Water resources data for the 1973 water year for Montana include records of data for the chemical and physical characteristics of surface water. Data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once weekly, monthly or less frequently. Records are given for 79 sampling stations of which 69 are continuous record stations, 2 are partial-record stations, and 8 are miscellaneous sites. Locations of surface water-quality stations are shown in figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included. The records were collected by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of George M. Pike, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Montana.

Piedmont and western Coastal Plain regions of North Carolina","docAbstract":"The sediment-transport characteristics of streams were determined in a 6,000-square-mile (15,500-square-kilometre) area of the Coastal Plain and Piedmont regions of eastern North Carolina during 1969-73. The study covered all or parts of 21 counties and included data for 28 sediment-sampling stations located in parts of 4 major river basins, the Roanoke, Pamlico, Neuse, and Cape Fear. Annual suspended-sediment yields ranged from 333 to 12 tons per square mile (117 to 4.2 tonnes per square kilometre). Streams in the Piedmont region have the highest yields. Suspended-sediment yield decreases in an eastward direction from the Piedmont to the Coastal Plain region.
Sediment characteristics are directly affected by topography, storm runoff, geology, land use, and man-made detention structures. At one sampling station in the 1973 water year 44 percent of the suspended sediment tonnage was transported during 34 days of high flow. In the Piedmont region, sediment yields vary indirectly with the percentage of forest cover in the basin, but there appears to be no definite relationship between forest cover and yield in the Coastal Plain region. Large lakes act as sediment-detention reservoirs. Average annual sediment yields ranged from 98 to 333 tons per square mile (34 to 117 tonnes per square kilometre) for 3 headwater streams which flow into Hyco Lake in Person County; however, the yield for the station less than 2 miles (3.2 kilometres) downstream from Hyco Dam was about 12 tons per square mile (4.2 tonnes per square kilometre).
Most suspended sediment during floods in Piedmont streams ranges in size from sand to silt, whereas the suspended material in flooding streams in the Coastal Plain is generally clay size.

The complex includes four major rock units, the Murdama Group, porphyritic granodiorite, quartz monzonite, alkaline granite, and areas enriched in silica. Structural and compositional relationships among some of the rock units are defined in part by aeromagnetic and gamma-ray spectrometric geophysical data. Geochemical data from -10 +30 mesh surficial debris were primarily related to the composition of the major rock units, whereas data from heavy-mineral concentrates were used to establish the location of tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth anomalies. \r\n\r\nTwo areas of about 40 sq km each are occupied by tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth anomalies interpreted to be related to the alkaline granite. One of these is a contact metasomatic anomaly; the other is related to leakage from an inferred underlying cupola of the alkaline granite. In Part 1, records are included for 131 gaging stations of which 124 are streamflow discharge stations, 1 is stage only streamflow station, and 6 are reservoir or lake stations; also included are records for 12 low-flow partial-record stations, 38 crest-stage partial-record stations and 13 miscellaneous sites. Locations of gaging stations are shown in Figure 1, and location of partial-record stations are shown in Figure 2. In Part 2, data on the quality of surface water (chemical, temperature, and sediment) were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals, such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 15-, 30-, or 60-minute intervals. Records are given for 42 sampling stations of which 30 are continuous record stations, and 12 are partial-record stations. Locations of water-quality stations are shown in Figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report. In Part 3, records are included for 37 observation wells of which 8 are equipped with water-level recorders that give a continuous graph of the fluctuations, 3 are equipped with digital recorders that punch the water level on a tape at hourly intervals, at 26 manual reading are made with a steel tape by observers on the days indicated. Locations of index wells are shown in Figure 2. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Edwin E. Harris, district chief. These data represent that portion of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in West Virginia.
Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Water-quality records beginning with the 1964 water year have been similarly released either in separate reports or in conjunction with streamflow records. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.
Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. Records of chemical quality, water temperatures, and suspended sediment have been published since 1941 in an annual series of water-supply papers entitled, \"Quality of Surface Waters of the United States.\" More information is given under the headings \"Publications\" on page 24. Records of ground water levels are published in a series of water supply papers entitled, \"Ground-water Levels in the United States\". Through 1955 these were in an annual series but are now in a 5-year series. More information is given under the heading \"Publications\" on page 25.
