To obtain spring age-related characters from these fall-collected groupings, we considered parameters of flight feathers retained until after the first breeding season. Parameters measured included: markings on and width of greater secondary coverts, and length, weight, and diameter of primary feathers. The best age categorization was obtained with discriminant analysis based on a combination of the most accurately measured parameters. This analysis, applied to 81 wings with complete measurements, resulted in only 1 being incorrectly aged and 3 placed in a questionable category. Discriminant functions used with covert markings and the three 5th primary parameters were applied to 30 known-age juvenile, hand-reared redhead females, 28 were correctly aged, none was incorrectly aged, and only 2 were placed in the questionable category.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3799901","usgsCitation":"Dane, C., and Johnson, D.H., 1975, Age determination of female redhead ducks: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 39, no. 2, p. 256-263, https://doi.org/10.2307/3799901.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"256","endPage":"263","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":133654,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"39","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db6893d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dane, C.W.","contributorId":95003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dane","given":"C.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311433,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnson, Douglas H. 0000-0002-7778-6641","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7778-6641","contributorId":70327,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"Douglas","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":311432,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Catfish receiving 4.0 I?g dieldrin/g food gained about 17% less weight than the control fish in 210 days and about 35% less weight during the last 126 days of the 210-day period. No growth differences were attributable to the ingestion of 0.4 or 0.8 I?g dieldrin/g of feed. Mortality during the experiment was random and not appreciable. Dieldrin accumulations were characterized by an immediate rapid rise of residue levels in the tissues, followed by a period during which concentrations were relatively stable. Residues in tissues decreased rapidly after dieldrin was withdrawn from the diet. Dieldrin half-life was 9.6 days (mean for the three groups). Theoretical residue concentrations calculated from the growth, feeding, and half-life data were similar to the empirical concentrations, although the theoretical values were consistently the higher. Eleven rocks representing the total compositional sequence have been analyzed for U, Th and REE. Eight of the rocks (group 1) have positive-slope, parallel, chondrite-normalized REE fractionation patterns. Using a computer model, the major element compositions of group 1 whole rocks and observed phenocrysts were used to predict the crystallization histories of increasingly residual liquids, and allowed semi-quantitative verification of origin by fractional crystallization of the olivine-basalt parent magma. Results were combined with mineral-liquid distribution coefficient data to predict trace element abundances, and existing data on Cr, Ni, Sr and Ba were also successfully incorporated in the model. The remaining three rocks (group 2) have nonuniform positive-slope REE fractionation patterns not parallel to group 1 patterns. Rare earth fractionation in a syenite is explained by partial melting of a source rich in clinopyroxene and/or hornblende. The other two rocks of group 2 are explained as hybrids resulting from mixing of syenite and magmas of group 1.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(75)90012-5","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Zielinski, R.A., 1975, Trace element evaluation of a suite of rocks from Reunion Island, Indian Ocean: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 39, no. 5, p. 713-734, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(75)90012-5.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"713","endPage":"734","numberOfPages":"22","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219207,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"39","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb63be4b08c986b326b46","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Zielinski, R. Preseismic changes in elevation in the southern Transverse Ranges were almost uniformly positive and generally episodic. Maximum uplift measured between 1960/61 and 1968/69 was 0.205 m (observed) or 0.200 m (adjusted); it occurred about 30 km northeast of the 1971 epicenter. As much as 0.129 m (observed) of preseismic uplift was also measured about 30 km northwest of the epicenter between 1964 and 1968. A comparison between 1968 and 1969 elevation data revealed 0.078 m (observed) of differential uplift centered about 10 km west of the epicenter; earlier leveling indicates that this uplift began between February 1967 and May 1968. Changes in elevation measured during the interval 1968/69-71 (postearthquake) are interpreted as chiefly coseismic and were concentrated along a 15-km ruptured segment of the east-trending, north-dipping San Fernando fault. These changes were characterized by subsidence of as much as 0.111 m (observed) or 0.092 m (adjusted) south of the fault and a ridge of uplift of up to at least 2.195 m (observed) or 2.196 m (adjusted) immediately north of the fault. </p><p>The more episodic preseismic movements are interpretable as deep-seated creep events on the San Fernando fault. Alternatively, these episodic movements may be due partly to the operation of dilatancy; the onset of the 196849 epicentral uplift accords closely with the initiation of a <i>V</i><sub>p</sub>/<i>V</i><sub>s</sub> anomaly recognized in this same area. The 1968/69-71 elevation changes can be attributed almost entirely to slip on the San Fernando fault. A detector is immersed in the sample and both are irradiated. The fission track density observed in the detector is directly proportional to the uranium concentration. The specific advantages of this technique are: (1) only a small quantity of sample, typically 0.1–1 ml, is needed; (2) no sample concentration is necessary; (3) it is capable of providing analyses with a lower reporting limit of 1 μg per liter; and (4) the actual time spent on an analysis can be only a few minutes. The lake basin is tectonically controlled (Anderson, 1936; Brice, 1953, Sims and Rymer, 1974) and the area seismically active (Coffman and von Hake, 1973).