Water resources data for the 1974 water year for Kansas including records of stream-flow or reservoir storage at gaging stations, partial-record stations, and miscellaneous sites are given in this report. Records are included for 163 gaging stations of which 143 are streamflow discharge stations and 20 are reservoir or lake stations; also are included records for 23 low-flow partial-record stations, 127 crest-stage partial-record stations, and 2 flood-hydrograph stations. Locations of gaging stations are shown in figure 1. A few pertinent stations (not included above) in bordering States are also included in this report. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey under the direction of Charles W. Lane, district chief. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System collected by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State and Federal agencies in Kansas.
Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. These reports are for limited distribution and are designed primarily for rapid release of data shortly after the end of the water year.
Records of discharge and stage of streams, and contents and stage of lakes and reservoirs are published in a series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled, \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Through September 30, 1960, these water-supply papers were in an annual series and since then are in a 5-year series. More information is given under the headings \"Publications\" on page 6.

As petroleum reservoirs they commonly have poor performance histories. They contain the sediments of a depositional system comprised of three closely associated depositional subenvironments: dune, interdune, and extradune. Sediments of each subenvironment have different textural properties which resulted from different depositional processes. Dune sediments are usually more porous and permeable than interdune or extradune sediments and may be better quality reservoirs than interdune or extradune sediments. Interdune sediments are here restricted to those nondune sediments deposited in the relatively flat areas between dunes. Extradune sediments (a new term) include all deposits adjacent to a dune field and are mainly subaqueous deposits. Dune sediments may be enveloped by extradune sediments as the depositional system evolves resulting in a texturally inhomogeneous reservoir having poor fluid migration properties.\r\n\r\nThis model of textural inhomogeneity in eolian blanket sandstones. was applied to the Weber (Tensleep) Sandstone in Brady, Wertz, and Lost Soldier fields, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Data were obtained from both outcrop and subsurface and included environmental interpretation, textural analysis, and plotting of the distribution of depositional subenvironments. As predicted from the model, the texture of dune sediments in Brady field differed markedly from interdune and extradune sediments. The predicted geometric distribution of subenvironments was confirmed in Lost Soldier and Wertz fields. However, secondary cementation and fracturing there has obscured the original porosity and permeability contrasts. Water for domestic and stock supplies generally can be obtained from wells in either of the above deposits. Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel and in adequate quantities from the consolidated rocks in the southeastern part of the area.
The unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 226,000 acre- feet of recharge annually, and about 775,000 acre-feet of water is in storage in the deposits. An additional 77 million acre-feet is in storage in the consolidated aquifers. In 1968 about 7,500 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for all purposes. About 6,300 acre-feet of surface water and 1,400 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation of 7,600 acres of cropland. The total annual ground-water withdrawal for irrigation may be as much as 20,000 acre-feet by year 2000.

Circulation barely reached hurricane intensity for a brief period in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm crossed the Florida Panhandle coastline on June 19, 1972, and followed an unusually extended overland trajectory combining with an extratropical system to bring very heavy rain from the Carolinas northward to New York. This torrential rain followed the abnormally wet May weather in the Middle Atlantic States and set the stage for the subsequent major flooding. The record-breaking floods occurred in the Middle Atlantic States in late June and early July 1972. Many streams in the affected area experienced peak discharges several times the previous maxima of record. Estimated recurrence intervals of peak flows at many gaging stations on major rivers and their tributaries exceeded 100 years. The suspended-sediment concentration and load of most flooded streams were also unusually high. The widespread flooding from this storm caused Agnes to be called the most destructive hurricane in United States history, claiming 117 lives and causing damage estimated at $3.1 billion in 12 States. Damage was particularly high in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The detailed life history of Hurricane Agnes, including the tropical depression and tropical storm stages, is traced. Associated rainfalls are analyzed and compared with climatologic recurrence values. These are followed by a detailed description of the flood and streamflows of each affected basin. A summary of peak stages and discharges and comparison data for previous floods at 989 stations are presented. Deaths and flood damage estimates are compiled.

