Rabbit or goat antikidney disease serum and appropriately labeled immunoglobulin was found to be specific for the KD bacterium. The technique was superior to examination of gram-stained smears for detection of small numbers of KD bacteria. Since 1956, marked irregularity in year-class success has developed. Only four year-classes were considered good during 1959&ndash;70. The rate and regularity of water warming during the spring spawning and incubation periods in 1960&ndash;70 had a positive effect on the density of egg deposits and the resulting year-class strength. Rates of warming were not themselves detrimental, but rather the extended length of the incubation period in cool springs increased the exposure of eggs to such negative influences as dislodgment from the spawning reefs by strong current action generated by spring storms, or siltation and low oxygen tensions. The annual brood stock size had much less influence on year-class strength than did water temperature. Reproductive success was unrelated to fluctuations in size of suitable reef spawning area caused by changes in water level. Five copepods,&nbsp;</span><i>Cyclops bicuspidatus thomasi</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Diaptomus ashlandi</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>D</i><span>.&nbsp;</span><i>sicilis</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Limnocalanus macrurus</i><span>, and&nbsp;</span><i>Senecella calanoides</i><span>&nbsp;were present in the plankton throughout the year while three other copepods,&nbsp;</span><i>Diaptomus minutus</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Epischura lacustris</i><span>, and&nbsp;</span><i>Mesocyclops edax</i><span>, along with all cladocerans, were present only during summer and fall. Five species of copepods,&nbsp;</span><i>Diaptomus sicilis</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>D</i><span>.&nbsp;</span><i>minutus</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Limnocalanus macrurus</i><span>,&nbsp;</span><i>Senecella calanoides</i><span>, and&nbsp;</span><i>Epischura lacustris</i><span>&nbsp;produced a single generation annually; three other copepods and all cladocerans produced two or more generations. Duck plague was diagnosed in black ducks, mallards, pintail-mallard hybrids, redheads, common mergansers, common golden eyes, canvasbacks, American widgeon, wood ducks, and Canada geese, indicating the general susceptibility of ducks to duck plague. Clinical signs observed in mallards were droopiness, polydipsia, lethargy, reduced wariness, weakness, reluctance to fly, swimming in circles, bloody diarrhea, bloody fluid draining from the nares and bill, and terminal convulsions.Because the mallard was the most numerous and heavily infected species during the Lake Andes epizootic, gross and microscopic lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, spleen, thymus, bursa of Fabricius, heart, lung, bone marrow, pancreas, and ovaries were described. Lesions of the esophagus and cloaca were in the stratified submucosal glands. In the small and large intestine, lesions were located in lymphocytic aggregates, lamina propria, and crypt epithelium. Hemorrhages and necrosis of hepatocytes and bile duct epithelium were noted in the liver. Diffuse necrosis of lymphocytic and reticuloendothelial tissue were evident in the spleen, bursa of Fabricius, and thymus. Hemorrhages in other tissues such as the lung and heart were often associated with lymphoid nodules, while those in organs such as the pancreas were associated with acinar necrosis. Rhyolitic domes 11-17 m.y. old are widespread, particularly in the easternmost part of the state and in adjacent parts of Idaho and Nevada. Domes younger than 11 m.y. occur principally in two 250-km-long belts that trend N. 75° W. On the basis of 47 K/Ar radiometric dates, the rhyolitic domes in and between these belts show a remarkably well defined monotonic age progression from less than 1 m.y. old in the west to about 10 m.y. old on the east. The progression in age of the domes is sufficiently well defined that the ages of the domes can be smoothly contoured and the age of most undated domes can be estimated to within 1 m.y. The age contours are oblique to the trend of the two belts; domes younger than 4 m.y. occur only in and near the northern belt. The rate of progression is about 1 cm/yr for domes younger than about 5 m.y. and 3 cm/yr for domes 5-10 m.y. old. The change in rate of progression about 5 m.y. ago is accompanied by a change in orientation of the age contours and in area of outcrop. Inferred vents for dated rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs younger than 10 m.y. are located in areas where domes are approximately the same age as the tuffs and thus also fit the age progression.</p><p>Most electric-power-producing geothermal fields in the world occur in or proximal to areas of young silicic volcanic rocks. Food consumption by the alfalfa-fed ducks was significantly gr 0.01) than the other two groups. All digestive organs of the alfalfa-fed ducks were significan (P &lt; 0.01) than those of the corn- and turkey starter-fed ducks at the end of the study. It is that mallards can adapt rapidly to fibrous, relatively indigestible foods. The fault zone generally dips southwestward toward the adjacent San Andreas fault at low to steep angles, and the southwest block has moved upward and northeastward. Thrusting across the fault zone has produced large-scale offset, which may increase to the southeast. If strike-slip movement has occurred, it has probably been minor. The correspondence of the geochemical anomalies to the negative gravity anomaly suggests the presence of altered and mineralized rock and a Tertiary intrusive body at depth. Quartzite (Cambrian). Regional and local geologic relationships indicate that this intervening unit is definitely the Bolsa Quartzite. The Bolsa ranges in thickness from at least 200 ft at several localities in the Vekol Mountains to 0 ft over a positive area underlain by Precambrian diabase which has intruded the Apache Group. Previous observations that the diabase intruded the quartzite unit (thereby making this quartzite unit the Troy Quartzite) have been reinterpreted; all nonfaulted exposures of the basal contact of the quartzite unit show sedimentary relationships.
