimated 0.05 to 0.25 g of the most toxic fly larvae or 15 g of the most toxic beetles tested carried a mediam lethal dose for an adult mallard duck. Examination of stomach contents of aquatic birds dead of botulism showed that some had consumed invertebrates.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Disease Association","doi":"10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116","usgsCitation":"Duncan, R.M., and Jensen, W.I., 1976, A relationship between avian carcasses and living invertebrates in the epizootiology of avian botulism: Journal of Wildlife Diseases, v. 12, no. 1, p. 116-126, https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"116","endPage":"126","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480622,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.7589/0090-3558-12.1.116","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":135112,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.380930388318\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.380930388318\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.071533203125,\n              41.572306568724365\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.572306568724365\n            ],\n            [\n              -112.47528076171875,\n              41.380930388318\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"12","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1ae4b07f02db6a86c0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Duncan, Ruth M.","contributorId":84720,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Duncan","given":"Ruth","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314210,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jensen, Wayne I.","contributorId":72353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jensen","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314209,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

We field-tested that hypothesis by attempting to induce botulism in wing-clipped mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) on sewage oxidation ponds in Utah. The experimental ponds were inoculated with C. botulinum spores in June 1974. Aquatic insect populations were monitored throughout the summer. Rotenone was used in August to kill insects in two ponds (one served as control), thereby providing potential substrate for clostridial growth and toxin production. Botulism was not detected among the birds even though they routinely ingested invertebrate carcasses. Samples of dead invertebrates contained no botulinum toxin. We concluded that the microenvironment concept, as it now stands, cannot always be a sufficient explanation of how type C botulism epizootics are initiated in nature. Other microbes may inhibit the growth of clostridial cells or destroy botulinum toxin.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wildlife Society","doi":"10.2307/3800571","usgsCitation":"Moulton, D.W., Jensen, W.I., and Stewart, S.K., 1976, Avian botulism epizootiology on sewage oxidation ponds in Utah: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 40, no. 4, p. 735-742, https://doi.org/10.2307/3800571.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"735","endPage":"742","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":135197,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Cache","city":"Richmond","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.82708740234374,\n              41.926036906477584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.82760238647461,\n              41.91013410429826\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81962013244629,\n              41.910006354904496\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81884765624999,\n              41.90266033477953\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80082321166992,\n              41.903107507989986\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80082321166992,\n              41.91026185343638\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7931842803955,\n              41.91032572790956\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79344177246094,\n              41.91920365778389\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79189682006835,\n              41.9193313887699\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7917251586914,\n              41.92571761209006\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79327011108398,\n              41.92571761209006\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79335594177246,\n              41.93516804956578\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79601669311523,\n              41.9352957485923\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79601669311523,\n              41.939509673028375\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.78683280944824,\n              41.939637363361584\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7870044708252,\n              41.941041940151536\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79335594177246,\n              41.94219111633131\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79447174072266,\n              41.94346795446271\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79636001586914,\n              41.9435317956981\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.79661750793457,\n              41.94774517589915\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.8064022064209,\n              41.94768133888271\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80777549743652,\n              41.944744767025\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80760383605957,\n              41.94289338046775\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.80760383605957,\n              41.94116962741647\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.807861328125,\n              41.94040349999142\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81558609008789,\n              41.940595032710654\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.81610107421875,\n              41.926164623785155\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.82708740234374,\n              41.926036906477584\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"40","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a82e4b07f02db64afca","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moulton, Daniel W.","contributorId":48151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Moulton","given":"Daniel","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314251,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jensen, Wayne I.","contributorId":72353,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jensen","given":"Wayne","email":"","middleInitial":"I.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314253,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stewart, Sondra K.","contributorId":117324,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Stewart","given":"Sondra","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":314252,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Since that time, potable water has been supplied by streams, lakes, wells, and in the late 1950's, a gallery system. The island is a low-lying, wave-cut platform composed of pyroclastic and volcanic rocks with some intrusives. Bedrock is overlain by thin glacial deposits. Most of the island 's present surface is relatively thick peat deposits. On the southern and western sides of the island active sand dunes are present. Ground-water supplies are limited by the dense bedrock; only a small amount of water penetrates into fracture systems. Most ground-water movement is in the overlying glacial and peat deposits. Ground water moves generally from north to south across the island. Currently water supplies are drawn from the gallery system which is capable of providing about 200,000 gallons per day. An emergency water supply is available from two wells. Additional supplies could be developed by either adding to the existing gallery or constructing an additional gallery near the present gallery system. The chemical quality of water analyzed from the gallery well generally approximates that of surface water on the island. None of the constituents in samples from streams, lakes, or ground water, except the August 27, 1970, analysis for Lower Lake, exceed the recommended limits for drinking water (Environmental Protection Agency, 1973).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7682","usgsCitation":"Feulner, A.J., Zenone, C., and Reed, K.M., 1976, Geohydrology and water supply, Shemya Island, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 76-82, 1 Plate: 30.42 x 26.07 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7682.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 30.42 x 26.07 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147076,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":414654,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_15435.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":42105,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1976/0082/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Shemya Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ],\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.70189105722818\n            ],\n            [\n              174.15968017055042,\n              52.70189105722818\n            ],\n            [\n              174.15968017055042,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ],\n            [\n              174.05425444829967,\n              52.750148768881076\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8b2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Feulner, Alvin John","contributorId":32169,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Feulner","given":"Alvin","email":"","middleInitial":"John","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168069,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zenone, Chester","contributorId":8094,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zenone","given":"Chester","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":168068,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Reed, K.
