The geology of t he coastal zone and offshore islands from Point Conception to the Mexican boundary serves as a frame of reference from which rock units and structures can be extrapolated into submerged parts of the borderland (sheet 1). Such extrapolations should be used with caution, for the tectonic evolution and depositional history of parts of the borderland may not have paralleled those of the mainland. A nomograph that allows conversion of the velocity response envelope to a displacement response envelope and a pseudo-absolute acceleration response envelope spectrum is also presented. Included among the records analyzed are such important accelerograms as those from El Centro, 1940, Olympia, 1949, Taft, 1952, San Francisco, 1957, Park-field, 1966, San Fernando, 1971 and Managua, 1972. Time-duration spectra showing the number of cycles for a particular period of the response envelope above different levels are presented. The spatial variation is described by the use of sample statistics such as minima, maxima, and means of the variables at each station. The temporal variation is described by using nonparametric statistical testing procedures to assess time trends in the data at each station.</p><p>Evaluation of the coefficients (mean, amplitude, phase coefficient] derived by harmonic analysis of available daily stream-temperature records indicates adequate depiction of yearly seasonal variability and provides information relative to spatial variation in stream temperatures at most sites. Lowest harmonic amplitudes, which are indicative of little seasonal variability in stream temperature, were observed in Florida, along the eastern Gulf coast, and along the Pacific coast. Greatest annual variations in stream temperature exists in the Souris, Red (of the North), and Missouri River basins.</p><p>Temporal variations in stream temperature denoted by significant changes (at the 99 percent level of confidence) in annual harmonic coefficients were indicated at 15 of 80 stations used in the evaluation. Trends in stream temperature were found to exist at one or more stations in each of the six following areas: the Atlantic coast above Florida; Florida and the eastern Gulf; the Souris River, Red River of the North, and Missouri River basins; the Texas Gulf and Rio Grande area; the Colorado River basin; and the Pacific coast area.</p><p>Significant trends (at the 99 percent level of confidence) were found in the long-term streamflow chemical quality record at 15 of 88 stations analyzed. Of these stations, 10 showed an increase in levels of specific conductances while 5- showed a decrease. An experimental study to test the feasibility of preparing such a map and its usefulness in evaluating earthquake hazards was initiated jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and the former Seismology Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; financial support was provided by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. It was hoped that the study would develop evidence for the existence of tectonic regions or structural provinces that are useful in defining parameters of seismic hazard in relation to engineered structures. Figure 1 is a location map showing the stream and sampling sites.</p><p>As the water tracer moved downstream and dispersed, its concentration was measured periodically at State Highway 30 (river mile 24.5) and near Gonzales (river mile 17.7). Time-concentration curves developed for these two sites are shown in figures 2 and 3, respectively.</p><p>This study was intended to include observations of the travel at the dam at river mile 14.2; hut high rainfall on April 12 disrupted New River and the tracer, and the study was terminated. However, the leading edge of the dispersed tracer was observed at river mile 14.7 before the study was stopped. The lapsed time and the location of the leading edge of the tracer from time of injection are given in table 1.</p><p>A discharge of 4.9 ft3/s (cubic feet per second) was measured on April 3 at State Highway 30, and 3.7 ft3/s was measured on April 6 at river mile 17.7 near Gonzales. The unproven methods of disposal include (1) a very deep drill hole (30,000-50,000 ft or 9,140-15,240 m), (2) a matrix of (an array of multiple) drill holes (1,000-20,000 ft or 305-6,100 m), (3) a mined chamber (1,000-10,000 ft or 305-3,050 m), (4) a cavity with separate manmade structures (1,000-10,000 ft or 305-3,050 m), and (5) an exploded cavity (2,000-20,000 ft or 610-6,100 m) o \r\n\r\nThe geohydrologic investigation is made on the presumption that the concepts or methods of disposal are technically feasible. Field and laboratory experiments in the future may demonstrate whether or not any of the methods are practical and safe. All the conclusions drawn are tentative pending experimental confirmation. The investigation focuses principally on the geohydrologic possibilities of several methods of disposal in rocks other than salt. Disposal in mined chambers in salt is currently under field investigation, and this disposal method has been intensely investigated and evaluated by various workers under the sponsorship of the Atomic Energy Commission. \r\n\r\nOf the various geohydrologic factors that must be considered in the selection of optimum waste-disposal sites, the most important is hydrologic isolation to assure that the wastes will be safely contained within a small radius of the emplacement zone. To achieve this degree of hydrologic isolation, the host rock for the wastes must have very low permeability and the site must be virtually free of faults. In addition, the locality should be in (1) an area of low seismic risk where the possibility of large earthquakes rupturing the emplacement zone is very low, (2) where the possibility- of flooding by rise is very low, (3) where a possible return of glacial or pluvial climate will not cause potentially hazardous changes in surface- or ground-water regimens, and (4) where danger of exhumation by erosion is nil. The geographic location for an optimum site is one that is far removed from major drainages, lakes, and oceans, where population density is low, and where the topographic relief is gentle in order to avoid steep surface-water drainage gradients that would allow rapid distribution of contaminants in case of accident. \r\n\r\nThe most suitable medium for the unproven deep drill-hole, matrix-holes, and exploded-cavity methods appears to be crystalline rocks, either intrusive igneous or metamorphic because of their potentially low permeabilities and high mechanical strengths. Salt (either in thick beds or stable domes), tuff, and possibly shale appear to be suitable for mined chambers and cavities with separate manmade structures. Salt appears to be suitable because of its very low permeability, high thermal conductivity, and natural plasticity. Tuff and shale appear suitable because of their very low permeabilities and high ion-exchange capacities. Sedimentary rocks other than shale and volcanic rocks, exclusive of tuff, are considered to be generally unsuitable for waste emplacement because of their potentially high permeabilities. \r\n\r\nAreas that appear to satisfy most geohydrologic requirements for the deep drill hole and the matrix holes include principally (1) the stable continental interior where the sedimentary cover is thin or absent, (2) the shield area of the North-Central States, and (3) the metamorphic belt of Eastern United States--primarily the Piedmont. Monthly measurements were attempted at 44 sites in the basin during the 1971 and 1972 water years. Some measurements could not be made because some sites were not accessible at all times, some of the streams did not have flow at all times, or some of the streams could not be measured during high flow. This model proposes that the NTS is undergoing extension in a N. 50 ? W.-S. 50 ? E. direction coincident with the minimum principal stress direction. The model is supported by (1) a tectonic similarity between a belt of NTS Quaternary faulting and part of the Nevada-California seismic belt, for which northwest-southeast extension has been suggested; (2) historic northeast- trending natural- and explosion-produced fractures in the NTS; (3) the virtual absence in the NTS of northwest-trending Quaternary faults; (4) the character of north-trending faults and basin configuration in the Yucca Flat area, which suggest a component of right-lateral displacement and post-10 m.y. (million year) oblique separation of the sides of the north-trending depression; (5) seismic evidence suggesting a north- to northwest-trending tension axis; (6) strain measurements, which indicate episodes of northwest-southeast extension within a net northeast-southwest compression; (7) a stress estimate based on tectonic cracking that indicates near-surface northwest-southeast-directed tension, and two stress measurements indicating an excess (tectonic) maximum principal compressive stress in a northeast-southwest direction at depths of about 1,000 feet (305 m); and (8) enlargement of some drill holes in Yucca Flat in a northwest-southeast direction. \r\n\r\nIt is inferred that the stress episode resulting in the formation of deep alluvium-filled trenches began somewhere between 10 and possibly less than 4 m.y. ago in the NTS and is currently active.
