The area includes three sinkhole basins created by such subsidence: Cranes Roost, Palm Springs, and Grace Lake.</p><p>Cranes Roost basin (drainage area, 5.02 square miles) contains a closed drainage system of lakes and swamps--including Lakes Adelaide, Florida, and Mobile--that terminates at Cranes Roost sink. It also contains Lake Orienta and two unnamed sinks which do not overflow into Cranes Roost sink.</p><p>Palm Springs basin (drainage area, 1.77 square miles) includes Lake Marion, Eleventh Hole Pond, and several small unconnected sinks.</p><p>Grace Lake basin (drainage area, 1.64 square miles) includes Island Lake which overflows into Grace Lake.</p><p>The recent spread of urban development has tended to encroach on the flood plains of lakes in these sinkhole basins and cause concern over the flood hazard that results. An investigation was made of the area to document the highest known lake levels, to examine possible effects of urbanization with regard to increasing the flood hazard, and to appraise the possibilities of controlling lake levels to reduce or limit the flood hazard.</p><p>The highest lake stages of record in the three sinkhole basins occurred in September 1960. Analyses of the hydrologic relations between lake stages, ground-water levels, stream discharges, and rainfall in the area indicated that the lake stages of September 1960 probably were the highest attained since at least 1895.</p><p>Cultural development that increases the percentage of a sink basin covered by impervious materials will cause more rapid runoff of a larger part of the rainfall in the basin. Thus, as development progresses, lake stages seldom reached under natural conditions may be reached more frequently unless the lake levels are controlled.</p><p>In Crane Roost basin, the levels of Lakes Mobile, Adelaide, and Florida could be controlled by enlarging their surface outlets and adding control structures; however, such measures might be ineffective unless the level of Cranes Roost also was controlled. The level of Cranes Roost could be controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing a surface outlet; pumping might be ineffective during extreme wet periods because of the potential for inflow from upstream lakes and the potential for ground-water inflow from the Floridan aquifer. The level of Lake Orienta could be Controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing a surface outlet.</p><p>In the Palm Springs sink basin, the levels of Lake Marion and the several small sinks could be controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing surface outlets. For the several sinks, however, providing a surface outlet would require an extensive excavation and pumping might prove impractical because of seepage induced from the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>The level of Island Lake--in Grace Lake sink basin-could be controlled by enlarging its surface outlet and providing a control structure. Nutrients were resampled November 7, 1974. Surface waters within the watershed were calcium bicarbonate types with very similar concentrations of major dissolved constituents. Samples collected June 13 contained between 7.4 and 14 milligrams per litre dissolved nitrate (as N), between 0.05 and 1.3 milligrams per litre dissolved phosphate (as P), and between 2.3 to 4.0 milligrams per litre dissolved organic carbon. Samples collected November 7 contained less than 0.22 milligrams per litre dissolved nitrate (as N). The concentrations of fecal coliform bacteria ranged from 450 to 14,000 colonies per 100 millilitres. The concentrations of fecal streptococci bacteria ranged from 600 to 8,500 colonies per 100 millilitres. The bed materials of an upper Rock Creek site contained moderately high concentrations of dieldrin and chlordane (17 and 19 micrograms per kilogram, respectively) and also contained less than 6 micrograms per kilogram aldrin, DDD, heptachlor epoxide, and PCB's. Bed materials in a lower Rock Creek site contained less than 4.2 micrograms per kilogram of all the above compounds except PCB's. Biologic diversity indices of 2.7 and 2.2, which do not typify healthy benthic communities, were found in the upper and lower Rock Creek sampling sites, respectively. The benthic communities were dominated by midge larvae at both sites. The areas most seriously affected by flooding were: Central and southern California (January and February); the upper Midwestern States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois (April); north-central Ohio (July); Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia (Hurricane Camille in August); and Florida and Georgia (September). Severe floods in central and southern California were caused by three storms during January and February. At least 60 lives were lost. Homes and property were destroyed or damaged, by rainstorms, floods, and mudflows. Many floods approached or exceeded the maximum known. The severe flood damage was due partly to recent home construction in floodprone areas. The April floods in the upper Midwestern States of North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois were expected because of a large accumulation of snow containing as much as 8 inches of water. Flood-protection procedures, together with cool temperatures, had a mitigating effect on the flood. The floods were the largest since the late 1800's, and their recurrence intervals exceeded 50 years at many of the gaged sites. Estimates of flood damage were about $147 million. More than a million acres of rich agricultural land were inundated, thousands of culverts and bridges were washed out, 23,000 people were forced from their homes and 11 lives were lost in the six-State flood area. Intense rainstorms and wind with gusts as much as 100 miles per hour, July 4-5, caused record floods in north-central Ohio, July 4-8. The storm and floods left trees uprooted, more than $66 million in damage, and 41 deaths. In many places the floods were the largest of record. Together with the wind and rainstorm, the hydrologic conditions were among the most significant experienced in the area. Hurricane Camille was the most intense hurricane on record to enter the United States mainland. It struck the Mississippi-Alabama coast on August 18, with tidal waves as high as 25 feet above mean sea level and wind velocities more than 190 miles per hour. Tidal wave and flood damage was about $1.3 billion. In Mississippi the known dead totaled 139 and 76 other persons were missing. The hurricane intensity decreased as it moved inland until it merged with severe rainstorms over the Appalachian mountains. The intensified hurricane then caused record-breaking floods of streams in a 50-mile-wide area as it moved eastward from Sulphur Springs, W. Va., to Fredericksburg, Va. Total flood damage in Virginia exceeded $116 million. There were 113 known deaths, 102 injuries, and 39 people missing. A tropical storm that was nearly stationary over northwest Florida for about 48 hours, September 20-23 produced record rains and floods. Near Quincy, Fla., the total rainfall for the period exceeded 20 inches. On Little River near Quincy, the peak discharge was nearly twice the previous maximum of record and was three times that of a 50-year flood. Flood damage to agricultural lands, bridges, culverts, and roads was about $1.7 million.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Surface waters within the watershed were calcium bicarbonate types with very similar concentrations of major dissolved constituents and specific conductance values. Streamwaters contained less than 0.26 milligram per litre dissolved nitrate (as N), 0.03 milligram per litre or less dissolved phosphate (as P), and from 4.8 to 5.9 milligrams per litre dissolved organic carbon. Fecal coliform bacteria concentrations were between 220 and 1,400 colonies per 100 millilitres and fecal streptococci concentrations ranged between 85 and 330 colonies per 100 millilitres. Bed material in lower Jordan Creek contained dieldrin, DDD, and DDE in concentrations less than 0.6 microgram per kilogram. A reasonably good biologic diversity index of 2.9 was found in a lower Jordan Creek sampling site. The benthic community was dominated by midge larvae.
