The disease was recognized in Europe in 1949. On the American continent, the disease was first diagnosed in the United States in 1967. Very little is known of DP virus ecology, particularly of the mechanisms of interepizootic survival and movement. The tendency of the IIerpesviruses to enter into a quiescent state after an overt or inapparent infection is a proven characteristic for most of the members of this group. Herpes simplex, which is the model of the Herpesviruses, is said to be the classical example of a persistent recurrent viral infection. Burnet and Williams (4) were the first to recognize this kind of relationship between herpes simplex and its host in 1939. Later, it was found that the reactivation of the virus can be brought on by a variety of stimuli either physiological (menstruation), pathological (anaphylactic shock), chemical (pesticides) or physical (sunburn). This same latency property has been proved for every member of this group of viruses which has been studied adequately, DP is among the few Herpesviruses for which the carrier state has not been demonstrated, but there is circumstantial evidence suggesting it. The carrier state for DP seems to be a likely explanation for the persistence and the particular pattern of movement of this disease.
","language":"English","publisher":"University of Trout were injected with IHNV, and various hematological and biochemical measurements of clinically ill fish were compared to uninfected controls. Infected fish had reduced corpuscular counts, hemoglobin, and packed cell volume, but normal mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. The percentage of immature erythrocytes was increased, but the percentage of leukocytes was unchanged. Differential leukocyte counts showed a significant decrease in neutrophils, increase in lymphocytes, but no change in monocytes. Unidentifiable necrobiotic cells were prevelant in blood smears and hematopoietic tissue imprints. Plasma bicarbonate, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, bilirubin, and osmolality were significantly reduced, but plasma glucose and anterior kidney ascorbate were unchanged. Plasma pH increased and the alpha fractions of the serum proteins were altered. No change was found in plasma enzymes, except that a LDH isozyme was significantly increased. The alkali reserve was diminished and alterations in acid-base and fluid balance occurred. Death probably resulted from a severe electrolyte and fluid imbalance caused by renal failure.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Society for Microbiology","doi":"10.1128/iai.11.1.171-179.1975","usgsCitation":"Amend, D., and Smith, L., 1975, Pathophysiology of infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus disease in rainbow trout: Hematological and blood chemical changes in moribund fish: Infection and Immunity, v. 11, no. 1, p. 171-179, https://doi.org/10.1128/iai.11.1.171-179.1975.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"171","endPage":"179","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480637,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1128/iai.11.1.171-179.1975","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":335437,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"11","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58a4254be4b0c825128ad4f1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Amend, D.F.","contributorId":63082,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Amend","given":"D.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":668930,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Smith, L.","contributorId":23477,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":668931,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

It is important to know the relationship of nitrogen and oxygen when we are concerned with the total gas pressure in water. Where water becomes aerated at dams or falls, oxygen and nitrogen are usually about equally saturated, however, many of the samples analyzed from the Columbia River indicate that nitrogen is often about 7% higher than oxygen when expressed as a percentage. When oxygen is removed from water by metabolic and chemical action, or when oxygen is added to the water by photosynthesis, there is a definite change in the ratio of oxygen and the inert gases (mainly nitrogen with some argon, etc.). This present study shows the effect of varying the oxygen and nitrogen ratio in water on fingerling coho salmon, Oncorh.llnchllS kislltch, while maintaining a constant total gas pressure. The primary purpose of these experiments was to determine differences in lethality of various gas ratios of oxygen and nitrogen at a constant total gas pressure of 119%. I also wished to determine whether there was a difference in susceptibility between sizes and stocks of juvenile coho. Also to be examined was the effect of reducing the oJl:ygen while holding the nitrogen constant.
","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Rucker, R., 1975, Gas bubble disease: mortalities of coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch, in water with constant total gas pressure and different oxygen-nitrogen ratios: Fishery Bulletin, v. 73, no. 4, p. 915-918.","productDescription":"4 p. The ESIAC system developed by the Stanford Research Institute, was used to obtain enlargements and false-color renditions of turbidity plumes. After projection on a video screen, individual turbidity features were analyzed, mapped, and photographed.

The Niagara River plume, as much as 500 square kilometres in area, is by far, the largest turbidity feature in the lake. Based on image tonal comparisons, turbidity in the Welland Canal is usually higher than that in any other watercourse discharging into the lake throughout the shipping season. Somewhat less turbid water enters the lake from the Port Dalhousie diversion channel and the Genesee River. Relatively clear water resulting from the deposition of suspended matter in numerous upstream lakes is discharged by the Niagara and Oswego rivers.

