These zones are correlated with moderate earthquakes that shook the San Fernando area in 1930, 1952, and 1971. The success of this study, coupled with the experimental formation of deformational structures similar to those of the Van Norman reservoir, led to a search for similar structures in Pleistocene and Holocene lakes and lake sediments in other seismically active areas. Thus, studies have been started in Pleistocene and Holocene silty and sandy lake sediments in the Imperial Valley, southeastern California; Clear Lake, in northern California; and the Puget Sound area of Washington. The Imperial Valley study has yielded spectacular results: five zones of structures in the upper 10 m of Late Holocene sediments near Brawley have been correlated over an area of approximately 100 km2, using natural outcrops. These structures are similar to those of the Van Norman reservoir and are interpreted to represent at least five moderate to large earthquakes that affected the southern Imperial Valley area during Late Holocene time. The Clear Lake study has provided ambiguous results with respect to determination of earthquake recurrence intervals because the cores studied are in clayey rich in organic material sediments that have low liquefaction potential. A study of Late Pleistocene varved glacio-lacustrine sediments has been started in the Puget Sound area of Washington, and thirteen sites have been examined. One has yielded 18.75 m of sediments that contains 1,804 varves and fourteen deformed zones interpreted as being caused by earthquake, because they are identical to structures formed experimentally by simulated seismic shaking. Correlation of deformational structures with seismic events is based on:

(1) proximity to presently active seismic zones;

(2) presence of potentially liquefiable sediments;

(3) similarity to structures formed experimentally;

(4) small-scale internal structures within deformed zones that suggest liquefaction;

(5) structures restricted to single stratigraphic intervals;

(6) zones of structures correlatable over large areas; and

(7) absence of detectable influence by slopes, slope failures, or other sedimentological, biological, or deformational processes.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0040-1951(75)90139-0","issn":"00401951","usgsCitation":"Sims, J.D., 1975, Determining earthquake recurrence intervals from deformational structures in young lacustrine sediments: Tectonophysics, v. 29, no. 1-4, p. 141-152, https://doi.org/10.1016/0040-1951(75)90139-0.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"141","endPage":"152","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219113,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"29","issue":"1-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ffeee4b0c8380cd4f4a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sims, John D.","contributorId":60202,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sims","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":357312,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The total abundance of the REE in the least-altered limestone is 4–12 ppm, and their distribution patterns are believed to be dominated by the carbonate minerals. The abundances of the REE in the marbles and their sedimentary precursors are comparable, but the distribution patterns are not. Eu is enriched over the other REE in the marbles, and stratigraphically upward in the formation (samples located progressively further from the heat source), the light REE become less enriched relative to the heavy REE. The Eu anomaly is attributed to its ability, unique among the REE, to change from the 3+ to 2+ oxidation state. Whether this results in preferential mobilization of the other REE or whether this reflects the composition of the pore fluid during metamorphism is unknown. Stratigraphically selective depletion of the heavy REE may be attributed to more competition for the REE between fluid and carbonate minerals in the lower strata relative to the upper strata. This competition could have been caused by changes in the temperature of the pore fluid or to the greater resistance to solution of the dolomite in the lower parts of the formation than the calcite in the upper parts.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0009-2541(75)90088-1","issn":"00092541","usgsCitation":"Jarvis, J., Wildeman, T., and Banks, N., 1975, Rare earths in the Leadville Limestone and its marble derivates: Chemical Geology, v. 16, no. 1, p. 27-37, https://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2541(75)90088-1.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"27","endPage":"37","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219672,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9523e4b0c8380cd8181f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jarvis, J.C.","contributorId":51906,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jarvis","given":"J.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358200,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wildeman, T.R.","contributorId":30248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wildeman","given":"T.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358199,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Banks, N.G.","contributorId":60635,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Banks","given":"N.G.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":358201,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

