About two years ago, I was assigned to a project to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Cretaceous system of the northern Rocky Mountains; namely, in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota. I had no problem identifying potential traps; both structural and stratigraphic, but recognized the fact that most of the production from the Cretaceous in Montana is natural gas. More important, this production is from relatively shallow depths, often less than 2,000 feet. I realized that not only stratigraphy and structure, but also the origin, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons must be fully understood for effective exploration of new resources in the northern Rocky Mountains and elsewhere.

Creek-Aneth area, southeastern Utah","docAbstract":"The Montezuma Creek-Aneth area is in the northeastern part of the Navajo Indian Reservation in southeastern Utah. It is a semiarid area along the San Juan River near the communities of Montezuma Creek and Aneth. Within the Blanding Basin, geologic formations exposed are of Jurassic and Quaternary age. The rock strata are nearly horizontal, dipping gently northeastward. Wells derive small quantities of mater for domestic use from aquifers in the Morrison Formation and the Bluff Sandstone of Jurassic age, but aquifers in deeper formations contain saline mater or brine. Alluvium consisting of sand and gravel along the San Juan River is a potential source of additional moderately large quantities of water to shallow wells for industrial use and public supply. The first phase of that program, a study of coastal drift off south Texas, was reported by Hunter and others (1974). They reported on a three-year program of seasonal releases of both bottom and surface drifters on the south Texas shelf; this study confirmed the hypothesis that the yearly cycle of coastwise water movement is largely controlled by seasonally changing winds. They also showed complex convergences of both surface and bottom waters which shift along the coast, as well as a layered drift structure which periodically directs surface and bottom waters in opposite directions. Results of several drift studies in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico which preceded this study are summarized by Hunter and others (1974).
The second phase began in July 1973, when the study was shifted to the coast off north-central Texas . This report presents the first year results in the north-central area where studies are continuing.

2) Scattered hydrothermal mineral occurrences in the Antarctic Peninsula; and 3) metal-enriched pelagic sediments, ferromanganese nodules, and volcanic rocks(?) in the southeast Pacific basin. Andean metalliferous deposits, the chief concern of this report, are for the most part spatially and genetically related to calc-alkaline plutons, sub-volcanic intrusions, and volcanic rocks emplaced during the Andean orogeny of Late Triassic to Quaternary age. These deposits are components of a single metallogenic province superimposed on two or more pre-Andean metallogenic provinces that are indicated by scattered deposits of Paleozoic and Precambrian(?) age. Occurrences in the Antarctic Peninsula are of age and origin similar to the deposits in the Andes and are considered to belong to the Andean province.
The Andean metallogenic province may be divided into several subprovinces, each parallel to the Andes and the continental margin and each having a dominant metal or suite of metals. The central Andes of Peru, northern Chile, and Bolivia, which contain the greatest concentration of exploitable deposits and the greatest variety of ore types, have as many as five linear partly overlapping subprovinces. These sub-provinces, from west to east (Pacific coast to the eastern Andean front), are characterized, respectively, by deposits of : 1) iron; 2) copper, with or without associated gold; 3) polymetallic base metals (zinc, lead, copper), generally containing silver; 4) tin; and 5) gold. Iron deposits chiefly are near the coast in central to northern Chile and in southern Peru. The copper and polymetallic provinces are characterized by abundant deposits in the central Andean region but comparatively few scattered deposits in the north (Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela) and in southern Chile and Argentina. Scattered gold-rich veins and placers occur along the western Andean front and coastal region, the general area of the copper province, from central Chile to northern Colombia. Similar deposits occur along a discontinuous belt in the eastern Andes from Bolivia to Ecuador and in the central Andes of Colombia. Tin deposits are almost wholly restricted to the eastern Andes of Bolivia.
The position and age distribution of plutonic and volcanic rocks and associated metalliferous deposits of the Andes indicate presence of an active subduction zone in this region since at least Late Triassic time. Magmas of the calc-alkaline igneous rocks are believed to have formed chiefly by partial melting of mantle, oceanic sediments, and oceanic crust along the Benioff zone at depths of 100 to 200 km. Plutonic and volcanic rocks show a general though nonuniform progression of decreasing age from west to east. Rocks of Jurassic and Cretaceous age are most abundant near the coast, whereas those of Tertiary and Quaternary age dominate in the Andes. Locally, intrusive rocks and ore deposits of widely different ages are juxtaposed. Metals of the ore deposits associated with the calc-alkaline rocks were supplied by the source rocks in the Benioff zone, some of which probably had been previously enriched in certain metals at the ancestral East Pacific Rise and were mobilized or assimilated from metal-rich zones in the overlying mantle and continental crust by magmas rising from the Benioff zone.

The Federal Disaster Assistance Administration estimated that 175 homes were damaged to at least half their value, 4,500 received some damage, with additional losses to schools, utilities, hospitals, and transportation systems. Early estimates indicated that damages may be as high as $20 million.
During the time of flooding the U.S. Geological Survey obtained aerial photography and streamflow data to document the disaster. This report shows on photomosaic base maps the extent of flooding in the Lansing area. Areas included are the lower reaches of the Red Cedar River and Sycamore Creek and the Grand River downstream from the confluence of the Red Cedar River. Little flooding occurred on the Grand River upstream from the Red Cedar so, although aerial photography was obtained for that reach, photomosaics were not prepared. Streamflow data collected at five gaging stations near Lansing are given. Information on the magnitude of the flood should be useful in making decisions regarding use of flood plains in the area. It is one of a series of reports on the April 1975 flood in the Lansing metropolitan area.
