It is a semiarid area along the San Juan River near the communities of Montezuma Creek and Aneth. Within the Blanding Basin, geologic formations exposed are of Jurassic and Quaternary age. The rock strata are nearly horizontal, dipping gently northeastward. Wells derive small quantities of mater for domestic use from aquifers in the Morrison Formation and the Bluff Sandstone of Jurassic age, but aquifers in deeper formations contain saline mater or brine. Alluvium consisting of sand and gravel along the San Juan River is a potential source of additional moderately large quantities of water to shallow wells for industrial use and public supply. The chemical quality of water in the alluvium is good and varies directly with the discharge of the San Juan River.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr75268","usgsCitation":"Sumsion, C.T., 1975, Hydrologic reconnaissance of the Montezuma Creek-Aneth area, southeastern Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-268, Report: 32 p.; 4 Tables: 18.48 in x 15.49 in. or smaller; 1 Figure: 23.43 in. x 18.66 in., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75268.","productDescription":"Report: 32 p.; 4 Tables: 18.48 in x 15.49 in. or smaller; 1 Figure: 23.43 in. x 18.66 in.","numberOfPages":"30","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":45112,"rank":303,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45107,"rank":403,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/plate-1.pdf","text":"Table 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"General description and water-bearing characteristics of geologic units in the Montezuma Creek-Aneth area"},{"id":45109,"rank":5,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/plate-3.pdf","text":"Table 4","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Records of selected wells in alluvium"},{"id":45110,"rank":6,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/plate-4.pdf","text":"Table 5","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Chemical analyses of water from selected wells"},{"id":45111,"rank":4,"type":{"id":27,"text":"Table"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/plate-5.pdf","text":"Table 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Records of selected wells in consolidated formations"},{"id":148816,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45108,"rank":404,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0268/plate-2.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"linkHelpText":"Map showing locaitons of selected wells and alluvium along the San Juan River, Montezuma Creek-Aneth area"}],"publicComments":"Prepared for the U.S. Public Health Service","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db6055c4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sumsion, C. Four of the ruptures occurred in the western coastal plain and foothills, and two occurred in the Longitudinal Valley of eastern Taiwan. Maps are included showing the locations and dimensions of the displacements. The published geological literature probably would not lead one to infer the existence of a fault along most of the 1906 rupture, except for descriptions of the rupture itself. Over most of its length the 1935 rupture on the Chihhu fault is parallel to but more than 0.5 km from nearby faults shown on geologic maps published in 1969 and 1971; only about 1.5 km of its 15 km length coincides with a mapped fault. The coastal plain part of the Tuntzuchio fault which ruptured in 1935 is apparently not revealed by landforms, and only suggested by other data. Part of the 1946 Hsinhua faulting coincides with a fault identified in the subsurface by seismic work but surface indications of the fault are obscure. The 1951 Meilun faulting occurred along a conspicuous pre-1951 scarp and the 1951 Yuli faulting occurred near or in line with pre-1951 scarps. \r\nMore than 40 faults which, according to the published literature, have had Pleistocene or later movement are shown on a small-scale map. Most of these faults are in the densely-populated western part of Taiwan. The map and text calls attention to faults that may be active and therefore may be significant in planning important structures. \r\n\r\nEquivocal evidence suggestive of fault creep was found on the Yuli fault and the Hsinhua fault. Fault creep was not found at several places examined along the 1906 fault trace. \r\n\r\nTectonic uplift has occurred in Taiwan in the last 10,000 years and application of eustatic sea level curves to published radiocarbon dates shows that the minimum rate of uplift is considerably different in different parts of the island. Incomplete data indicate that the rate is high near Hualien, where an uplift of at least 0.6 m and probably more than 1 m occurred in the 1951 earthquake, and near and south of the 1946 faulting. Sudden uplifts can have serious consequences for installations near the shore. Investigation of this process, study of recently active faults, and continuing study of seismicity are necessary parts of a practical earthquake-hazard reduction program.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr7541","usgsCitation":"Bonilla, M.G., 1975, A review of recently active faults in Taiwan (Version 1.1): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-41, 43 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7541.","productDescription":"43 p.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":145535,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":976,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/of75-41/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"edition":"Version 1.1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b19e4b07f02db6a7fa4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bonilla, Manuel G.","contributorId":74384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bonilla","given":"Manuel","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166615,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The local ground-water flow system is dominated by an outwash aquifer that is sandwiched between two till layers in the western part of the area and exposed at the land surface in the eastern part. Ground water discharges from the aquifer into lakes in the outwash area but is recharged from lakes in the till-covered area. Irregular aquifer geometry resulted in a complex ground-water flow system. Simulation of the system by areal and vertical-section models showed that the lakes significantly control groundwater flow near their boundaries. Inadequate field data and complex geology caused difficulty in obtaining solutions with the vertical-section model. The models may be used to guide collection and interpretation of field data, and quantification of the ground-water flow system. With modification, they could be used to predict aquifer response to transient stresses. They also could be incorporated into more complex models to determine the movement of solutes in the ground-water system.