By utilizing state-of-the-art integrated circuits, the size of the remote unit has been considerably reduced over previous equipment and the power consumption has been decreased by a factor of over 100 to less than 2 milliwatts. This reduction in size and power makes it possible to package the electronic equipment, together with a year's supply of batteries, in a container the size of a tennis-ball can. The field equipment for a short-period station is now sealed in a 3-inch plastic tube 22 inches long . Within the Yakutat region are some of the tallest mountains, some of the heaviest snowfalls, and the largest glacier in North America. Between the abrupt mountain front and the Gulf of Alaska lies a very gently sloping plain of outwash derived from repeated cycles of advance followed by melt and retreat of glaciers during the Quaternary Period. The latest melting probably took place 500 to 600 years ago. Yakutat is built upon the moderately steep moraine that is the product of melting of one of these glaciers. Near Yakutat, surficial deposits are as much as 700 feet thick and probably overlie siltstone, sandstone, and mudstone. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of T.R. Cummings, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Michigan.</p><p>Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States\". Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Michigan are contained in Part 4 of that series.</p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports is limited and they are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S.