</p><p>Interest in this lake was stimulated by hypotheses developed from a study of sediments in Van Norman Reservoir after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake (Sims, 1973). During this study three zones of deformational structures were found in the 1 m-thick sequence of sediments exposed over about 2 km<sup>2</sup> of the reservoir bottom. These zones were correlated with moderate earthquakes that shook the San Fernando area in 1930, 1952, and 1971. Results of this study, coupled with the experimental formation of deformational structures similar to those from Van Norman Reservoir, led to a search for similar structures in Pleistocene and Holocene lakes and lake sediments in other seismically active areas. Clear Lake, California was chosen specifically because of .:s location near the San Andreas fault and the San Francisco-Oakland urban complex, and the probability of obtaining an uninterrupted sediment record from the present into Pleistocene time. Eight 12 to 15 cm diameter continuous cores were taken from the lake sediments (fig. 1) as part of a study of earthquake induced structures in sediments and the tectonic framework of the Clear Lake basin. The eight cores range in length from 13.87 m to 133.09 m (Table 1).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75144","usgsCitation":"Sims, J.D., and Rymer, M.J., 1975, Preliminary description and interpretation of cores and radiographs from Clear Lake, Lake County, California: Core 7: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-144, 21 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75144.","productDescription":"21 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147491,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0144/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":400393,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0144/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Lake County","otherGeospatial":"Clear Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.93838500976561,\n              38.91133881927712\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.6081085205078,\n              38.91133881927712\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.6081085205078,\n              39.14071226655259\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.93838500976561,\n              39.14071226655259\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.93838500976561,\n              38.91133881927712\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c649","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sims, John D.","contributorId":60202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sims","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172079,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rymer, Michael J. mrymer@usgs.gov","contributorId":1522,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rymer","given":"Michael","email":"mrymer@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":172078,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

A total of 794 stomachs were examined. Four species contained walleye eggs: yellow perch (Perca flavescens), spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius), stonecat (Noturus flavus) and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). Yellow perch were by far the most consistent predators of walleye eggs, and spent female perch consumed more eggs than did males. The average number of walleye eggs in perch stomachs collected on any one day ranged from 36 to 734 for females and from 4 to 237 for males. The loss of walleye eggs due to fish predation appeared to be significant only when the rate of water warming slowed or stopped, thereby creating an extended overlap in the walleye-yellow perch reproductive period. Only under the uncommon condition of an extended time interval between walleye hatching and perch spawning, coupled with the presence of a large quantity of actively feeding perch, could egg predation reduce walleye reproductive success.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ohio Journal of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Wolfert, D.R., Busch, W.N., and Baker, C.T., 1975, Predation by fish on walleye eggs on a spawning reef in western Lake Erie, 1969-71: Ohio Journal of Science, v. 75, no. 3, p. 118-125.","productDescription":"p. 118-125","startPage":"118","endPage":"125","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131537,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"75","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db680026","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfert, David R.","contributorId":49305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfert","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308583,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Busch, Wolf-Dieter N.","contributorId":46039,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busch","given":"Wolf-Dieter","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308582,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Baker, Carl T.","contributorId":25110,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baker","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308581,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Since 1956, marked irregularity in year-class success has developed. Only four year-classes were considered good during 1959&ndash;70. The rate and regularity of water warming during the spring spawning and incubation periods in 1960&ndash;70 had a positive effect on the density of egg deposits and the resulting year-class strength. Rates of warming were not themselves detrimental, but rather the extended length of the incubation period in cool springs increased the exposure of eggs to such negative influences as dislodgment from the spawning reefs by strong current action generated by spring storms, or siltation and low oxygen tensions. The annual brood stock size had much less influence on year-class strength than did water temperature. Reproductive success was unrelated to fluctuations in size of suitable reef spawning area caused by changes in water level. Apparently the usable spawning area at any water level is more than adequate to serve the limited walleye brood stocks.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f75-207","usgsCitation":"Busch, W.N., Scholl, R.L., and Hartman, W.L., 1975, Environmental factors affecting the strength of walleye (<i>Stizostedion vitreum vitreum</i>) year-classes in western Lake Erie, 1960-70: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 32, no. 10, p. 1733-1743, https://doi.org/10.1139/f75-207.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1733","endPage":"1743","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133074,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"10","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a13e4b07f02db6023b3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Busch, Wolf-Dieter N.","contributorId":46039,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busch","given":"Wolf-Dieter","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308078,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Scholl, Russell L.","contributorId":26269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Scholl","given":"Russell","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308077,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hartman, Wilbur L.","contributorId":14763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hartman","given":"Wilbur","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308076,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