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"St. Paul, MN","doi":"10.3133/wri7540","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U. Although no fossils have been found in the immediate vicinity of the pass, assemblages collected at the end of the last century from 5 miles south of the pass, and recently collected fossils from Afghanistan, suggest strongly that the limestone is Carboniferous to Permian and perhaps Jurassic in age. The basal contact of the Khyber Limestone in places appears to be conformable upon the quartzites and tuffs of the Ali Masjid Formation; elsewhere it is probably an unconformity or a fault, especially where the limestone lies directly on the Ordovician to Carboniferous Landi Kotal Slate. The Ali Masjid Formation overlies the Shagai Limestone, which, in turn, rests in fault contact on the Landi Kotal Slate.</p><p>Structurally the area is characterized by at least four major, roughly east-west trending thrust or reverse faults, along which relatively older rocks have moved southward over younger rocks. A north-northeast-trending system of alternating anticlines and synclines has been superimposed on the earlier structures. Elevated terraces and alluvial valleys suggest a very recent uplift of about 600 to 1,000 feet.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75272","usgsCitation":"Stauffer, K.W., 1975, Geology of the Khyber Pass, Khyber Agency, Pakistan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-272, Report: ii, 42 p.; 1 Figure: 16.17 x 9.93 inches; 1 Plate: 29.29 x 19.50 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75272.","productDescription":"Report: ii, 42 p.; 1 Figure: 16.17 x 9.93 inches; 1 Plate: 29.29 x 19.50 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":431546,"rank":4,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0272/figure-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431545,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0272/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":431544,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0272/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148254,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0272/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"100000","country":"Pakistan","otherGeospatial":"Khyber Pass, Khyber Agency","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              74.44335937499998,\n              37.020098201368114\n            ],\n            [\n              71.982421875,\n              36.87962060502676\n            ],\n            [\n              71.3671875,\n              35.96022296929667\n            ],\n            [\n              71.015625,\n              34.66935854524543\n            ],\n            [\n              69.873046875,\n              34.016241889667015\n            ],\n            [\n              69.521484375,\n              32.76880048488168\n            ],\n            [\n              68.02734375,\n              31.57853542647338\n            ],\n            [\n              66.884765625,\n              31.12819929911196\n            ],\n            [\n              63.28125,\n              29.38217507514529\n            ],\n            [\n              61.17187499999999,\n              29.76437737516313\n            ],\n            [\n              61.52343749999999,\n              24.766784522874452\n            ],\n            [\n              67.939453125,\n              24.04646399966658\n            ],\n            [\n              71.630859375,\n              24.287026865376436\n            ],\n            [\n              70.13671875,\n              27.761329874505232\n            ],\n            [\n              71.630859375,\n              27.761329874505232\n            ],\n            [\n              73.388671875,\n              29.99300228455108\n            ],\n            [\n              74.44335937499998,\n              31.80289258670676\n            ],\n            [\n              75.498046875,\n              32.24997445586331\n            ],\n            [\n              74.44335937499998,\n              34.45221847282654\n            ],\n            [\n              75.76171875,\n              34.88593094075317\n            ],\n            [\n              76.9921875,\n              35.53222622770337\n            ],\n            [\n              75.322265625,\n              37.16031654673677\n            ],\n            [\n              74.8828125,\n              36.94989178681327\n            ],\n            [\n              74.44335937499998,\n              37.020098201368114\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acee4b07f02db67f9c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stauffer, Karl W.","contributorId":20760,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stauffer","given":"Karl","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172259,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Considering only those sites (approximately one square city block in size) for which there is good evidence for the degree of ascribed intensity, the empirical relation derived between 1906 intensities and distance perpendicular to the fault for 917 sites underlain by rocks of the Franciscan Formation is: Intensity = 2.69 - 1.90 log (Distance) (km).\r\n\r\nFor sites on other geologic units intensity increments, derived with respect to this empirical relation, correlate strongly with the Average Horizontal Spectral Amplifications (AHSA) determined from 99 three-component recordings of ground motion generated by nuclear explosions in Nevada. The resulting empirical relation is: Intensity Increment = 0.27 +2.70 log (AHSA), and average intensity increments for the various geologic units are -0.29 for granite, 0.19 for Franciscan Formation, 0.64 for the Great Valley Sequence, 0.82 for Santa Clara Formation, 1.34 for alluvium, 2.43 for bay mud. The maximum intensity map predicted from these empirical relations delineates areas in the San Francisco Bay region of potentially high intensity from future earthquakes on either the San Andreas fault or the Hazard fault.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Geological Survey, National Center for Earthquake Research,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75180","usgsCitation":"Borcherdt, R.D., and Gibbs, J., 1975, Prediction of maximum earthquake intensities for the San Francisco Bay region: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-180, 25 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75180.","productDescription":"25 leaves, 2 sheets, :ill., maps (2 fold. in pocket) ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145559,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41142,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41143,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41144,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0180/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b07e4b07f02db69add7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Borcherdt, Roger D. 0000-0002-8668-0849 borcherdt@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8668-0849","contributorId":2373,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Borcherdt","given":"Roger","email":"borcherdt@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":166623,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gibbs, James F.","contributorId":95880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gibbs","given":"James F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":166624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The metamorphic units consist of probable correlatives of the Precambrian(?) Salkhala Series; the upper Paleozoic, slightly metamorphosed schists, quartzites, and calcareous rocks of the Chalt Schist; the higher metamorphosed (garnet and staurolite grades) schists, gneisses, and marbles of the Baltit Group; the Pasu Slate; and the Triassic(?) and older(?) greenstone complex consisting in large part of metavolcanic rocks.