General conclusions drawn from the study are: (1) Although aluminous chromite deposits exist, no minable deposits of refractory-grade material have been made found to date; (2) small but minable reserves\nof elemental sulfur, fluorspar, and magnesite are available; (3) detailed mapping, prospecting, and sampling are required to fully assess the ore reserves in known deposits, and (4) field examination of some of the other deposits described herein may call for additional exploration which may eliminate them from further consideration as minable deposits. The sulfur deposits at Koh-i-Sultan volcano in the Chagai District of Quetta Division are the only assured source of elemental\nsulfur in Pakistan. Indicated reserves are 85,000 tons of less than 50 percent sulfur ore of solfataric origin. At full pool Lopez Reservoir has a surface area of 974 acres (394 square hectometres), a maximum depth of 145 feet (44.2 metres), and a shoreline of 22 miles (35.4 kilometres).
Nuisance algal blooms have been a frequent occurrence in the reservoir since the first summer after filling (1969). The dominant bloom species was the blue-green alga Anabaena unispora. Cospecies were the diatoms Stephanodiscus astraea and Cyclotella operculata and the green algae Pediastrum duplex and Sphaerocystis schroeteri. During a bloom of A. unispora in May 1972, the total cell count at the lake surface was almost 100,000 cells per millilitre of water.
Lopez Reservoir is thermally stratified from April until November. Dissolved-oxygen stratification closely parallels the thermal stratification. Anoxic conditions begin to develop in mid-May, and by early July all water below a depth of 40 feet (12 metres) is oxygen deficient.
The application of copper sulfate (CuSO4) to reduce algal production has met with little success. Possible application rates and methods of determining application rates based upon water chemistry are presented.

Estimated mean annual coarse-sediment discharge for the 31 water years, 1941-71, is 230,000 tons (209,000 tonnes) in the Santa Ana River and 300,000 tons (272,000 tonnes) in the Santa Maria River. Streamflow in the Santa Maria River was adjusted to represent 1971 conditions. The 31-year mean annual volumes of coarse-sediment discharges are 190,000 cubic yards (140,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Ana River and 250,000 cubic yards (190,000 cubic metres) in the Santa Maria River.
Only during floodflow is any significant quantity of sediment transported. In the Santa Maria River an estimated 99 percent of all coarse sediment was transported in 1 percent (113 days) of the 31-year period.

The data were collected as part of a joint heat-flow study by the Australian National University (ANU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the direction of J. C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). The format is similar to that used for basic data from United States heat-flow determinations (Sass and Munroe, 1974). Each section contains a state map showing the geographic distribution of heat-flow data followed by tables which list individual temperatures, thermal conductivities, and radiogenic heat production values. A companion volume (Bunker and others, 1975) gives details of the heat-production measurements together with individual radioelement concentrations. Localities are arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The methods and techniques of measurements have been described by Sass and others (1971a, b). Unusual methods or procedures which differ markedly from these techniques are noted and described in the comments sections of the tables.

1972","docAbstract":"Sediment transport via water and ice in the Beaufort Sea off northern Alaska is related to the movement of the surficial waters. As development proceeds along the north slope of alaska, a knowledge of the potential drift trajectories of water, ice, sediment and pollutants will be needed. In an attempt to better define the probable paths and rates of transport, 4200 surface drift cards were dropped during the U.S. Coast Guard WEBSEC cruise of August and September, 1972. The results of this release are the subject of this report. Because the data presented here will be used primarily by those interested in solving problems of transport, the emphasis has been placed on data presentation rather than a detailed analysis of the circulation. Ore bodies are in metamorphosed steeply dipping Precambrian pelitic and calcareous rocks of a roof pendant adjacent to a Cretaceous(?) porphyritic quartz monzonite pluton. Production during 14 years, of operation has been about 8 million pounds of U3O8 from oxidized and reduced ores averaging 0.23 percent U3O8. \r\n\r\nUranium deposits are generally tabular in form and dimensions range up to 380 m long, 210 m wide, and 50 m thick. Deposits are bounded on at least one side by unmineralized intrusive ribs of granitic rock, and thickest mineralized zones invariably occur at depressions in the intrusive contact. Upper limits of some deposits are nearly horizontal, and upper elevations of adjacent mineralized zones separated by ribs of granite are similar. Near surface ore is predominantly autunite, but ore at depth consists of pitchblende and coffinite with abundant pyrite and marcasite. Uranium minerals occur as .disseminations along foliation, replacements, and stockwork fracture-fillings.\r\n\r\nNo stratigraphic controls on ore deposition are recognized. Rather, mineralized zones cut across lithologic boundaries if permeability is adequate. Most ore is in muscovite schist and mica phyllite, but important deposits occur in calc-silicate hornfels. Amphibolite sills and mid-Tertiary dacite dikes locally, carry ore where intensely fractured. High content of iron and sulfur, contained chiefly in FeS2, appear to be an important feature of favorable host rocks.\r\n\r\nGeometry of deposits, structural, and geochemical features suggest that uranium minerals were deposited over a span of time from late Cretaceous to late Tertiary. Ore occurs in but is not offset by a shear zone that displaces mid-Tertiary rocks..
