The largest deposits now undergoing extensive exploration and development are in the eastern Amazon Basin. Most of these deposits are in the State of Para, but some are in Amazonas and Maranhao.</p><p>Discovery of large-scale resources of bauxite in the Amazon Region is so recent that mining has not begun, but government geologists estimate the total resources in aluminum deposits in the lower Amazon to be in the multibillion ton range.</p><p>The annual production rate of bauxite ore in Brazil, much of it from Pops de Caldas in Minas Gerais, is about 760,000 metric tons of ore from which about 100,000 tons of aluminum metal is produced, most of which is consumed by Brazilian industry.</p><p>The Amazon bauxite deposits are on terraces formed on sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age; in Minas Gerais the deposits are formed on Precambrian metasedimentary rock, and at Poos de Caldas on a circular It reflects a major tectonic event in the middle and late Paleozoic history of the North American Cordillera. Tailleur and Brosge (1970) interpreted the Endicott as a clastic wedge derived from land to the north during the Late Devonian and from land to the northeast during Early Mississippian, when a shallow sea transgressed the area. In the north-central and eastern parts of the range, the Endicott is composed of three formations, in ascending order, the Upper Devonian Hunt Fork Shale and Kanayut Conglomerate and the Lower Mississippian Kayak Shale; in the western part of the range, the stratigraphic relations of these formations with formations in the Endicott is uncertain. Donovan systematically collected paleocurrent and clast-size data from the Endicott Group along the Brooks Range for Mobil Oil Corporation in 1967 and 1968. In recognition of the general interest in the information, Mobil has permitted its release. Rock glacier deposits, colluvium, and solifluction deposits are included in some areas. Some till is mapped with landslide deposits because distinguishing these two deposits from one another is difficult: Furthermore, in some areas till has failed by landsliding and other types of mass movements. Movement within the deposits varies from none to rapid; rates of movement may also be variable in any given landslide within the same year.