</p><p>The metamorphism of the area is due at least in part to the intrusions of two huge silicic to intermediate batholiths of Cretaceous to Tertiary age composed largely of biotite granodiorite.</p><p>The structural grain is west-northwest throughout the area and represents a part of the structural pattern whose focus is the Hazara-Kashmir syntaxial bend. Although steep faults and isoclinal folds are present, no large thrust faults were seen. The area apparently is structurally less complicated than comparable parts of the Hindu Kush mountains farther west in Chitral State. Deeply incised streams and elevated terraces indicate very recent uplift of considerable magnitude.</p><p>Although traces of potential ore minerals are common in the Gilgit-Hispar area, deposits of possible commercial value were not seen. Sedimentary rocks ranging from at least Middle Devonian to Cretaceous, and perhaps Early Tertiary age lie between ridge-forming granodiorite intrusions and are cut by thrust faults. The thrust planes dip 10? to 40? to the north- west. Movement of the upper thrust plates has been toward the southeast relative to the lower blocks. \r\n\r\nIf this area is structurally typical of the Hindu-Kush and Karakoram Ranges, then these mountains are much more tectonically disturbed than previously recorded, and suggest compression on a scale compatible with the hypothesis that the Himalayan, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush Ranges form part of a continental collision zone. \r\n\r\nThe thrust faults outline two plates consisting of distinctive sedimentary rocks. The lower thrust plate is about 3,000 feet thick and consists of the isoclinally folded Upper Cretaceous to perhaps lower Tertiary Reshun Formation. It has overridden the Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Chitral Slate unit. This thrust plate is, in turn, overridden by an 8,000-foot thick sequence consisting largely of Devonian to Carboniferous limestones and quartzites.\r\n\r\nA key factor in the tectonic processes has been the relatively soft and plastic lithology of the siltstone layers in the Reshun Formation which have acted as lubricants along the principal thrust faults, where they are commonly found today as fault slices and smears. \r\n\r\nThe stratigraphic sequence, in the central Mastuj Valley was tentatively divided into 9 mapped units. The fossiliferous shales and carbonates of the recently defined Shogram Formation and the clastlcs of the Reshun Formation have been fitted into a sequence of sedimentary rocks that has a total thick- ness of at least 13,000 feet and ranges in age from Devonian to Neogene. Minerals of potential economic significance include antimony sulfides which have been mined elsewhere in Chitral, the tungstate, scheelite, which occurs in relatively high concentrations in heavy-mineral fractions of stream sands, and an iron-rich lateritic rock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr75556","usgsCitation":"Stauffer, K.W., 1975, Reconnaissance geology of the Central Mastuj Valley, Chitral State, Pakistan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-556, 44 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (51 p., 1 sheet - PGS), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75556.","productDescription":"44 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.; (51 p., 1 sheet - PGS)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148257,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0556/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45038,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0556/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45039,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0556/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45040,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0556/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45041,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0556/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6ce4b07f02db63e996","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stauffer, Karl W.","contributorId":20760,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stauffer","given":"Karl","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172263,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

But more than simple preservation of such an environment is involved in its inclusion in our National Park System. Its isolation from the mainland provides an almost untouched laboratory for research in the natural sciences, especially those studies whose very nature depends upon such isolation. </p><p>One excellent example of such research is the intensive study of the predator-prey relationship of the timber wolf and moose, long sponsored by the National Park Service and Purdue University. In probably no other place in North America are the necessary ecological conditions for such a study so admirably fulfilled as on Isle Royale. The development of a natural laboratory with such conditions is ultimately dependent upon geologic processes and events that although not unique in themselves, produced in their interplay a unique result, the island archipelago as we know it today, with its hills and valleys, swamps and bogs the ecological framework of the plant and animal world. </p><p>Even the most casual visitor can hardly fail to be struck by the fiordlike nature of many of the bays, the chains of fringing islands, the ridge-and-valley topography, and the linear nature of all these features. The distinctive topography of the archipelago is, of course, only the latest manifestation of geologic processes in operation since time immemorial. Fragments of geologic history going back over a billion years can be read from the rocks of the island, and with additional data from other parts of the Lake Superior region, we can fill in some of the story of Isle Royale. After more than a hundred years of study by man, the story is still incomplete. But then, geologic stories are seldom complete, and what we do know allows a deeper appreciation of one of our most naturally preserved parks and whets our curiosity about the missing fragments.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b1309","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park
