During the winter, local temperature increases of 34°F (19°C) were sometimes observed at the surface as heated water spread out on top of the cooler, more-dense, lake water, affecting areas as large as 2,590 acres (1,048 square hectometers) with temperature increases averaging up to 12°F (6.7°C) higher than natural lake temperatures. In the summer average temperature increases at the surface seldom exceeded 6°F (3.3°C) and the maximum area affected was 2,570 acres (1,040 square hectometers).</p><p>Forced evaporation from the heated part of Hyco Lake increased in proportion to the added heat, reaching a maximum of 23.1 inches (586 millimeters) in 1970, as compared to 55.6 inches (1,412 millimeters) of natural evaporation for that year.</p><p>In 1969, over the heated area, 210,600 British thermal units per square foot per year or 2,407,510,000 joules per square meter per year of heat were added to the lake. Of this amount, about 58 percent of the heat was utilized for evaporation, 24 percent for back radiation, 8.0 percent was conducted as sensible heat from the lake, 1.0 percent was removed through outflow, and 0.04 percent was advected by the evaporated water. ,{"id":29640,"text":"wri7347 - 1974 - Erosion and sediment yields in mountain watersheds of the Transverse Ranges Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, California; analysis of rates and processes","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2018-10-30T15:07:26","indexId":"wri7347","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1974","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":342,"text":"Water-Resources Investigations Report","code":"WRI","active":false,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"73-47","title":"Erosion and sediment yields in mountain watersheds of the Transverse Ranges Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, California; analysis of rates and processes","docAbstract":"<p>Major-storm and long-term erosion rates in mountain watersheds of the western Transverse Ranges of Ventura County are estimated to range from low values that will not require the construction of catchments or channel-stabilization structures to values as high as those recorded anywhere for comparable bedrock erodibilities.</p><p>A major reason for this extreme variability is the high degree of tectonic activity in the area--watersheds are locally being uplifted by at least as much as 25 feet per 1,000 years, yet the maximum extrapolated rate of denudation measured over the longest available period of record is 7.5 feet per 1,000 years adjusted to a drainage area of 0.5 square mile. Evidence of large amounts of uplift continuing into historic time includes structurally overturned strata of Pleistocene age, active thrust faulting, demonstrable stream antecedence, uplifted and deformed terraces, and other results of base-level change seen in stream channels. Such evidence is widespread in the Transverse Ranges, and aspects of the landscape, such as drainage-net characteristics and hillslope morphology, are locally more a function of tectonic activity than of denudational process. Many of the 72 study watersheds are located on frontal escarpments of mountain blocks cut by recently active thrust faults, along which the upper part of the drainage basin has overthrusted either the lower part of the basin or the adjacent valley area.</p><p>To define erosion rates in 35 small watersheds in the western Transverse Ranges, a group of 37 similar watersheds with measured sediment yields in debris basins was selected from the eastern Transverse Ranges in Los Angeles County. Sediment yields from this group of watersheds during the record-breaking 1969 storms ranged from relatively low rates to values equivalent to reduction of the entire land surface of a watershed by more than 2 inches.</p><p>Correlation of erosion rates from the watersheds with measured rates to the group with unknown rates required definition of the chief factors that control the erosion rates. Numerous types and combinations of variables measuring physiography, soil erodibility, slope stability, hydrologic factors, wildfire effects, vegetation, and land use were analyzed by regression. A slope-stability variable retained in regressions at significant levels was the proportion of watershed drainage area underlain by slope failures, a logical measure of increased erodibility caused by uplift.</p><p>The importance in the area of debris flows, mudflows, and mass movements--forms of sediment transport not involving normal aqueous entrainment--is also a reflection of the active tectonic setting of the Transverse Ranges. Implicit in the detailed study of selected physiographic and slope-failure variables was the logical assumption that correlation with the probability of transport by these exotic but quantitatively important sedimentation processes would be achieved.