This compilation is intended to account for the many new publications generated by the intense level of petroleum related activity on the North Slope. It is a supplement to the bibliography Geological Literature on the North Slope of Alaska by J. C. Maher and W. M. Trollman published by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Inc., Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1970. A deliberate attempt has been made to follow closely the format of the latter publication. The termination date for publications in the 1970 report was November 1, 1969. The present compilation includes published material from that date to July 1, 1974.

In the past they were used primarily to store water for irrigation and domestic uses. Some were used for recreation. Today, rapid suburban development in the Front Range Urban Corridor is accompanied by a shift of the principal use of many lakes to recreation and to centers of real estate developments. These same lakes are threatened with a general deterioration of chemical and biological quality caused by heavy use and development of the surrounding area.
\nThe purpose of this report is to present the results of an inventory of the lakes in the central one-third of the Colorado Front Range Urban Corridor. This inventory provides information that might be helpful in planning the best and most beneficial use of lakes in an area of rapid population growth. The report includes data on lake size and water quality. Size data are included on most of the lakes of 2 hectares (20,000 m2, or about 5 acres) or greater, and water-quality data are provided on most lakes larger than 10 hectares (about 25 acres). Bodies of water resulting form excavation of gravel (borrow pits) were generally not included in the inventory.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if data from four sites, shown in figure 1, substantiate the hypothesis that corroded, broken, or improperly sealed casing permitted relatively fresh water from the shallow aquifers to circulate within the salt zone and that the resulting brine solution leaked downward into permeable zones that would accept the fluid under hydrostatic pressure.
Strata similar to those penetrated by wells at the four sites (shown in tables 1 and 2) underlie much of central Kansas. Many thousands of oil and gas wells have been drilled through the salt beds, but land subsidence has been reported at few of the sites. Reported sites are near highways, and two well-documented instances of subsidence involve the stability of highway right-of-way. Because many wells have been drilled in remote areas, similar occurrences may remain unreported. The scope of this investigation is limited to the compilation, analysis and interpretation of the available data from four sites shown in figure 1, and the mention of a fifth site.
The photograph (fig. 2) shows a deteriorated casing pulled from a well located between Sites 3 and 4 in western Rice County. The casing consists of inner and outer pipes with the annular space between filled with cement. The almost complete failure of the outer pipe is evident. The casing is believed to be from the well in the concrete pit that is in the lower right of the photograph. The pond in the background is a sink that has developed near the well; detailed historical data, however, were unavailable for further study of this site.
The investigation was requested by the Energy Research and Develop-ment Administration (formerly U.S. Atomic Energy Commission) as part of a study of bedded salt in Kansas as a repository for radioactive wastes. Data for the report were collected from the files of several Kansas State agencies; the Highway Commission, Department of Health and Environment, Geological Survey, and the Corporation Commission. The geologic formations that underlie the four sites selected for this study are described in table 1 and information about the oil and gas wells at the sites is given in table 2.

An office was established in Austin, Texas, in 1915 for surface-water studies, for ground-water studies in 1929, and water-quality studies in 1937. Previous investigations of the water resources of Texas were carried out by personnel of the U.S. Geological Survey from the Washington headquarters. The basic-data records and the results of investigations are published by the Geological Survey or by cooperating agencies.
Geologic investigations were made by personnel from Washington and Denver as early as 1887. The Geophysics Branch of the Geologic Division maintained an office in Austin from 1954 to 1974. Results of these investigations were published by the Geological Survey.
This bibliography lists alphabetically by author all reports prepared as a result of Geological Survey investigations in Texas, many of which were carried out in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board and its predecessor agencies, river authorities, other State and local agencies, and other Federal agencies.

The lowered ground-water levels and the consequent threat of salt-water intrusion concern farmers and residents who depend on ground water for irrigation and domestic purposes. Extensive crop irrigation is continuing; small towns such as Ruskin, River-view, Sun City Center, and Apollo Beach are rapidly expanding; and new communities are being planned. In addition, there are plans to mine the extensive phosphate deposits a few miles east of this heavily-f armed area. All these activities require large supplies of fresh ground water.
The Hillsborough County Commission cooperated with the U. S. Geological Survey to study changes of water levels and water quality in southwest Hillsborough County. The purpose of this report is to compare the position of the potentiometric surface in 1953 with that in 1973 and to show chloride and sulfate concentrations in ground water in 1974.
