Since 1906, \"the cow that fell in the crack\" has been a favorite subject of humorous speculation. large earthquakes have always produced large exaggerations, and, although it is difficult to exaggerate the terror humans feel in an earthquake, many scientists have said that much of what witnesses said they witnessed they did not witness at all. Huge, gaping cracks that legend says open and close in the earth, swallowing whole cities, are among those earthquake features that just aren't featured in earthquakes. Since 1800 A.D, most eruptive activity has been on a relatively small scale and has not caused loss of life or significant property damage. However, future volcanism predictably will have more serious effects because of greatly increased use of land near volcanoes during the present century. (See \"Appraising Volcanic Hazards of the Cascade Range of the Northwestern United States,\" Earthquake Inf. Bull., Sept.-Oct. 1974.) The recognition an impending eruption is highly important in order to minimize the potential hazard to people and property. Thus, a substantial increase in hydrothermal activity at Mount Baker in March 1975 ( see \"Mount Baker Heating Up,\" July-Aug. 1975 issue) was regarded as a possible first signal that an eruption might occur, and an intensive monitoring program was undertaken.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Malone, S.D., and Frank, D., 1976, Monitoring Mount Baker Volcano: Earthquake Information Bulletin (USGS), v. 8, no. 2, p. 21-25.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"21","endPage":"25","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":319271,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Mt. Because of its exposed location, Cape Cod was visited by many early explorers. Although clear-cut evidence is lacking, the Vikings may have sighted this land about 1,000 years ago. It was visited by Samuel de Champlain in 1605, and his detailed descriptions and charts have helped present-day scientists to determine the rate of growth of Nauset Beach marsh and Nauset spit. Bartholomew Gosnold, a lesser known explorer, settled for a short time on the Elizabeth Islands to the southwest and gave Cape Cod its name in 1602. The Pilgrims first landed in America on the tip of Lower Cape Cod after they were turned back from their more southerly destination by shoals between Cape Cod and Nantucket Island. On Cape Cod they found potable water and food and had their first fight with the natives. The Pilgrims, however, decided that this land was too isolated, too exposed, and too sandy to support them, and they sailed across Cape Cod Bay to establish Plymouth. These features remain today. Small villages are separated by large areas of forest, dune, beach, and marsh. This unspoiled natural beauty makes Cape Cod one of the most favored vacation areas for the people living in the thickly settled Northeastern States. Cape Cod is of particular interest to geologists because it was formed by glaciers very recently in terms of geologic time. During the Great Ice Age, (the Pleistocene Epoch which began 2 to 3 million years ago), glaciers advanced from the north into the temperate regions of the Earth. Glacial ice covered the land at least four times. Each advance was accompanied by a worldwide lowering of sea level because the source of the ice was water from the seas. When the glaciers melted, the climate and sea level were probably much like they are today. In fact, some scientists believe that the Earth is presently between glacial episodes and that ice once again will advance across the land.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/7000013","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1976, Geologic history of Cape Cod, Massachusetts: General Interest Publication, HTML Document; PDF: 23 p. : col. ill. ; 23 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/7000013.","productDescription":"HTML Document; PDF: 23 p. : col. ill. ; 23 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":18586,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/capecod/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":261211,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000013/report.pdf"},{"id":261212,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000013/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","city":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -71.08333333333333,41.18333333333333 ], [ -71.08333333333333,42.13333333333333 ], [ -70,42.13333333333333 ], [ -70,41.18333333333333 ], [ -71.08333333333333,41.18333333333333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b16e4b07f02db6a5514","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535074,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Previous studies have shown that the initiation and success of wood stork nesting depends on high densities of fish concentrated in ponds and other catchment basins during the dry season. The extreme dependence of the wood stork on the cyclic hydrologic regime of the southern Florida wetlands makes it an indicator of the well-being and ecological stability of the Everglades. \r\n\r\nThe wood stork has declined in numbers over the last 25 years. One reason for the decline in wood stork population was the change in the hydrologic regimen of the Everglades which affected the feeding habitat and the food production. \r\n\r\nThe fish on which the wood stork feeds increase in density during the dry season as water levels fall. In the Everglades marsh, densities were highest in front of the drying edge of surface water at a depth of about 0.3 m. Dry-season densities were greatest when a drought occurred the previous year. \r\n\r\nHistorically wood stork nesting success was associated with high summer water levels, high rates of surface-water discharge and high rates of drying. Before the closure of the south side of Conservation Area 3 in 1962, years of successful and unsuccessful nesting were characterized by different patterns of drying. These patterns changed after 1962 and generally the predictability of successful nesting breaks down thereafter. Only two nesting years after 1962 were successful and in only one of these was the drying rate similar to years of successful nesting before 1962. Two other potentially successful years failed after 1962. This suggests that further changes in the hydrobiological relations occurred within the Everglades after 1962. \r\n\r\nLack of successful nesting after 1962 can be attributed in large part to late colony formation and the interruption of nesting by winter rainfall. In this period (1962-72), colonies formed earlier in years of high early drying rates than in years of low early drying rates. Delay of colony formation is ultimately the result of inability to attain a suitable nutritional state since food supply is the primary factor in the initiation of nesting. Many of the complex food associations of the wood stork remain to be explained.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr75434","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. National Park Service","usgsCitation":"Kushlan, J.A., Ogden, J.C., and Higer, A.L., 1975, Relation of water level and fish availability to wood stork reproduction in the southern Everglades, Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-434, 56 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75434.","productDescription":"56 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"56","costCenters":[{"id":27821,"text":"Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":994,"rank":100,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0434/ofr75434.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.71 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 75-434"},{"id":146621,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0434/coverthb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Everglades","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -81.1834716796875,\n 25.11544539706194\n ],\n [\n -80.584716796875,\n 25.11544539706194\n ],\n [\n -80.584716796875,\n 25.928407032694118\n ],\n [\n -81.1834716796875,\n 25.928407032694118\n ],\n [\n -81.1834716796875,\n 25.11544539706194\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","contact":"
Caribbean-Florida Water Science Center
U.S. Geological Survey
3321 College Avenue
Davie, FL 33314

Contact Pubs Warehouse
","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a48e4b07f02db6238b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kushlan, James A.","contributorId":58653,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kushlan","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169639,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ogden, John C.","contributorId":67895,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ogden","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Higer, Aaron L.","contributorId":52163,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Higer","given":"Aaron","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169638,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
