As much as 15 gallons per minute (0.95 litres per second) can be obtained from wells almost everywhere in the county. Several hundred gallons per minute are available from aquifers in the glacial drift that fill bedrock valleys to thicknesses of 300 feet (91 metres) or more. Estimated well yields from much of the surficial outwash in western Waukesha County exceed 500 gallons per minute (31 litres per second). Estimated well yields from most of the Niagara aquifer, a dolomite as much as 325 feet (99 metres) thick in the eastern two-thirds of the county, exceed 50 gallons per minute (3.2 litres per second). The sandstone aquifer underlies the entire county and ranges in thickness from about 400 feet (120 metres) in the northwest corner to about 2,400 feet (730 metres) in the southeast corner. This aquifer yields more than 1,000 gallons per minute (63 litres per second) to wells over most of the county and is the principal source for municipal and subdivision water. Ground water in Waukesha County is of good quality and is suitable for most uses. Most of the water is a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type, is very hard [more than 180 mg/l (milligrams per litre) hardness], and requires softening for some uses. The ground water locally contains iron and manganese concentrations that exceed the limits (0.3 and 0.05 mg/l, respectively) recommended by the U.S. Public Health Service (1962, p. 7). Water high in sulfate and dissolved solids (saline water) is present locally in the Niagara and sandstone aquifers. Water from one well contained excessive nitrate (more than 45 mg/l). With one exception, wells sampled at irregular intervals indicated no significant changes in their chemical characteristics with time. About 24.3 million gallons per day (1.06 cubic metres per second) of ground water was pumped in the county in 1970. Sixty-two percent was withdrawn from the sandstone aquifer. More than one-half of the latter amount was for domestic use, and more than one-third was for industrial and commercial uses.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey","publisherLocation":"Madison, WI","usgsCitation":"Gonthier, J.B., 1975, Ground-water resources and geology of Waukesha County, Wisconsin: Wisconsin Geological & Natural History Survey Information Circular 29, vii, 47 p.","productDescription":"vii, 47 p.","numberOfPages":"55","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":308483,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":350393,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://wgnhs.uwex.edu/pubs/download_ic29/"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Waukesha County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-88.5401,43.1978],[-88.4183,43.1964],[-88.3027,43.1954],[-88.1827,43.1948],[-88.0639,43.194],[-88.0664,43.1076],[-88.0682,43.0202],[-88.0692,42.9725],[-88.0675,42.9334],[-88.0699,42.8447],[-88.1868,42.8451],[-88.3044,42.8444],[-88.5413,42.8445],[-88.5413,42.9341],[-88.5407,43.0232],[-88.5407,43.111],[-88.5401,43.1978]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Waukesha\",\"state\":\"WI\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56051ecae4b058f706e512db","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gonthier, Joseph B.","contributorId":74350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gonthier","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":573258,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Clayton Valley, Nev., subsurface lithium brine has been the major source of lithium carbonate since about 1967, but the life of this brine field is probably limited to several more decades at the present rate of production. Lithium is so highly soluble during weathering and in sedimentary environments that no lithium-rich sedimentary minerals other than clays have been identified to date. The known deposits of lithium, such as the clay mineral hectorite and the lithium-rich brines, occur in closed desert basins of the Southwest in association with nonmarine evaporites. However, the ultimate source for the lithium in these deposits may be from hydrothermal solutions. The search for previously unreported deposits of nonpegmatitic lithium should consider its probable association, not only with nonmarine evaporite minerals, but also with recent volcanic and tectonic activity, as well as with deposits of boron, beryllium, fluorine, manganese, and possibly phosphate.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Vine, J.D., 1975, Lithium in sediments and brines--how, why and where to search: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 3, no. 4, p. 479-485.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"479","endPage":"485","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265747,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":265781,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1975/vol3issue4/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"24.0 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"volume":"3","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50f7da1be4b0faa3ef21ebf6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vine, James D.","contributorId":105287,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vine","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472005,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Lead-zinc-silver replacement veins constitute most of the deposits. The geometry of the district has been modified by post-ore faulting along the Osburn, Dobson Pass, and other faults. The original position of the Gem stocks, before their separation from the Diego Peak stocks by the Dobson Pass fault, can be approximately reconstructed by moving the truncated stocks and associated geochemical dispersion patterns back into matching positions. The known mineral belts are defined by dispersion patterns of both lead and the Pb:Zn ratio. Similar dispersion patterns of lead and the Pb:Zn ration northwest of the original position of the Gem stocks suggest that the mineral belts extend into that area.