A total of 794 stomachs were examined. Four species contained walleye eggs: yellow perch (Perca flavescens), spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius), stonecat (Noturus flavus) and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni). Yellow perch were by far the most consistent predators of walleye eggs, and spent female perch consumed more eggs than did males. The average number of walleye eggs in perch stomachs collected on any one day ranged from 36 to 734 for females and from 4 to 237 for males. The loss of walleye eggs due to fish predation appeared to be significant only when the rate of water warming slowed or stopped, thereby creating an extended overlap in the walleye-yellow perch reproductive period. Only under the uncommon condition of an extended time interval between walleye hatching and perch spawning, coupled with the presence of a large quantity of actively feeding perch, could egg predation reduce walleye reproductive success.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ohio Journal of Science","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Wolfert, D.R., Busch, W.N., and Baker, C.T., 1975, Predation by fish on walleye eggs on a spawning reef in western Lake Erie, 1969-71: Ohio Journal of Science, v. 75, no. 3, p. 118-125.","productDescription":"p. 118-125","startPage":"118","endPage":"125","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131537,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"75","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acfe4b07f02db680026","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolfert, David R.","contributorId":49305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolfert","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308583,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Busch, Wolf-Dieter N.","contributorId":46039,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Busch","given":"Wolf-Dieter","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308582,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Baker, Carl T.","contributorId":25110,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baker","given":"Carl","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308581,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Since 1956, marked irregularity in year-class success has developed. Only four year-classes were considered good during 1959–70. The rate and regularity of water warming during the spring spawning and incubation periods in 1960–70 had a positive effect on the density of egg deposits and the resulting year-class strength. Rates of warming were not themselves detrimental, but rather the extended length of the incubation period in cool springs increased the exposure of eggs to such negative influences as dislodgment from the spawning reefs by strong current action generated by spring storms, or siltation and low oxygen tensions. The annual brood stock size had much less influence on year-class strength than did water temperature. Reproductive success was unrelated to fluctuations in size of suitable reef spawning area caused by changes in water level. K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary of Michigan State University in southwestern Michigan. For the past six years accurate weekly counts have been made of resident and migrant waterfowl using Wintergreen Lake. During the past four years Wintergreen Lake has been the site of extensive limnological investigations relating nutrient dynamics and primary productivity. These limnological investigations suggested nutrients contributed by migrant Canada geese were the chief cause of hypereutrophic primary productivity conditions in Wintergreen Lake. Until January 1970, the unpredictable habits of wild Canada geese using Wintergreen Lake prevented accurate estimation of nutrients contributed ton the lake in the form of goose feces. An opportunity to measure this source of nutrients was presented on 9 to 11 January 1970 when about 600 late fall migrant Canada geese rested part of three days in a clearly defined area on newly fallen snow covering frozen Wintergreen Lake. During their stay on the lake accurate records were kept of goose numbers, their location on the lake surface, hours spent on the ice and hours spent feeding off the lake. After the geese left on 11 January 1970, a random sampling procedure was used to measure the density of droppings deposited within the area used by the geese on the lake surface.","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1080/03680770.1974.11896143","usgsCitation":"Manny, B.A., Wetzel, R.G., and Johnson, W., 1975, Annual contribution of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus by migrant Canada geese to a hardwater lake: International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology, v. 19, no. 2, p. 949-951, https://doi.org/10.1080/03680770.1974.11896143.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"949","endPage":"951","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130332,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"19","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67bb21","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Manny, Bruce A. 0000-0002-4074-9329 bmanny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4074-9329","contributorId":3699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manny","given":"Bruce","email":"bmanny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":308358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wetzel, Robert G.","contributorId":13507,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wetzel","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnson, W.C.","contributorId":68003,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"W.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308360,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The time from fertilization to median hatch was inversely related to temperature, and ranged from 41.7 days at 10.0 C to 182 days at 0.5 C. The percentage hatch was highest (70.9-73.3%) at 4.0, 5.9, and 7.8 C, and was greatly reduced (6.0-28.4%) at 0.5, 2.0, and 10.0 C. The mortality of embryos was greatest during the early stages of development. Abnormally developed fry were most frequent (85.9% of the hatch) at 10.0 C, and least frequent (2.8%) at 4.0 C. Mean lengths of fry at hatching were shorter at 7.8 and 10.0 C (12.4 and 8.8 mm, respectively) than at lower temperatures (13.1 to 13.5 mm).