</p><p>So prominent and widespread was evidence of debris flows in the small study watersheds after the 1969 storms, that it was possible to formulate a model for the dispersal of sediment in such watersheds: Lateral supply of sediment to stream channels is a relatively continuous process, accomplished in significant part during the dry season by dry-sliding, in addition to wet-season contributions from overland flow and mass movements. During periods without major storms, stream channels undergo more-or-less time-continuous fill. Then, during a storm of high recurrence interval, channel-bed material is mobilized and dispersed in large part by debris flows--coarse granular slurries, some of which are induced by mass movements triggered by the storm. Channels undergo substantial net scour, accomplished by removal of bed material in debris flows and by scour during recession flow. The evolution of this basin during Oligocene and early Miocene time and the relationship of its sedimentary record to the tectonic history is an important chapter in the Tertiary history of California. \r\n\r\nThe Simmler Formation, of provincial Oligocene to early Miocene age, unconformably overlies basement rocks and an Upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary marine sequence. It consists of a sandstone facies, which is mostly a variegated sequence of sandstone and mudstone occurring in fining-upward cycles, and a conglomerate facies, which occurs around the southwest and southeast margins of the basin. \r\n\r\nThe conformably overlying Vaqueros Formation, of provincial early to middle Miocene age, is subdivided from base upward ,into the Quail Canyon Sandstone, Soda Lake Shale, and Painted Rock Sandstone Members. The Vaqueros intertongues eastward, southeastward, and northward with the continental Caliente Formation and is conformably overlain by the Monterey Shale. In the Caliente Range, northeast of major thrust faults, the Vaqueros may reach a thickness of 8,700 feet (2,650 m). Around the margin of the basin, the formation is much thinner--locally only 200 feet (60 m) thick--and is generally undivided. The Quail Canyon Sandstone Member is composed of cross-bedded or planar-stratified sandstone. The Soda Lake Shale Member consists mostly of siltstone and platy shale with a few thin sandstone interbeds. The Painted Rock Sandstone Member, the thickest and coarsest member, consists mostly of large lenticular bodies of thick-bedded coarse-grained sandstone and thinner units of siltstone. Petrology and paleocurrent studies indicate that, in a given subarea, the Simmler and Vaqueros Formations were derived from the same source terrane and that the sediments were usually transported in the same general direction. Crystalline basement terranes to the north and south were the primary sources, but the Upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary marine sequence made substantial contributions along the southwest side of the basin. \r\n\r\nThe sandstone facies of the Simmler Formation is interpreted as an alluvial plain depositional complex formed by through-flowing low-sinuosity streams, and the conglomerate facies is interpreted as alluvial fan deposits. The Vaqueros Formation in the Caliente Range forms a transgressive-regressive sequence. The Quail Canyon Sandstone and lowermost Soda Lake Shale Members represent the transgressive phase, are interpreted as beach-nearshore and offshore deposits, and are locally the marine \r\nequivalents of the upper part of the Simmler conglomerate facies. The remainder of the Soda Lake Shale Member and the Painted Rock Sandstone Member represent the regressive phase and are interpreted as a complex of deltaic and shelf-slope deposits that prograded over basinal shales and turbidites. \r\n\r\nThe reconstructed basin history began in the Oligocene with alluvial plain sedimentation in an area of relatively low relief. This was interrupted in the early Miocene (ca. 25 m.y. B.P.) by the beginning of a period of crustal extension, probably related to the first interaction of the Pacific and North American plates, resulting in the formation of a rapidly subsiding marine basin. This crustal extension was followed by a period of north-south compression in the Pliocene and Pleistocene, which caused the thick accumulation of sediments in the basin to be folded and thrust over the thinner basin-margin section. Flooding of Butte Basin from the Sacramento River will occur whenever flow in the main channel at Butte City exceeds 90,000 cubic feet per second (2550 cubic metres per second), a discharge with a recurrence interval of about 3 years. The distribution of floodflow across the basin is not uniform. During the flood of January 24, 1970, 84 percent of the total discharge resulted