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Gott, G.B., and Botbol, J.M., 1975, Possible extension of mineral belts, northern part of Coeur d'Alene district, Idaho: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 3, no. 1, p. 1-7.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"7","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266673,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266672,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1975/vol3issue1/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,42.0 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.0,49.0 ], [ -111.0,42.0 ], [ -117.24,42.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"3","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5108fd8ce4b0d965cd9f2366","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gott, Garland B.","contributorId":8837,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gott","given":"Garland","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472617,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Botbol, Joseph M.","contributorId":19857,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Botbol","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472618,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water-resources planners and other water-oriented groups have expressed concern over ground-water level declines and reductions in streamflow that are occurring as a result of heavy pumping. Digital-computer modeling techniques were used to estimate hydrologic changes in the aquifer system that would be caused by continued development. The system was modeled as a two-aquifer system consisting of a confined sandstone aquifer overlain by a leaky unconfined aquifer and underlain by impermeable bedrock. The physical properties of the aquifer system needed for the model were approximated using aquifer-test data and well-log data and by matching observed hydrologic changes in the system with corresponding changes computed by the model. Computed hydrologic changes do not represent a serious depletion of the available ground-water supply for the foreseeable future. Maximum added regional declines in ground-water levels (drawdowns) from 1970 to 1990 were computed to be approximately 10 feet (3 metres) in the unconfined aquifer and approximately 40 feet (12 metres) in the confined aquifer. It is computed that for the same period the average annual streamflow from the upper Yahara River basin would be reduced by approximately 29 cubic feet per second (0.82 cubic metre per second). These changes are computed based on estimated development trends for the confined sandstone aquifer.","language":"English","publisher":"Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey","publisherLocation":"Madison, WI","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Department of the Interior Geological Survey in cooperation with Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey","usgsCitation":"McLeod, R., 1975, A digital-computer model for estimating hydrologic changes in the aquifer system in Dane County, Wisconsin: Information Circular 30, vii, 40 p.; ill.; maps.","productDescription":"vii, 40 p.; ill.; maps","startPage":"i","endPage":"40","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265977,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":265976,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://wisconsingeologicalsurvey.org/pdfs/IC30.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","county":"Dane County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89.8394,42.8448 ], [ -89.8394,43.2943 ], [ -89.0084,43.2943 ], [ -89.0084,42.8448 ], [ -89.8394,42.8448 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"50fa7d34e4b061045bf9aba5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McLeod, R.S.","contributorId":7283,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McLeod","given":"R.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472112,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Cretaceous Greenhorn, Carlile, Niobrara, and Pierre Formations lie directly beneath the glacial drift, and shale of the Pierre Formation is exposed in several places along the Sheyenne River. The Pleistocene Coleharbor Formation, which covers most of the area, consists mainly of glacial, fluvial, and lake sediment. The Coleharbor Formation averages 200 to 300 feet thick, but it is as much as 550 feet thick in some of the buried valleys. The Holocene Walsh Formation occurs in parts of the area, chiefly sloughs and river bottomland. It consists mainly of alluvial and eolian sediment. Griggs County and the western two-thirds of Steele County are part of the Drift Prairie, which is characterized by flat to gently rolling topography that is rugged in areas of end moraines and intense ice thrusting, subdued on the ground moraine and outwash plains. Associated with these major landforms are numerous washboard moraines, drumlins, eskers, kames, meltwater trenches, and water-washed areas. The eastern third of Steele County is a nearly flat area covered by lake deposits of the glacial Lake Agassiz. As the Late Wisconsinan glacier in eastern North Dakota thinned and receded eastward, it was increasingly affected by the topography over which it was flowing. This resulted in lobation of the glacier. Locally intense areas of thrusting developed within the lobate glacier, and large blocks of subglacial material were moved short distances. Large areas of Griggs County were washed by water flowing from the glacier, and in some areas gravel and sand were deposited. Continued withdrawal of the glacier resulted in ponding of melt water in parts of the two counties. These and other ponds tended to coalesce at lower and lower elevations, eventually forming Lake Agassiz, which flooded part of eastern Steele County.","language":"English","publisher":"North Dakota Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Grand Forks, ND","collaboration":"Prepared by the North Dakota Geological Survey in cooperation with the North Dakota State Water Commission, the water management districts of Griggs and Steele Counties, and the United States Geological Survey; this report was also published as North Dakota County Ground-Water Studies 21-1","usgsCitation":"Bluemle, J.P., 1975, Geology of Griggs and Steele Counties: Bulletin 64-1, vii, 49 p.; Maps: 2 Sheets: 36 x 18 inches.","productDescription":"vii, 49 p.; Maps: 2 Sheets: 36 x 18 inches","numberOfPages":"50","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":273368,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70046307.png"},{"id":273366,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.swc.nd.gov/4dlink9/4dcgi/GetSubContentPDF/PB-251/GriggsSteele_Part_1.pdf"},{"id":273367,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://www.swc.nd.gov/4dlink9/4dcgi/GetSubContentPDF/PB-252/GriggsSteele_Part_1_Plates.