The Lower Cretaceous aquifer of Southeastern Virginia is simulated in this study. The aquifer is only a few feet thick along the Fall Line, where it is near or at the surface, but it thickens and dips to the east. At Franklin where the top of the aquifer is 220 feet (67 metres) below sea level, it is about 600 feet (180 metres) thick. Thirty five miles (56 kilometres) east of Franklin, along the eastern boundary of the model area, the top is about 900 feet (270 metres) below sea level, and the thickness is estimated to be 2,000 feet (610 metres). The aquifer consists of an alternating series of permeable and semipermeable beds, which contain various mixtures of sand, gravel, silt and clay. The sediments are continental stream deposits in the western and central parts of the area, but grade to marine deposits in the eastern part. Transmissivity is zero at or near the Fall Line, and increases eastward to 19,000 cubic feet per day per foot (1,800 cubic metres per day per metre) at Franklin. Further eastward, trans-missivity probably increases slightly, but then decreases as the marine phase is reached. The aquifer is.overlain by a semiper-meable'confining layer and is underlain by relatively impermeable rocks of the pre-Cretaceous basement.
The model used is the finite-difference digital type described by Pinder (1970). Historical water levels of the aquifer were simulated from 1891 to December 1, 1972. The 1891 water-level surface was developed by running a steady-state version of the Pinder model. Simulation runs from 1891 to 1941, 1970, and 1972 are in good agreement with historical water levels. A modeling factor was used as a multiplier for varying the coefficients of transmissivity and vertical permeability of the confining layer without altering the initial (1891) surface used to start the modeling runs. This technique should be helpful in the development of other models of artesian aquifers.
Predicitive runs show that, if pumpage continues to increase as it has in the past, serious dewatering of the aquifer will occur at Franklin and possibly at other centers of increased pumpage. However, a predictive run to the year 2022 shows that if pumpage does not increase, additional drawdown would be small. Other predictive runs show the effects caused by hypothetical withdrawals at other locations.

Although the species is common throughout much of North America, it has not been studied intensively, particularly over a long period. The published literature is concerned mostly with food habits, color phase, taxonomy, and miscellaneous observations. Breeding biology and population dynamics have received little attention.
This report presents the basic life history and population information about screech owls in northern Ohio over a 30-yr period. The owls studied were nesting in boxes (Fig. 1) established for wood ducks (Aix sponsa) along rivers, creeks, and marshes in a four-county area (Ottawa, Sandusky, Wood, and Lucas Counties) near Lake Erie (Fig. 2). No special trapping techniques were required as the screech owls readily used these nesting boxes and could be easily captured while in them. More than 3,000 owls were captured and banded; 500 were recaptured after the initial banding, some 10 or 15 times. This process provided a large quanity of basic information for this report.

The aquifers now developed are in the upper 1,000 feet of a regionally extensive series of southwesterly dipping basalt flows of the Columbia River Group. Most of the aquifers are confined. Those in the depth range of about 500 to 1,000 feet are the chief source of ground water pumped from irrigation wells. Transmissivity of these aquifers ranges from less than 2,700 feet squared per day to more than 40,000 feet squared per day, and storage coefficients range from 0.0015 to 0.006. Shallower aquifers are generally much less permeable, but they are a source of recharge to deeper aquifers with lower artesian heads; vertical leakage occurs along joints in the basalt and down uncased wells, which short circuit the aquifer system. For model analysis, the deeper, pumped aquifers were grouped and treated as a single layer with drawdown-dependent leakage from an overlying confining layer. Verification of the model was achieved primarily by closely matching observed pumpage-related head declines ranging from about 10 feet to more than 40 feet over the 4-year period from March 1967 to March 1971. \r\n\r\nProjected average annual rates of decline in the Odessa-Lind area during the 14-year period from March 1967 to March 1981 are: from 1 to 9 feet per year if pumpage is maintained at the 1970 rate of 117,000 acre-feet per year; or, from 3 to 33 feet per year if 1970 pumpage is increased to 233,000 acre-feet per year, which includes 116,000 acre-feet per year covered by water-right applications held in abeyance. Rolette County, North Dakota","docAbstract":"Test drilling and geologic data indicate that there are two potential aquifers in the Belcourt, N. Dak. area capable of supplying a sufficient quantity of ground water for the city of Belcourt. The Fox Hills aquifer, located about 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) west of Belcourt, could yield a sufficient quantity, as much as 500,000 gallons per day (1,900 cubic metres per day), of ground water for Belcourt, but the quality is unsuitable for a public supply. The Shell Valley aquifer, located about 5 miles (8 kilometres) southwest of Belcourt, appears to contain the quantity and quality of ground water required for the city of Belcourt municipal supply.

