The Cohutta Wilderness and the Hemp Top Roadless Area have minor occurrences of metallic minerals, but no known resource potential for such minerals in the forseeable future, judging by available data, and only a very minor potential for stone for aggregate, road construction, and similar nondimension use. The rocks of the Ducktown massive sulfide district to the northeast do not appear to extend into the study area, and geochemical data derived from samples of rock, soil, and alluvium do not reveal any anomalously high concentrations of trace elements that could be representative of hidden mineral deposits. Sedimentary rocks underlying the metamorphic rocks exposed at the surface have an unknown potential for hydrocarbons in the form of natural gas. No reasonable estimate of the potential can be made until some test drilling is done in the area.

The contiguous Cohutta Wilderness and Hemp Top Roadless Area are in the western part of the Blue Ridge physiographic province of northern Georgia and southeastern Tennessee (fig. 1).  All of the study area is in Georgia except an irregular strip of land about 1 mi at its widest on the northern end of the Cohutta Wilderness in Tennessee.  The area of the Cohutta Wilderness is 34,650 acres; that of the Hemp Top Roadless Area is 2,800 acres.  The areas are in rugged mountainous terrain- a strongly dissected upland ranging in altitude from about 980 to 4,200 ft above sea level.  Local altitude differences of 1,450-2,000 ft and slopes steeper than 25° are common.  The north end of the Cohutta Wilderness is about 6 mi south of the Ocoee River gorge, 10 mi west-southwest of the major copper-and sulfur-mining district at Ducktown, Tenn., and approximately 22 mi southeast of Cleveland, Tenn., in Bradley County, west of the area shown in figure 1.  The eastern, central, and northwestern parts of the wilderness are drained by Jacks River and it tributaries; the southwestern part, by the Conasauga River and its tributaries; and the Hemp Top Roadless Area, by Tumbling Creek and some of its western tributaries.  All drainage ultimately goes to the Ocoee River and from these into the Hiwassee River.

The james River Face Wilderness comprises 8,800 acres in the Jefferson National Forest and occupies parts of Bedford and Rockbridge Counties, west-central Virginia.  It is about 2 mi southeast of Natural Bridge Station and 0.5 mi south of Glasgow (fig. 1).

Access is provided by U.S. Route 501, State Route 130, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Interior access is provided by the Appalachian Trail, other marked foot trails and a graded bridle path.

The area, on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is drained by small tributaries of the James River.  Altitudes range from 600 ft where U.S. Route 501 crosses the James River to 3,073 ft on Highcock Knob.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a field reconnaissance of Sipsey Wilderness in the fall of 1978 and of the roadless areas in the spring and summer of 1979.  Mines, quarries, prospects, exposures, and drill sites in and near the study area were examined.  Fifty-three samples were collected during the field work; sample localities are shown in figure 3.  Analyses and preliminary test results for all limestone, clay and shale, sandstone, and coal samples were reported by Mory and others (1981).  Mineral resource potential of the Sipsey Wilderness and additions is reported by Schweinfurth and others (1982).

No mining activities are being conducted in the study area at present.  Previous mining has been limited to small-scale production of limestone and coal.  Two oil and gas test holes have been drilled inside the study area.

A mineral resource assessment of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and U.S. Bureau of Mines. The area was evaluated for its mineral potential by analysis of geochemical samples by the U.S. Geological Survey and by examination of mines, prospects, and mineralized areas by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area has a low potential for minerals and little surficial indication of potential for oil, gas, or geothermal energy. Assignment of a low potential is based on consideration of geologic environments where mineral and other resources might be expected.

This report summarizes 1,307 semiquantitative chemical analyses of rocks collected to aid int he evaluation of the mineral resources of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, Oreg. Chemical analyses and sample location maps are presented by Grimes, Leinz, and Speckman (1981). The area is located in the Kilamath Mountains geoporphic province of southwestern Oregon, and the area's location and boundaries are shown on the accompanying map.

The geology of the study area is described by Page and others (1981), Gray (1980), and Ramp (1975). The rocks of the area cosist of dismembered ophiolite, island-arc, and sedimentary rock sequesnces that lie within the Western Jurassic belt of the Klamath Mountains. All units normally found within these assemblages are present; however, thrusting ans subsequent normal faulting have disrupted the geometric relations, producing a complexly faulted series of imbricate thrust slices.

Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, Sept. 3, 1964) and the Joint Conference Report on Senate Bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Hercules Glades Wilderness, Mark Twain National Forest, Taney County, Missouri.

Under the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and the Joint Conference Report on Senate Bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines have been conducting mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially designated as \"wilderness,\" \"wild,\" or \"canoe\" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System, and some of them are presently being studied. The act provided that areas under consideration for wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of suitability studies. The act directs that the results of such surveys are to be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of the Mokelumne Wilderness, El Dorado National Forest, Amador, Calaveras and Alpine Counties, California and Caples Creek, Raymond Peak, and Tragedy-Elephants Back Roadless Areas, Alpine, Amador, Ca 1 aver as, and El Dorado Counties, California. The Mokelumne Wilderness was established by Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964, the Roadless Areas were classified as further planning areas during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, 1979.

This report summarizes the results of those studies.

The coal-bearing Norton Formation of Early and Middle Pennsylvanian age is at the surface over most of the northwestern two-thirds of the Big A Mountain quadrangle. The southeastern part of the quadrangle, bounded on the northwest and northeast by Buffalo Mountain and Russell Fork faults, consists of highly faulted rocks ranging in age from Early Cambrian to Middle Pennsylvanian (Miller and Meissner, 1977). The coal-bearing rocks in the northwestern two-thirds of the quadrangle are bisected by the Russell Fork fault. The rocks southwest of the fault, which are part of the Cumberland overthrust block (Wentworth, 1921), have been displaced approximately four miles to the northwest (Englund, 1971) along the concealed Pine Mountain overthrust. Because the rocks of the Norton Formation are displaced laterally by the Russell Fork fault, the coal bed sequences across the fault do not match. For this reason the resources are shown separately for the coal beds north and south of the fault (table 1). The stratigraphic section from the Gladeville Sandstone to the Tiller coal bed is thicker to the south of the fault than it is to the north, as illustrated in figures 16 and 17. The Puncheon Camp, a locally important coal bed, is present only south of the fault.