from overland flow from the Sacramento River and 16 percent from flooding on Butte Creek. \r\n\r\nWhen flooding in Butte Basin is severe enough to affect State Highway 162, overflow across the road first occurs between bridges 11-21 and 11-22. The construction of bridges or culverts at two locations between bridges 11-21 and 11-22 would increase the period of time that the road is usable. \r\n\r\nAnalysis of the present roadway, bridge geometry, and ground elevations adjacent to the roadway indicates that backwater is less than 0.6 foot (0.2 metre) for flows of the magnitude experienced during the flood of January 24, 1970. The concurrent maximum velocity of flow at the bridges is 6.8 feet per second (2.1 metres per second). Part of the backwater is caused by ground elevations adjacent to the roadway that are, at many locations, higher than the road crown. \r\n\r\nIf the roadway embankment were raised to prevent overtopping by a flood equivalent to that of January 24, 1970, without increasing the capacity or number of the bridges, backwater greater than 0.5 foot (0.2 metre) would result upstream from 6 of the 15 bridges on State Highway 162, and velocities would be excessive. Additional bridge openings to discharge a total of 37,800 cubic feet per second (1070 cubic metres per second) would be required for at least six locations if backwater and velocity were to be kept to levels similar to those observed for present conditions. \r\n\r\nDuring the flood of November 12, 1973, water-surface elevations recorded in several of the overflow channels of Butte Creek were higher than those observed during the January 1970 flood even though the discharge was less. The flooding was caused by a major rainstorm that extended from Montana through Idaho and Washington. The most damage occurred in the Kootenai River drainage, centering around the town of Libby. Also unusually high flows occurred on some streams in the Clark Fork basin. Throughout the area, ice jams contributed to much of the overbank flooding.\r\n\r\nBoth the towns of Troy and Libby were partly flooded, but damage was greatest in and near Libby. Flood damage was estimated to be $4.9 million. No flood fatalities were listed. Most of the smaller streams equaled or exceeded a 50-year flood. A summary of flood stages and discharges for 24 sites in the Kootenai River drainage and 8 sites in the Clark Fork drainage is tabulated. A map shows the extent of flooding in the Libby area. Most occur on the flanks of basins, along Basin and Range (late Miocene to Holocene) faults, while some occur in the inner parts of the basins. Surface temperatures of the springs range from slightly above ambient to, boiling; some springs are superheated. Maximum subsurface water temperatures calculated on the basis of quartz solubility range as high as 252?C, although most are below 190?C. Flows range from a trickle to several hundred liters per minute. \r\n\r\nThe Nevada geothermal systems differ markedly from the power-producing system at The Geysers, Calif., and from those areas with a high potential, for power production (e.g., Yellowstone Park, Wyo.; Jemez Mountains, N. Mex.). These other systems are associated with Quaternary felsic volcanic rocks and probably derive their heat from cooling magma rather high in the crust. In northern Nevada, however, felsic volcanic rocks are virtually all older than 10 million years, and. analogous magmatic heat sources are, therefore, probably lacking. \r\n\r\nNevada is part of an area of much higher average heat flow than the rest of the United States. In north-central Nevada, geothermal gradients are as great as 64?C per kilometer in bedrock and even higher in basin fill. Fresh water, which is defined as containing 250 milligrams per liter chloride or less, in the Chicot aquifer is characteristically hard and high in iron concentration; in this area the hardness is generally 200-300 milligrams per liter. The soft-water zone, containing water with a hardness of less than 60 milligrams per liter, is anomalous and occurs in an area where the basal part of the aquifer is separated from the main body of the aquifer by a thick clay layer. The zone has been mapped in parts of St. Martin and adjoining Lafayette Parishes.\r\n\r\nAlthough the exact areal extent of the zone cannot be determined with available data, it appears to be sufficiently large that the soft water should prove to be an important asset to the area. The water could be used by itself or mixed with either hard or slightly salty water (more than 250 milligrams per liter chloride) to provide a blend that would require little or no treatment for most purposes. Because of the proximity of salty water in much of the area, careful planning and monitoring will be necessary to maintain the soft-water zone as a dependable supply of usable water.