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","county":"Griggs County, Steele County","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -98.5019,47.2394 ], [ -98.5019,47.6742 ], [ -97.4504,47.6742 ], [ -97.4504,47.2394 ], [ -98.5019,47.2394 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51b1bbd2e4b022a6a540f9cb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bluemle, John P.","contributorId":104375,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bluemle","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":479433,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Both spring and fall quakes appear to be triggered by minor local stresses superposed on regional tectonic stresses; faulting is postulated to occur when the effective normal stress across a fault is decreased by a local increase in pore-fluid pressure. The spring quakes tend to occur when the reservoir level suddenly rises: increased pore pressure pushes apart the walls of the graben flooded by the reservoir, thus decreasing the effective normal stress across faults in the graben. The fall quakes tend to occur when the reservoir level is lowest: water that gradually infiltrated poorly permeable (fault-gouge?) zones during high reservoir stands is then under anomalously high pressure, which decreases the effective normal stress across faults in the poorly permeable zones.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","usgsCitation":"Schleicher, D., 1975, A model for earthquakes near Palisades Reservoir, southeast Idaho: Journal of Research of the U.S. Geological Survey, v. 3, no. 4, p. 393-400.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"393","endPage":"400","costCenters":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":266569,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266568,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/journal/1975/vol3issue4/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Palisades Reservoir","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.24,42.0 ], [ -117.24,49.0 ], [ -111.04,49.0 ], [ -111.04,42.0 ], [ -117.24,42.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","volume":"3","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51050907e4b091226576e99e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schleicher, David","contributorId":49350,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schleicher","given":"David","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":472446,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Over 6 inches (152 millimetres) of rainfall was recorded during a 10-hour period at Trenton, the capital of New Jersey. No lives were lost but damages to highways and bridges, to industrial, business, and residential buildings, to farmlands and crops, and to water supply systems were severe. This report illustrates the magnitude of the flood and provides hydrologic data needed for planning and design to control or lessen damages from future floods. It includes discussions of the antecedent conditions and meteorological aspects of the storm; a description of the flood and comparison to previous floods; a summary of flood stages and discharges; a discussion of flood frequency; and photomosaics which show inundated areas. More than 200 high-water marks are described as to location and elevation above mean sea level.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri5175","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection","usgsCitation":"Stankowski, S.J., Schopp, R.D., and Velnich, A.J., 1975, Flood of July 21, 1975 in Mercer County, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 51-75, vi, 69 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri5175.","productDescription":"vi, 69 p.","onlineOnly":"Y","temporalStart":"1975-07-20","temporalEnd":"1975-07-21","costCenters":[{"id":470,"text":"New Jersey Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":257660,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/wri_51_75.gif"},{"id":257659,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1975/51/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","county":"Mercer","city":"Trenton","otherGeospatial":"Delaware River;Assunpink Creek","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -74.81666666666666,40.2 ], [ -74.81666666666666,40.333333333333336 ], [ -74.56666666666666,40.333333333333336 ], [ -74.56666666666666,40.2 ], [ -74.81666666666666,40.2 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a1116e4b0c8380cd53ee9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stankowski, Stephen J.","contributorId":31389,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stankowski","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":464812,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schopp, Robert D.","contributorId":10426,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schopp","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":464810,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Velnich, Anthony J.","contributorId":15263,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Velnich","given":"Anthony","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":464811,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
