The heavy minerals are partially concentrated in the field by panning. In the laboratory the heavy minerals are further concentrated by floating off the quartz and feldspar in a heavy liquid, such as bromoform, having a specific gravity of 2.89. Magnetite is separated magnetically and scheelite is identified under short-wave ultraviolet light. To obtain quantitative results on the minerals present, the sample is reduced by coning and quartering, mounted on a slide in oil, and a count of a minimum of 250 grains made. The chi square test applied to the splitting and counting techniques shows them to be statistically valid. The properties of some heavy minerals most useful for their rapid identification are listed. Wells for domestic and stock supply generally can be drilled successfully in consolidated rocks. Wells for large-scale municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally are successful in areas underlain by saturated unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel. </p><p>Unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 2 million acre-feet of recharge annually, and about 84 million acre-feet of water is in temporary storage in the deposits. In 1968 and 1969 about 270,000 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn annually for all purposes. Of the total withdrawn, about 167,000 acre-feet was applied for irrigation of about 122,000 acres of cropland. The area is mostly underlain by quartz monzonite. Countless quartz veins ranging from a knife edge to more than 3 m in thickness cut the quartz monzonite; many of these veins contain molybdenite. Detailed mapping and intensive sampling of the molybdenite-bearing quartz veins indicate that their grade and quantity are probably inadequate to permit present-day mining; however, they represent a potential future resource. Ground-water yields are low and may be locally inadequate for single family requirements where wells produce from bedrock in the eastern Hillside region. At lower altitudes single family water requirements of 3 to 10 gallons per minute or 0.2 to 0.6 litre per second usually can be obtained, but aquifers capable of being pumped at larger yields for public supplies are uncommon. However, in a few localities, wells do produce 40 to 300 gallons per minute or 2.5 to 19 litres per second from sand and gravel aquifers lying within thick sequences of glacial till. Streamflow within the Hillside area is inadequate as a significant source of water for public supply. Springs, swamps, and water-logged surficial sediments in the Hillside area are mainly caused by hilly terrain and low permeability of surficial materials.</p><p>The relative vulnerability of streams, lakes, and ground water to pollution caused by the discharge of liquid waste, particularly from onsite sewage-disposal systems, is moderate to high in about half the study area. At higher altitudes contamination of bedrock aquifers may occur if discharge of liquid wastes is not regulated. The deep sedimentary aquifers at lower altitudes are less susceptible to contamination. In the past they were used primarily to store water for irrigation and domestic uses. Some were used for recreation. Today, rapid suburban development in the&nbsp;Front Range Urban Corridor is accompanied by a shift of the principal use of many lakes to recreation and to centers of real estate developments. These same lakes are threatened with a general deterioration of chemical and biological quality caused by heavy use and development of the surrounding area.&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p>The purpose of this report is to present the results of an inventory of the lakes in the central one-third of the Colorado&nbsp;Front Range Urban Corridor. This inventory provides information that might be helpful in planning the best and most beneficial use of lakes in an area of rapid population growth. The report includes data on lake size and water quality. Size data are included on most of the lakes of 2 hectares (20,000 m<sup>2</sup><span>,&nbsp;</span>or about 5 acres) or greater, and water-quality data are provided on most lakes larger than 10 hectares (about 25 acres).