Plume analysis corroborates the presence of a prevailing eastward flowing longshore current along the entire south shore. This current is most persistent at the Oswego River outlet but is quite variable in the Rochester embayment, where rapid shifts in water movement were occasionally detected in LANDSAT images. The position of the spring thermal bar, a zone, of maximum density water corresponding to the 4°C isotherm, was approximately located in images obtained during April 1973. Although eastward moving currents were detected on the inshore side of the thermal bar, westward moving counter currents seem to be dominant along its offshore side.

Plumes generated by beach erosion were readily detected in the images. Such areas are identified by light to very light, long, narrow plumes paralleling the coastline. Extensive areas of the south shore are subject to erosion, but the most severely affected beaches are situated between Fifty Mile Pt., Ontario and Thirty Mile Pt., N.Y., along the Rochester embayment, and between Sodus Bay and Nine Mile Pt.

Color illustrations of figure accession numbers EDC-010077 to EDC-010106 are available for purchase from the EROS Data Center, Sioux Falls, South Dakota 57198.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr75249","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Aeronautics Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland","usgsCitation":"Pluhowski, E.J., 1975, Dynamics of turbidity plumes in Lake Ontario: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-249, Report: ix, 59 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75249.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 59 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149041,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0249/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":462666,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0249/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Canada, United States","otherGeospatial":"Lake Ontario","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.99172224212556,\n              45.15721980352575\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.99172224212556,\n              42.37218583599275\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.39757490950474,\n              42.37218583599275\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.39757490950474,\n              45.15721980352575\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.99172224212556,\n              45.15721980352575\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a59e4b07f02db62f706","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pluhowski, Edward J.","contributorId":87911,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pluhowski","given":"Edward","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":171172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The piscicide was biologically unavailable at the high pH, and this unavailability was reversed by decreasing the pH of water solutions. The toxicity of antimycin was related to the amount of un-ionized molecules; however, the dissociation curve resulting from the published pKa of 5.1 does not agree with the implied dissociation when based on toxicity. Toxicity of antimycin decreased gradually from pH 6.5 to 8.5 and abruptly from 8.5 to 9.5 with carp (Cyprinus carpio), green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus), and bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus). As previously suggested, water hardness had little or no effect on toxicity.
","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/f75-100","usgsCitation":"Marking, L.L., 1975, Effects of pH on toxicity of antimycin to fish: Journal of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, v. 32, no. 6, p. 769-773, https://doi.org/10.1139/f75-100.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"769","endPage":"773","numberOfPages":"5","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":197003,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db611b25","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Marking, L. The VVND virus was isolated from 0.04% of 9,446 free-flying wild birds, 0.76% of 4,367 semidomestic birds, and 1.01% of 3,780 exotic birds examined. Three house sparrows and 1 crow directly associated with infected poultry flocks were the only free-flying wild birds from which VVND virus was isolated. Among semidomestic species, ducks, quail, chukars, pheasants, peafowl, pigeons, and doves were found to be infected. Psittacines, pittas, and toucans accounted for 92% of the VVND virus isolations from exotic birds. In addition, domestic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) was isolated from 0.29% of the free-flying wild birds, from 1.65% of the semidomestic birds, and from 0.19% of the exotic birds collected. Hemagglutination-inhibition against domestic NDV was demonstrated in 0.24% of 3,796 wild bird serums, 8.28% of 2,004 semidomestic bird serums, and 3.90% of 231 exotic bird serums tested.Although few free-flying wild birds were infected with VVND virus in this epornitic, the isolation of domestic NDV strains from free-flying wild ducks and mourning doves suggests the potential for transportation of NDV over long distances by migratory birds.","language":"English","publisher":"American Veterinary Medical Association","issn":"00031488","usgsCitation":"Pearson, G., and McCann, M., 1975, The role of indigenous wild, semidomestic, and exotic birds in the epizootiology of velogenic viscerotropic Newcastle disease in southern California, 1972-1973: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, v. 167, no. 7, p. 610-614.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"610","endPage":"614","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133720,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"167","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0de4b07f02db5fd01a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pearson, G.L.","contributorId":83868,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pearson","given":"G.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"McCann, M.K.","contributorId":73556,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"McCann","given":"M.K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":310893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