In Part 1, records are included for 144 gaging stations of which 137 are streamflow discharge stations, and 7 are reservoir or lake stations; also included are records for 105 crest-stage partial-record stations, and miscellaneous sites. Locations of gaging stations are shown in figure1. In Part 2, water-quality data on chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of surface water were collected from designated sampling sites at predetermined intervals such as once daily, weekly, monthly, or less frequently, and at some sites data were recorded on punched paper tape at 15-, 30-, or 60-minute intervals. Records are given for 108 sampling stations of which 53 are continuous record stations, 30 are partial-record stations, and 25 are miscellaneous sampling sites. Locations of water-quality stations are shown in figure 1. A few pertinent stations in bordering states are also included in this report. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Anthony Homyk, district chief. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Missouri.

(1974) to contain about 25 percent of the Nation's petroleum resources. Some 11 billion barrels of petroleum liquids and 31 trillion cubic feet of natural gas have been announced as discovered to date.
In northern Alaska, Paleozoic and Mesozoic shelf and slope deposits of the Brooks Range orogen were thrust relatively northward over the depressed south margin of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic Arctic platform, upon which a foredeep (the Colville geosyncline) developed in earliest Cretaceous time. Detritus from the Brooks Range filled the foredeep and pro-graded northwest and northeast to fill the Cretaceous and Tertiary North Chukchi and Umiat-Camden basins and form the Beaufort shelf.
In southern Alaska, a series of arc-trench systems developed on oceanic rocks during the Jurassic and Cretaceous. Between the arcs and the metamorphic (continental) terranes of east-central and northern Alaska, large back-arc and arc-trench gap basins received thick volcanic and detrital deposits. These deposits were extensively deformed and disrupted by mid-Jurassic to Tertiary plutonism, Laramide oroclinal bending, wrench faulting, and arc-related compression.
The Laramide events 'continentalized' the late Mesozoic back-arc basin deposits and welded them to the older continental terranes to the north and east. Subsequent sedimentation was localized and nonmarine except in onshore and offshore coastal basins, where thick mixed marine and nonmarine sections were deposited. The Aleutian arc and associated Queen Charlotte transform fault system have dominated structural and depositional patterns in southern Alaska since the early Cenozoic.
The largest petroleum reserves in Alaska (the Prudhoe Bay and associated fields) and the best prospects for additional large discoveries are in northern Alaska, where an extensive terrane is underlain by Upper Paleozoic to Tertiary carbonate and shelf, slope and delta clastic deposits. The pre-Tertiary back-arc and arc-trench gap basins in southern and interior Alaska are too intensely deformed or too low in porosity (because of diagenetic mobilization of labile constituents) to offer more than modest local prospects. The Tertiary coastal basins do, however, offer large tracts of thick marine and nonmarine clastic rocks and in some areas many large folds to exploration. Such basins are known to be petroliferous on Bristol Bay and the Gulf of Alaska and to contain major accumulations of oil and gas at Cook Inlet, but they are relatively little explored.

This flow is regulated in part by the dam at Prairie du Sac and influenced considerably by the 47 storage reservoirs and power dams above Lake Wisconsin. The river's gradient and flow characteristics can be illustrated by a river profile and graphs of flow durations, 7-day low flows, and flood-flow recurrence (Hindall and Borman, 1974). Sufficient streamflow data to develop meaningful graphs were available for the gaging site at Muscoda, about the midpoint of the river reach being studied.
